Indianapolis Colts team report: Injuries continue to plague Colts

INDIANAPOLIS- At a time when the team must put its best football forward with Pittsburgh in town Sunday night, injuries likely will impact the starting lineup.

Along with QB Peyton Manning, who’ll miss his third game after undergoing Sept. 8 neck surgery, the team probably will be without LB Gary Brackett (shoulder), G Ryan Diem (ankle) and S Melvin Bullitt (shoulder).

Pat Angerer will replace Brackett and Mike Pollak step in for Diem. It won’t be as easy to fill Bullitt’s void if he’s unable to play. The backups include rookie Joe Lefeged and David Caldwell, who spent his 2010 rookie season on the injured reserve list. Former Pro Bowl S Antoine Bethea is solid on the last line of defense. Bullitt’s replacement will lack anything resembling experience.

Notes: The running game has shown signs of life behind a healthy RB Joseph Addai. The lopsided nature of the opening loss at Houston limited opportunities, but the ground game generated 109 yards on 26 carries against the Browns. Addai is healthy and has been the catalyst. He’s averaging 4.7 yards per attempt, utilizing his sharp-cutting ability and quick acceleration through the hole. It’s evident the running game is going to have to carry more of the load until QB Kerry Collins can be more productive in the passing game.

Colts expect Kerry Collins to play

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Colts don't expect a sore throwing shoulder to keep Kerry Collins out Sunday night against Pittsburgh.

The injury limited Collins at Wednesday's practice, but coach Jim Caldwell says Collins should do more work on Thursday.

It's unclear when the 38-year-old Collins was injured during last week's loss to Cleveland.

The only other quarterbacks on Indy's active roster are Peyton Manning, who is expected to miss at least two months after having neck surgery, and Curtis Painter, who took some snaps with the starters Wednesday. Undrafted rookie Mike Hartline is on the practice squad.

Caldwell says Manning could be in the coaches' booth Sunday if doctors clear him.
