Sweet!! I had no idea he had that kind of cut back ability. He look awesome on that 50 yard TD run. For a guy his size to be able to do that is incredible. Keep that guy. :Cheers

Dwyer's problem has never been talent, it focus. If he gets that he has a lot of upside

Dwyer just made the 53-man roster with that run, he made that first Carolina defender whiff badly with that cutback.

My opinion, too little, too late.

against second team scrubs (even Carolina 1st teamers are NFL second teamers).

I would use Dwyer as trade bait. Keep Moore this season, then get Batch back next season.

MOORE can't pick up blitzes!! He's a 3rd down guy and if the DEFENSE blitzes 5, the RB has to stay in and MOORE canNOT block. He's been replaced many times b/c he just can't pass block. Time for him to move on.

What makes you guys think BOTH Dwyer and Moore won't make the final 53? Last year they did. I expect the same this year.

The last 2 weeks were the first time I believed Dwyer could be a legit NFL RB.

That's not what the coaches say. Moore is considered to be a very good blocking back and that's one of the reasons he is the 3rd down back.

I'd like to see a quote on that.
I've seen MOORE pulled out of games when teams are bringing the heat on 3rd down. MOORE is a below-average pass blocker.

Yeah, we always keep 4. You can't go into a season with just 3 RB's on your roster. Mendenhall, Redman, Moore, and Dwyer will all make the final 53. Only 3 of them will be active on gamedays, but none of them will be cut or traded.

That run was a thing of beauty. Nice downflield block, too. Was impressive that he didn't get run down from behind. Seems to me he could run a little lower and be a bit tougher to tackle at the LOS.

Dwyer is Digest Player of Week

By Bob Labriola - Steelers Digest

The preseason finale has been an important game for Jonathan Dwyer in each of his first two NFL seasons. Last year as a rookie, his performance against the Panthers was enough for him to earn a roster spot, and on Thursday night in Carolina he turned in an even better one.

Dwyer rushed for 88 yards on 13 carries, including an impressive 50-yard touchdown, to go along with two special teams tackles. The one negative on the night for Dwyer was that he lost a fumble, but he still is the Steelers Digest Player of the Week.

Also considered were Charlie Batch, who looked very crisp in finishing 6-of-8 for 59 yards in limited action; Emmanuel Sanders, who had four catches for 60 yards in his preseason debut; Jeremy Kapinos, who punted twice with each kick traveling 63 yards; and Shaun Suisham, who was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, including one for 52 yards, and had three of his four kickoffs go for touchbacks.

Problem is after nice plays, he curls up in a ball right behind the center and takes a nap. He's got 1 good play a game and that's about it. Can't make an NFL career of that.

IDK- if he's not expected to start, but simply give you one great play it might be worth it. He'd be like the George Costanza of the NFL- one great play and then off to the showers and out!

It would be worth it if he went up to Ray Lewis during week 1 and told him "The Jerk Store called, and they're running out of YOU!"

Dwyer showing improvement for Steelers

By Ralph N. Paulk, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW

Steelers running back Jonathan Dwyer cuts back on the Panthers' Sean Considine for a second quarter touchdown at Bank of America Stadium Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Arguably one play this preseason has demonstrated the progress Jonathan Dwyer has made since the Steelers drafted him last year. It likely helped seal his roster sport for another season.

With the game tied at 7 in the second quarter Thursday against Carolina, Dwyer hurdled a Panthers defender at the line of scrimmage, then smartly followed the blocks of receiver Wes Lyons and tight end John Gilmore and broke a tackle downfield before receiver Antonio Brown escorted him into the end zone.

The 50-yard touchdown was a patient run for Dwyer and counted for more than the six points it registered on the scoreboard.

"I'm been trying to prove myself since coming here," said Dwyer, drafted in the sixth round out of Georgia Tech. "I'm trying to just make plays, so I can't worry about what the organization wants. You can't worry because you just put pressure on yourself. I just wanted to go out there and execute and have fun."

The 5-foot-11, 220-pound running back has been fighting the critics since his rookie season.

Much of the criticism this season was self-inflicted.

He gained nearly 20 pounds during the NFL lockout instead of building muscle. He fell behind at the start of training camp, in part, because he arrived beefed up rather than bulked up.

But Dwyer has trimmed down considerably and appears to be in the best shape of his career as the Steelers prepare to face AFC North rival Baltimore in the season-opener next Sunday.

With Rashard Mendenhall sitting out the final exhibition game against the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium, Dwyer gained a game-high 88 yards on 13 punishing carries. He did it mostly against Carolina's first-string defense.

"If we're doing what we're supposed to be doing we can be one of the most-dominating running games in the league," said Dwyer, who split time with Isaac Redman and rookie free-agent John Clay, who was cut Friday. "All we have to do is prove it week in and week out. We've got to do it every time we step on the field."

Dwyer seemingly has solidified a roster spot behind Mendenhall, Isaac Redman and Mewelde Moore.

"We've learned from each other," Dwyer said of Mendenhall and Redman. "We all talk to each other throughout the week in practice. In games, sometimes they ask me if I see anything else on blitz pickups and passing routes. I've learned a lot from those guys. They've been here, and I'm like a little brother just learning."

There may still be some doubts about Dwyer's ability to perform consistently during the 16-game regular season. But no one could question his enthusiasm on a night when head coach Mike Tomlin evaluated players days before NFL teams are to trim rosters to 53 players.

"It was a good ending to a nice preseason for us," said Tomlin, whose team finished with a 3-1 record. "We had an opportunity to evaluate some men, and I think they represented themselves well."

I think he has the physical potential to be excellent, but I am not sure he has the head. He is woefully out of shape, even after his weight loss. He needs to get in the weight room 2X daily and stretch 2X daily. Then he can run a few miles.
