Contract issues could delay veteran Steelers' practice
Wednesday, August 03, 2011
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Ryan Clark, the Steelers players' representative, said he does not think players will ratify a new collective bargaining agreement with the NFL in time for veterans around the league to join their teams at training camp practices Thursday.

The new NFL calendar year is scheduled to begin Thursday, and all players with new contracts who have not been permitted to practice were to do so then.

Among the Steelers affected are Ike Taylor, Willie Colon, Jonathan Scott, Chris Hoke, William Gay, Dennis Dixon and more.

While the NFL Players Association recommended approval of the new CBA, it hinges on the two sides negotiating a number of so-called minor issues before an official vote of the players takes place. One of those issues turned out to be not so minor. Clark said it has to do with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's power over disciplining players. Clark said the players want either an impartial committee involved, or to have specific language outlining penalties for personal conduct violations.

Linebacker Lamar Woodley said Steelers players were told the veterans who are not practicing may not be able to do so until Tuesday. Clark said while he does not think it will affect preseason games, he's not sure he wants to play a game with untested young players.
