The funny thing is I read it on a Raven's board. The guy that posted it phrased it liked it was a bad thing. I replied with a 'wahoo' smiley and said I was glad to see him gone. Probably not the reply they expected.

His 9 catches last season will be hard to replace I'm sure.

Outside of Heath, I'm not impressed by any of our TE's. I liked Spaeth, though he never got any better than i thought he would.

Woohoo! As the article says he has graded negatively on running AND passing plays for 3 straight years. And he likes to pee on Pittsburgh. We may miss him early in the season when looking for someone who knows the offense. After we get someone up to speed, he will be forgotten forever.

Well, I don't know if this is exactly cause for celebration. He's a rookie, and an undrafted one at that, who hasn't had the benefit of any OTA's or minicamps, didn't even know where he would be playing until 2 days ago, and hasn't played at all last year due to an NCAA suspension. He's been away from the football field almost as long as Plax at this point (minus the slug in the thigh, of course). Knowing how often that Arians likes to use a 2 TE formation, I wouldn't be surprised if we were scouting out veteran FA TE bargains out there.

Wonder if Todd Heap would take a few less dollars to face off against his old mates twice a year (or three times, counting the seemingly inevitable yearly playoff matchup between us lately)? Granted, he's an injury risk, but if he goes down, we can then insert Saunders at the #2 (which would be right back to where we are now anyway).

They just said on the Raven's board the Martz's offense doesn't use pass-catching TEs. That Spaeth was brought there to block. Isn't his blocking average to weak?? Or am I mis-remembering something? Maybe it's his inability to read blitz schemes, but I never felt great when I knew he was blocking for Ben.

Am I crazy or is Martz, lol????

How about we let Saunders play? The pats played two rookie TEs last year and ate our lunch.

This team needs to get younger and let young guys get on the field.

I think Wesley Saunders could end up being a better blocking and pass catching TE than Spaeth. Also i think till Saunders gets used to playbook and playing conditions in NFL, Steelers will be seeing more 3 or 4-WR set which i believe is more effective.

If I remember correctly both grandkowski and hernandez were 1st round picks.. or one was a second... I think hernandez may have went in the second. Far cry from an UDFA who didn't know where he was gonna play 3 months before the season started let alone 2 days before.

FWIW, I saw where he was projected to be a 2nd round pick but then had the off field issues.

Either way, a shrub would be a better signing than Spaeth.

I can't freaking believe we lost Spaeth!!! Holy $hit!

There ya go...Just cause you "were" a Steeler I will give you last luv.

Good Luck to him. We needed to move on.

Only thing that interest me now is that they severely over paid for him and he makes the opening day roster so we get a good comp pick. :P

I agree that Saunders could be an improvement over Spaeth in both blocking and receiving...in time. I also hope that Arians does move away from all the multi-TE sets into more multi-WR sets. Word has it that he planned to run a whole bunch of the spread formation in the Super Bowl, but then Manny Sanders got hurt, and that put the kibosh on that.

Sign the shrub. He may be a little "wet", but he has far more potential.

gronkowski went high in the 2nd round

hernandez was like a 4th round pick IIRC

Well, I guess I'm a Bears fan now.

What do I do with my Spaeth Steeler jersey now?

They were so popular that I could never find them in stock anywhere. Obviously, they sell out soon as they come in. I had to do a custom jersey to get one.

NOW WHAT? :(

Wait till he plays us again as a Bear.

With only Troy P between Matt Spaeth and the end zone....just the thought makes me stutter.

James Harrison's gotta be concerned about Spaeth's blocking. How could Jimmy possibly handle this giant of a man?

It's too late Flippy. You cant do a 180 and jump on the Spaeth bandwagon now. While your visions of what will happen when Spaeth pancakes JH like a Waffle House fry cook are accurate "Spaeth the Spectacular" was never been appreciated before and now HE IS GONE.

This is not a bandwagon...it is a train, and there is no room for YOU on the Matt Spaeth train (well technically that is not correct....there are 200 seats and 199 are still.... actually its kinda lonely in here..."is there anybody here..here here here..echo")

No more wasted roster spaeth!

Matt Spaeth, the backup tight end to Heath Miller the past four seasons, signed with the Chicago Bears Thursday, meaning third-year player David Johnson could have a different role this season.

Johnson, known for his blocking, might get an opportunity to show more in the passing game with Spaeth gone. Miller and Johnson are the only tight ends on the roster with NFL experience.

"I always look forward to getting better and playing more," Johnson said. "Who doesn't want to play more and have a big role on the team? It means a lot to me, and I'm ready to take on that new role."

53 and 66 are HUMONGOUS!

But seriously, Spaeth may get more pass catching opportunity since the Bears have cut Greg Olsen who seemed to do pretty well for them. Fantasy sleeper....

flippy
07-29-2011, 05:52 PM
He's definitely a sleeper. He had 6 catches in a game 2x in back to back games. Project that out over 16 games and you have a 96 catch TE.

Add in his height and he's a better option than Randy Moss in the red zone. Expect 25 TDs easy if he's used correctly.

Matt Spaeth should have no problem catching 96 passes for 25 TDs from Jay Cutler this season. :D
