Packers and Hawk will continue to talk over next day

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 2, 2011

It’s not a surprise that Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk got released Wednesday considering the huge bonus on his contract. It also wouldn’t be a surprise if Hawk returned to the team.

Heck, it’s even possible Hawk could return to the team by the end of Thursday.

Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports Hawk and the Packers will continue to talk through tomorrow night in hopes of getting a deal done. While that will be tough to accomplish, it’s a good sign that both sides would like to come up with a contract that makes sense.

Mike McCarthy indicated at the Combine that Desmond Bishop was locked into a starting job at inside linebacker, which would indicate that Hawk and Nick Barnett would likely get the other gig. If the Packers can get Hawk back at a reasonable rate, Barnett could get the boot.

The Packers officially confirmed Hawk’s release and also announced the release of tight end Donald Lee and safety Derrick Martin. G.M. Ted Thompson wished Lee and Martin well, but hoped Hawk would be back.

“With A.J., the business side of the game is driving this decision,” Thompson said. “We’re hopeful that we can continue to work with A.J. to have him be a part of our team in the future.”

I would think it was funny if he actually signed with another team.

Report: A.J. Hawk flying back to Green Bay

A.J. Hawk wasn’t an ex-Packer for long. Cut Wednesday by the team, it looks like Hawk is already back in the fold.

Lance Allen of NBC 4 in Milwaukee reports that Hawk is scheduled to fly back to Green Bay on Thursday to sign a new five-year deal. We haven’t heard confirmation of the report elsewhere yet, but the news isn’t a huge surprise.

We passed along an item Wednesday evening saying that the Packers and Hawk would continue talking in hopes of reaching a deal before the clock struck midnight on the current collective bargaining agreement.

With Hawk back in the fold, the question now becomes whether Nick Barnett will return to the Packers. (We’re guessing . . . no.) Barnett is due over $6 million in 2011, and coach Mike McCarthy already indicated Desmond Bishop would be a starter next year. Hawk, Bishop, and Barnett all play inside linebacker.

Bishop and Hawk would both by signed through 2014 if Allen’s report is correct.

NFL contracts are funny. The Packers negotiate a contract with him that includes a 10 million dollar bonus. He is due that bonus, so they just cut him so they don't have to pay it, then he flies back to Green Bay to re-sign with the team that just hosed him.

I don't agree at all with baseball in their guaranteed contract approach, but the above scenario is just as odd. If you were Hawk, why wouldn't you market your services as a free agent?

He's already re-signed with the packers.

No kidding. He could have at least pretended that he wanted to explore his options. Heck, knowing his family I wouldn't have been surprised if he didn't at least explore going to the Bengals or maybe even Browns. It would keep him closer to "home."

I still think it would have been funny if Al Davis, Dan Snyder or somebody would have scooped him up and paid too much for a veteran LB from a SB winning team. Oh well, I guess they don't do these things for my personal entertainment.
