Steelers interview Carnell Lake for secondary coach job
Wednesday, March 02, 2011
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers might be reaching back into their past to hire a secondary coach to replace Ray Horton.

Former safety Carnell Lake, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who played 10 seasons with the Steelers, is at the team's South Side facility today to interview for that position with Coach Mike Tomlin.

Lake is one of the team's all-time best safeties, recording 16 interceptions, 17 fumble recoveries and 25 sacks from 1989 to 1998. He also had five defensive touchdowns.

Lake was a secondary coach at his alma mater, UCLA, in 2009, but resigned after one season because of family reasons.

Horton left after the Super Bowl to become defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.

I was just talking to someone recently about how here we are with deep issues at secondary and Rod Woodson gets a DB coach gig with the ...Raiders???????
Lake might be great. He has real coaching experience and received accolades for his work with UCLA.

Rahim Moore had 10 interceptions in 2009 with Carnell Lake as his secondary coach at UCLA. Moore had 1 interception in 2010 after Lake left the program.

If we hire Lake, could it be a clue that we are going to draft Moore?

Not sure a 4.57 40 at the Combine helps Moore's chances.

No offense, but the 40 is so over-rated. That is straight line speed, not football speed.

As for Lake; I loved him and would love to see him here as a coach.

You do have to take more into account than 40. They have shown how the simple training of running the 40 from a track standpoint can have a tenth impact. It's a gauge but looking at the shuttle and cone times are also helpful. One of the biggest is the position drills to see how fluid they are. See them in their backpedal, how the can flip there hips and turn to run, locate the ball in flight, and of course track it down and catch it. Also, response drills where they make direction changes based on the coach running the drill and how they close. All useful...But you have to show up on tape. That's #1. Moore shows up on tape. Not the best S to come out in past years but clearly one of the top 2.

That all being said, to comment of his combine workout. Would have like to see him be no higher than the 4.5 range. Not bad but didn't help. 11 on the bench is a concern in the immediate term. Broad & vertical shows some explosion in his legs. Shuttle & cone "respectable" for a S. Nice size hands to catch ball. Probably don't want him in the box with those short arms and weak upper body because he might struggle getting off blocks by WRs, RBs, or TEs so FS is his better position. If he ran low 4.5's and put up around 20 on the bench and had his cones better than 6.7, I would say he might have had a shot in the end of 1st. I think he positioned himself to come off no later than the top 15 picks of the 2nd.

I always liked Lake. I'll support this hiring purely for nostalgic reasons, and I hope that he'll be a good coach.

I was unaware of his coaching track record, but that's a good start. I would think his versatility as a player should also help him as a coach.

I like Lake. He was talented. I really would have liked to have gotten Deshea Townsend. He was average but played above average because he was smart. I just hope the secondary improves......

So the fact that Moore had 1 INT after Lake left had something to do with it?

Not hardly. But I am sure he will tell the Steers if hired that Moore is one terrific cover safety/ball hawk.

How important is a straight line 40 for a free safety? Not that that important at all. But hey...if you want to think that discounts him as a player have at it.

There sure are quite a few guys from that 1995 Super Bowl defense that have gone on to coaching. Off the top of my head:
Kevin Greene
Rod Woodson
Darren Perry
Carnell Lake
Jerry Olsavsky

Maybe Dick LeBeau, John Mitchell, Marvin Lewis and the rest of our coaches were just that influential?

For Lloyd II, comparison to dad ends at name

Greg Lloyd II, the son of ex-Steelers LB Greg Lloyd Sr., is a prospect from Connecticut. (Ben Liebenberg/NFL)

INDIANAPOLIS — Most of the 330 hopefuls at the NFL Scouting Combine have some type of story to tell. But only one of them has a father who was a five-time Pro Bowl player.

The Greg Lloyd II on the combine roster is the son of former Steelers great Greg Lloyd Sr., one of the nastiest players of his era. But even though they share a name and perhaps a similar mean streak on the field, there’s little else between them. Outside of a recent visit by Greg Lloyd Sr. at the East-West Shrine Game, the two hadn’t seen each other in more than two years and have no relationship, according to Lloyd II.

That’s a fact that’s OK with the younger Lloyd, a Connecticut linebacker who couldn’t have been more open or gracious in talking about a man he has no relationship with, a man who was accused of sticking a gun down his son’s mouth when he was 12 years old. It’s OK with Lloyd II because he’s OK with it himself, even as he’s asked by NFL teams to explain his past as they dig deep to examine the father-son relationship and the impact it has had on his life.

“I have to explain the fact that some people, for some reason, don’t know the situation, so I have to tell the story again about the history of physical abuse, why my parents divorced, and that’s why me and him don’t talk,” Lloyd II said.

“For me, it’s an easy thing to do, not having communication with him,” he added. “Granted, he played the same sport that I’m trying to play right now. But what I tell (teams) is that even though he could be someone that I could talk to about football, there’s 1,000 other people who played the game, too, who I could talk to.”

Lloyd II says the relationship isn’t a red flag for teams.

“It’s something that happened in the past, so I have to accept it,” he said. “It’s something that happened to me. So I’ve accepted it, I’ve moved on and I’ve grown from it.”

Lloyd II receives that question about his name often — “Are you the son of that Greg Lloyd?” — and while he’s used to it, he showed an impressive level of maturity in speaking openly on the topic. When his father came to see him play in the East-West Shrine Game, he said it was the first game the elder Lloyd had seen him play live.

As he explained, “It is what it is.”

It certainly is. And it’s a credit to Lloyd II that he has become his own person, something that should be easy for NFL teams to see.

Carnell Lake was the QB of our secondary. He was a cerebral player who also possessed great physical skill. Also, Lake played CB for several games when we were short-handed at that position. He really held his own out there and showed a deep understanding of pass coverage technique. He was a student of the game as a player and very well-spoken. This would be a great hire.

But Moore had some of the very best positional drill evaluations at the Combine. Sanders and Mayock were very effusive in their praise.

If he runs in the low to mid 4.5 range at his Pro day he is clearly a late Round 1 candidate.

Not just a few games. Lake moved to CB in the '95 season after Woodson blew out his knee week 1. He made the PB that year as a CB. He then moved to CB a couple of other times during his Steelers career when needed - can't recall when. Not bad for a college LB.

Carnel Lake is one of my all time Steeler favorites. He was a selfless player who willingly gave up guaranteed Pro Bowl invitations at safety when he moved to corner in several years. That he made the Pro Bowl at corner just cements his status as a great player. Note: I was disappointed that he bashed the Steelers when he left them.

However, being a great player doesn't mean squat towards his ability as a coach. Does he have more experience coaching than just the one year at UCLA? If they think he is a great coach then hire him ... if not then pass. We need someone that can teach our DBs how to play because they seem to be lacking in certain fundamentals.

You must have missed his first run when he ran a 4.53? And I take it you missed his position drills? He was one of the best of all the DB.s Turn and go, plant, hips, rotation, back peddle, and balls skills were as good as it gets.
