I mean ...

We are awfully thin at OL.

If we lost one or two lineman, and if Pouncey could be a warm body who could slow down the rush at Ben even just for a moment longer ... could he go in?

Or once declared "out", are there some NFL rules or something that won't let us dress him?

If the latter is the case, who do we activate? Would we play some practice squad kind of guy? Ruth talked about Hills and Chris Scott ... would we possibly go into the Superbowl with no one on the bench?

Is there a Wal-Mart near Jerry World? :-)

I do believe out means out.
unfair advantage if you could have a team prepare for one guy and then all of a sudden....

Steelers place Pouncey on IR, sign guard off practice squad

By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, February 5, 2011

The Steelers have placed center Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve and signed guard Dorian Brooks to their 53-man roster.

Pouncey started every game this season but the Steelers ruled him out for the Super Bowl because of a high ankle sprain.

The 6-2, 306-pound Brooks has been on the Steelers’ practice squad all season. He signed with the team last April as an undrafted free agent out of James Madison.

Holy cow, Batman. I was half joking when I wondered in the 1st post whether we'd sign a practice squad guy, now here we are doing it. Hey, I was DEFINITELY joking when I asked if we might sign a Walmart stocker ... really, I was!

Well, wouldn't it be a play for the ages if Mr. Brooks happened to be the one that pancake blocks Raji into the end zone so Ben dives in for the winning score with 0:00 left on the clock.

This is a great friggin' game!!

Why not Smith also? He can't help on the bench.

Smith will just be one of the gameday inactives (which I assumed Pouncey would be as well). The only reason to I.R. Pouncey and sign Brooks to the 53 man roster is if you plan to dress Brooks as our 7th o-lineman instead of Tony Hills or Chris Scott. Perhaps Brooks is a better option as a back-up center to Legursky than Essex would be. I don't see anything about Brooks ever playing center at James Madison (started as a d-lineman, then played 3 seasons at guard), but it looks like he may be the only pure interior lineman as a backup, since Essex, Hills, and Scott all came to us as tackles in college. I guess we could go with Essex as the backup T/G, and Brooks as the backup G/C with Hills and Chris Scott in street clothes again.

Do inactives ever dress, or just wear gray sweatsuits and stand on the sidelines with their hands tucked in their pants? In a worst case scenario, I wonder if Smith could play, from a rule-book point of view, if he's inactive.

If not -- why not IR him, and get someone else from the practice squad ...or Wal-Mart - it worked for the Rams and Kurt Warner way back when! http://www.walmart.com/storeLocator/ca_ ... We have 53 men on our roster, but only 45 are deemed active. The only guy who is deemed inactive that actually suits up and could potentially play is the 3rd emergency QB (Charlie Batch), and if he enters the game before the 4th quarter, then Ben or Byron cannot re-enter the game again. Aaron Smith will be inactive. Putting him on I.R. and promoting someone from the practice squad (say, Al Woods, for instance), only to have Woods be inactive is a pointless exercise. I think they I.R.ed Pouncey to promote Brooks in order to actually make Brooks active for the game as a backup G/C (instead of Tony Hills or Chris Scott). I imagine the inactive 8 for the Super Bowl will be Jonathan Dwyer, Crezdon Butler, Steve McLendon, Tony Hills, Chris Scott, Aaron Smith, Charlie Batch as the designated 3rd QB in uniform, and then probably Will Allen, I suppose). Even though most of those guys are perfectly healthy, they cannot play in the game (except for Batch, that I previously mentioned).

it would definitely be pointless since Al Woods was claimed off our practice squad and now is a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Forgot that! Well, we replaced him with Sonny Harris, so we can use him in the example instead.

I know Al Woods got some playing time with the Bucs, does anyone know how he actually played?

I think Ruth hit it on the head. The only reason this move was made was to make Brooks active for the SB. There isn't any other reason to explain it. Brooks can play G/C and they were very high on him through camp & preseason. If you remember, he tok snaps in camp at C. What it really tells me is that if they only dress 7 and Essex & Brooks get a hat...Then that deosn't say much for Chris Scott. Coming out of TN, Scott was able to play all 5 OL positions. He started at RG, was also a backup C, and finished his last 18 sarts at LT. To have a PS guy leap frog you for the last game of the year...And the biggest game...Says something. Again, Hills lack of "flexibilty" earns him street clothes. The OL is just decimated but I don't see a reason to dress 8 and sit a ST guy. Unless there is an injury we don't know about, I would say inactives will be:

Batch(3rd QB), Dwyer, C Scott, Hills, Smith, McClendon, Butler, and Allen.
