Playbook did an exelent break down of why the middle of the field is always open vs. the Steelers. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-p ... e-problems (http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-playbook/09000d5d81e12402/Playbook-Steelers-defensive-problems). I sure hope the guys have been doing their film study and fix this.

The middle is open because our DBs can't cover man to man and we give them huge buffers that let them get open quickly on slants and down and in patterns

The key play to that scheme is for Ike Taylor to hold the WR up after he catches the ball and then for Ryan Clark to ice the WR.

I think we've actually moved away from that (too) long-held staple of DL's defense. We've seen a lot more press coverage from our corners and even a little Zero from time to time.

If the middle is open, I'd say it has more to do with Troy being up in the box, or our linebackers cheating up against the run (maybe caught on some play-action or something).

Other than Ike, I agree that our corners shouldn't be locked down on most NFL receivers...at least not for very long. They are a physical group and I think we need to press the GB receivers and knock 'em off their routes at the line of scrimmage. I see no issue with covering man underneath and playing a single-high safety. Get to Rodgers quickly and don't let his receivers be where he expects them to be out of the gate.

"Middle open..." . I've kind of known that ever since Fitz burned us in XLIII. Now that was a downer.

The middle is always open. Hasn't changed in 15 years.

Just like our red zone pass defense, we back up, and back up, and black up, so the WRs run to the goal line and just turn around. Boldin did the same thing when he dropped that pass.

We give up the goal line and defend the 5 yards BEHIND us.

We also are suckers for half play-action rollouts to the right in the red zone.

Nothing has changed in 15 years.

But, it gave the offense it's rightful opportunity to put together a drive. "Who's laughing now O-line?" :tt2 :tt2

man underneath with a single high safety? You'll need to play a tampa two with two safeties back or you'll leave the sidelines exposed for double moves or our corners getting waxed at the LOS. covering them the way you want will lead to a few more pressures, but they'll have big plays all over the place. This ain't joe flacco

I don't know how we win a game.

Yes, this will cost us a couple 15 yard completions per game. But we know you can't:

Run the ball at us at all.
Throw down the sidelines, unless our CB falls down.
Throw in the flat.

Really all they can do is throw in the middle and after a few WRs get crushed, alligator arms will follow. See Jets game. And after a few balls get tipped to Troy for INTs, they will remember why teams won't live in the middle on us. Yes, they will get some sneaky plays, but they will have to live on short outs and ins. And the more they put the ball in the air, the more chances for a pick or Rodgers being carted off the field.

No team has 22 all pros, we are no exception. We give you what we want to give you until we want to take it away and leave a dent in your head.

Good post! there are reasons that we are 12-4 and have been to the SB twice in 3 years!

Its going to be awful tough to hit the middle when you got Woodley and Harrison bearing down on you. Just saying.

Well, you can't exactly run a Tampa 2 with a single-high safety :D

If you meant that we need to run a Tampa 2 instead of going with a single deep safety, that can get you in trouble as well. The T2 only covers up the middle by dropping a linebacker deep. You still have the soft spots down the seam and between the corner and safety. If you don't pressure Rodgers, he'll drop it right in the bucket.

Jennings is the only one that scares me on the long ball and I'd be banking that when we do this, the pressure won't allow Rodgers time to get the ball downfield. Of course you have to mix things up defensively as well. Just like you don't want to go cover 2 all game long, you don't want to leave your corners on an island too much either.

We need to attack the quarterback...period. :tt2
