Steelers consider expanding Heinz Field

The Pittsburgh Steelers alerted the Stadium Authority on Monday of a feasibility study currently underway regarding the possible expansion of the capacity of Heinz Field by 2,500-4,000 seats.

The Steelers presented this at Monday’s meeting in conjunction with an evaluation of the future parking needs on the North Shore in light of all of the development already taking place there, as well as the down-the-road plan for the continued development of the area. In addition to Heinz Field and PNC Park, Stage AE recently opened as did a Hyatt Place Hotel, to go along with the previously opened office towers.

Because any expansion of the seating capacity of Heinz Field would bring more fans to football games and other events at the venue, the Steelers wanted to alert the Stadium Authority so that the parking needs of those additional people would be taken into consideration.

The additional seating would be located in the South Plaza of Heinz Field, and the team will be able to get a preview of how that might work because temporary stands have been built there for the NHL’s Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.

That additional seating will be left in place and used for any and all playoff games the Steelers could host this season. By defeating the Cleveland Browns this Sunday, the Steelers would win the AFC North Division and clinch a home game in the AFC Divisional Playoffs, to be held the weekend of Jan. 15-16.

The current seating capacity of Heinz Field is listed at 65,050, and the Steelers said it would be another year before a definite decision to expand is made. If the decision is made to go ahead with the expansion, construction could be expected to begin some time in 2012.

Dumb question but I would assume this would close up the open end. I hope so because it could make the stadium one of the louder venues in sports.

Steelers consider adding 4,000 seats to Heinz Field

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considering adding up to 4,000 seats at Heinz Field.

The Steelers said today construction could begin in 2012 if the team moves forward with the expansion project at the North Shore stadium, which seats 65,050.

Mary Conturo, executive director of the Stadium Authority and the Sports & Exhibition Authority, said the seats would be constructed in the south end of the stadium, under the scoreboard, and would not change the overall footprint of the stadium.

“They’re just beginning to look at whether this is feasible or not,” Conturo said. “Financially, more seats generate more revenue for the city and the authority. If it’s feasible, it’s certainly worth considering.”

Conturo said Steelers president and co-owner Art Rooney II briefed Stadium Authority board members individually about the expansion plans before the authority’s public meeting. Rooney could not be reached for comment.

The Steelers said a decision on whether to expand Heinz Field seating by between 2,500 and 4,000 seats wouldn’t be made for another year.

The team said a preview of what the expansion might look like will come Saturday, as temporary stands were built for Saturday’s NHL Winter Classic hockey game. More than 67,000 fans are expected for the match between the Penguins and Washington Capitals.

The temporary stands in the stadium's south plaza will remain in place for any playoff games that the Steelers host.

If the Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns Sunday they are guaranteed at least one playoff game.

The Steelers said they wanted to alert the authority to the expansion plans because of the effect the additional fans at football games and other events would have on parking.

The authority, which oversees development of the land between Heinz Field and PNC Park, agreed to spend $20,000 to study parking on the North Shore.

They should consider field turf if they consider anything.

are the Rooneys simply hellbent on having grass because of the lower injury factor and the players' preference for a grass field? otherwise field turf just makes too much sense...

From what I understand Dan wants grass, Art II would prefer FT.
