Also consistently getting starting field position @ the 35-37 yardline.

This was the first REALLY bad game IMO, but it stunk majorly. Field position between the 2 teams had to be huge.

what about Sanchez walking into the end zone?

I thought that was a GREAT playcall by the Jets. It's one thing when you give up a play based on lack of execution (return) another thing when you get outsmarted (Sanchez run).

Jets defeat Steelers, 22-17

Sunday, December 19, 2010
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A lack of discipline both on their kickoff team and in the personal foul department cost the Steelers today as the New York Jets came from behind in the second half to upset them, 22-17, at Heinz Field.

A late safety prevented the Steelers from going for a field goal to tie it on their final drive, which reached the New York 10 with nine seconds left. The game ended there on two incomplete passes into the end zone by Ben Roethlisberger.

The Jets, who had not scored a touchdown in their previous two games, struck on the opening kick of the first half when Brad Smith returned it 97 yards for a touchdown. The Steelers eventually went ahead in the third quarter but two personal fouls cost them dearly, as did several play fakes and trick plays on offense by the Jets.

There were no turnovers in the game and the Troy Polamalu-less Steelers managed just one sack on defense.

The Steelers, losing for the third time at home this season, fell to 10-4 and tumbled back into a first-place tie in the AFC North Division with Baltimore. However, should the Steelers win their final two games -- Thursday at home against Carolina and Jan. 2 at Cleveland -- they will win the division and earn the AFC's No. 2 playoff seed and the bye that goes with it in the first round.

The Jets kept on pace for a wildcard playoff berth with a 10-4 record.

The Jets took the final lead on Nick Folk's 34-yard field goal with 10:07 left. The Steelers seemingly had the Jets stopped when, on third down at the New York 46, Polamalu replacement Ryan Mundy missed a clear shot on a sack of quarterback Mark Sanchez, who then completed a 16-yard pass to Braylon Edwards to keep the scoring drive going.

New York added a two-point safety with 2:38 left when Jason Taylor tackled Mewelde Moore for a 3-yard loss in the end zone on the first play of the Steelers' series.

The Steelers snapped a 10-10 halftime lead on the first series of the third quarter when Rashard Mendenhall ran for a 1-yard touchdown, his 10th rushing this season.

But the Jets came back on their first series to tie it, 17-17. With fourth-and-one at the seven, quarterback Mark Sanchez faked a handoff in the power formation and ran around left end with no defender near him for the score. The drive was highlighted by Braylon Edwards' 15-yard catch and then a hit by safety Ryan Clark to Edwards' head, yielding another 15 yards on the roughing call. It gave the Jets a first down at the 16.

Another 15-yard personal foul stymied a good-looking drive for the Steelers late in the third quarter. Ben Roethlisberger completed a 17-yard pass to Mike Wallace for a first down at the 46. However, tackle Flozell Adams was flagged for hitting Darrelle Revis in the head after the play. The Steelers went back to their 32 and the drive died.

Matt Spaeth, starting at tight end for Heath Miller, scored his first touchdown of the season, a 9-yard pass from Roethlisberger in the first period to tie the game 7-7.

The Steelers special teams returned to those bad, old days of '09 when they allowed four kickoff returns for touchdowns. Sunday, they allowed one when Brad Smith returned the opening kickoff virtually untouched down the right sideline 97 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 Jets lead.

After flirting with a score on their second series that died at the Jets' 34, the Steelers tied it midway through the second quarter. Roethlisberger hit Spaeth with a 9-yard touchdown pass on third down. It was the fourth third-down conversion of that 96-yard, 16-play drive. It also was the fifth time Roethlisberger sent a pass Spaeth's way and the first time it was completed.

The Jets, though, took a 10-7 lead on the next series that began at their 37 after a poor kickoff. The big play of the series came when Mark Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards with a 38-yard pass over Bryant McFadden to the 11.

Nick Folk kicked a 25-yard field goal to put the Jets on top 10-7.

The Steelers then tied it with 33 seconds left on the half on Shaun Suisham's 42-yard field goal to cap a 10-play 53-yard drive.

Pittsburgh Steelers Lose To New York Jets: Special Teams Make Difference

By Charles Howe (Steelers Featured Columnist) on December 19, 2010

The New York Jets ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field. This proved to be one of the key plays in the Jets' 22-17 victory over the Steelers.

However, this play wasn't the only crucial play on special teams in the game. The Jets kept pinning Pittsburgh deep in its own territory, including on a punt downed at the Pittsburgh 3-yard line with just under three minutes to play. On the first play the following the punt the Steelers surrendered a safety.

The Steelers defense forced the Jets into a three-and-out following the free kick. However, the Jets were able to down another punt inside the Steelers' 10-yard line. It looked to be a much shorter kick, but the ball took a very favorable bounce for the Jets and rolled to the Steelers 8.

Looking at the box score, the stats would lead you to believe the Steelers won the game. They enjoyed a 2:36 advantage in time of possession over the Jets. The Steelers outgained the Jets on the ground and in the air. Furthermore, the Pittsburgh offense outscored the New York offense, 17-13.

While special teams were the biggest factor in deciding the game, they weren't the only factor. Ben Roethlisberger fumbled twice. Luckily for Pittsburgh, neither fumble resulted in a turnover as Flozell Adams recovered one and Roethlisberger recovered the other. However, both fumbles resulted in huge losses.

The fumble that Roethlisberger recovered came on the Steelers' final drive in which they fell 10 yards short of the end zone. While the Steelers maintained possession and were able to convert a subsequent 3rd-and-24, they were forced to use their final timeout after the fumble. That timeout could have made a lot of difference in this game as the clock wound down.

The entire body of work by the offense looked much better than it has in several games. However, in some spots, Bruce Arians' play-calling could have been better, particularly on the draw play that resulted in a Jets safety. Roethlisberger was in the shotgun and Mewelde Moore was in the game to try to fool the Jets into believing the Steelers were intending on passing. However, it was a poorly designed draw. You never want to get a runner going east-west in your end zone. The Steelers would have been better suited actually passing from that formation.

The Jets were coming off a two-game losing streak and desperately needed a win. The Jets may have needed this win more than the Steelers in order to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Steelers were also missing Troy Polamalu and Heath Miller. But the fact remains that the Steelers could have clinched a playoff berth as at least a wild-card team with a win over the Jets and failed to do so. The Steelers cannot afford to back into the playoffs, especially considering that they haven't locked up a spot yet.

The Steelers are narrowly clinging to the division lead in the AFC North by virtue of its in division record over the Ravens. The Steelers should be able to beat the Carolina Panthers; however, the Cleveland Browns aren't a guaranteed win anymore. The Steelers need to win both games to ensure being the top team in the division. The good news is that the Steelers are still in the driver's seat and hold their destiny in their own hands, despite the loss to the Jets.

The Steelers can't seem to put a complete game together. In the past few weeks, they've struggled in at least one phase of the game. It had been the offense struggling, but now it's special teams. Pittsburgh has overcome many obstacles this season due to injury. The Steelers have the potential to make a deep run into the playoffs, but need to work through some problems first. Hopefully, they handle this obstacle like so many others this season.

their punter was just outstanding today.

Yes he was, two or three punts inside the 5 yard line. The Steelers offense had a long field all night and that is part of the reason they played well, but only had 17 points.
