i say give him a look. would've been drafted in 06 had it not been for a torn acl. judging by his success outside of the league i'd say that injury has healed. yeah, bring him in. but what are some other options? who else is out there?

According to PG they are working out Ricky Schmitt today.

Schmitt was signed by the Tennessee Titans on March 15, 2010. Had 2 punts for 55 yrd gross average and 50.5 net average. Both led the NFL in Preseason. Also had 3 kickoffs, 2 going for touchbacks. [2] Ricky was 1 of 5 players to be released on August 31, 2010, in the roster cutdown to 75.

I like the part about kickoffs!!!!!!!!

We cut him in 2008 after 3 days with us. I wonder why a leg like that hasn't stuck with a team.

Why teams make decisions about kickers is really one of the big mysteries in the NFL. Look at Reed. No one wanted him and then he comes in here on a try out and is very good for the next 5+ years and then implodes this year. This happens all the time with kickers.

a lot of times a punter with a huge leg who can't find a home takes a long time to get the ball off.

That is a good thought. You don't just cut a guy who can bomb punts like this guy appears to be able to do. I could see this certainly.

Steelers to work out former Penn State punter

By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, December 6, 2010

With punter Daniel Sepulveda out for the rest of the season, the Steelers will work out Penn State graduate Jeremy Kapinos tomorrow at Heinz Field, the Tribune-Review has learned.

Kapinos punted in one game for the Indianapolis Colts this season, averaging 44.5 yards on four kicks and putting two of them inside the 20-yard line.

A third-team All-American for Penn State in 2006, Kapinos was the Green Bay Packers’ punter last season and averaged 43.8 yards per kick.

Sepulveda tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee in the Steelers’ 13-10 win against the Ravens when his cleat got caught in the turf at M&T Bank Stadium.

Sepulveda got hurt while trying to make a tackle on Lardarius Webb’s 35-punt return early in the second quarter.

Kicker Shaun Suisham punted the rest of the way though Sepulveda held on both of his field-goal attempts and his extra-point try.

Sepulveda, who missed the 2008 season with the same injury to his plant leg, is seventh in the NFL with an average of 45.5 yards per punt. He ranks ninth in net average (39.1).

Steelers work out punter

Monday, December 06, 2010
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Free-agent punter Ricky Schmitt, who worked out briefly with the Steelers in 2008, will be at the team's South Side facility Tuesday and could be signed as a replacement for injured Daniel Sepulveda.

Schmitt, who has been in various training camps with four other NFL teams, most recently this summer with the Tennessee Titans, has kicked in just one regular-season game. He was one of the leading punters in college football when he attended NCAA Division II Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, W.Va.

The Steelers are searching for a punter after Sepulveda sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament against the Baltimore Ravens and is out for the season.

The Steelers brought in Schmitt in October, 2008 when they were looking for a replacement for ineffective Mitch Berger. That was the year Sepulveda missed the entire season with a torn ACL.

But they signed former Cleveland Browns punter Paul Ernster instead, only to later release Ernster and re-sign Berger, who punted for them in Super Bowl XLIII.

Not sure if this has been written already, but does anyone know if the new punter (whomever that may be) will be the holder on FG's and PAT's or does someone else already on the roster take that role?

Hey, I thought Suisham looked d@mn good on those pooch punts. :P Just looked really awkward on the catch ... into his body instead of arms extended.
