Steelers worked out Nick Reed, Pannel Egboh

The National Football Post
Nov 24, 11:03 pm EST

The Pittsburgh Steelers auditioned two defensive ends earlier this week.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Steelers worked out Nick Reed and Pannel Egboh.

Reed has played previously for the Seattle Seahawks, recording 17 tackles and one sack.

At the University of Oregon, Reed finished with a school-record 29 1/2 sacks and 51 1/2 tackles for losses.

In 2008, he was an All-American when he posted 13 sacks and led the nation with five fumble recoveries.

Egboh is a 6-foot-6, 287-pound former Stanford player who has previous stints with the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

It's hard for me to get excited about working out FA at this point in the season. If they any good, then why aren't they already with a team?

My brain tricked me, I thought the post said "Offensive Line".

Are we working any of them out?

Panel Agboh was a guy that Chadman was interested in during the draft- big strong guy that, from memory, tested well. It can't hurt- even if he is PS material for now.

Reed probably fits the 'adds to the rotation' group. If Smith really is done- it's not the worst move to make. Fit bodies at this time of the season are very useful.

I like the fact that they seem to be getting a batch of "resumes" for the DL that they can take a look at in the off season when the rosters expand. It shows a smart approach to 24/7 scouting.

DL is an area that we need to restock sooner rather than later but the other thing to consider is that you need to add lots more DL to the roster when you switch to the 4-3 defense and they are getting candidates lined up :stirpot

You may be right...Reed is only 6'1" and 250 lbs., so we can't be looking at him as a 3-4 DE. He might be a candidate for a backup 4-3 DE.

Future 4-3 Defense
Worilds Hampton Hood Woodley
Harrison Timmons Sylvester

A very solid front seven that has five very young, talented players plus two All Pro veterans. If we go this way next year, then we don't need to look here in the first few rounds of the draft. We will be able to concentrate on OL and CB in Rd. 1 and 2. :tt1

OK, back to the 2010 drive for Seven!! :tt2 :tt2

What's this about?

Maybe it was mostly about sending a message to Keisel. Interesting that, once the Steelers worked out these FA's, Keisel's hammy was suddenly healed.

It would be hard for me to believe that as long as Lebeau is in the Burgh we will switch to any semblance of a 4-3 full time.

The 4-3 may come to the team someday but I think it will be part of Lebeau retiring.

I believe Keisel was noted as feeling better before the workouts.

This has nothing to do with Keisel. It is about depth and depth only as we inch closer to the playoffs.

Probably, but, where is Reed going to provide depth? He is way too small to play 3-4 DE. He is even a small 4-3 DE at 6'1" and 250 lbs.

Reed is a name to file away in the event that we need 3-4 OLB depth.

Egboh is a name to file away in the event that we need 3-4 DE depth.

Reed would be a project at 3-4 OLB. It looks like he has played ILB and 4-3 DE, so I'd think the Steelers would look for an experienced 3-4 OLB if they are going for depth, i.e. someone who can step right in and play. But Reed is only 23, so he may be a consideration for the future.

Reed may only be 23 but he would likely be 26 by the time he was alllowed to play in our defense after serving his mandatory probationary period "learning" the defense.
