I'm not gonna overreact to one game. I still remember how philly whooped us 2 years ago yet we still one the superbowl. I'm wondering though if this really was the blueprint on how to beat the Steelers. The saints didn't even pretend to run the ball. throw every down against us and it looks like it may just work. 10 years ago the bend but don't break strategy was sound. I think with the way the NFL favors offense these days and the crap ticky tack calls that seem to be made dang near every drive to keep it going - it might be time to start pressing up a bit.
as for the offense - if we can't pick up a blitz and hit hot reads, pound it in from 1 inch, well............
on the plus side, if we were due a let down - i'd much rather it be against a non-division opponent. hopefully, there will be quite a bit if fire in their bellies next week.

If I was an opposing OC I would definately plan on passing 70% of the time against us. Most of the time our corners play soft (especial Bmac). There are always gaps in the zones and we are content with simply keeping the play in front of us. If a team is patient in how they pass, it is possible to simply move right down the field on us. We aren't blitzing as aggressively as we have in the past and teams are taking advantage of the coverage scheme. I think the big test for Coach D's defense will be against the Pats. Brady will do the same thing that Brees did tonight and since that's the type of attack they've had all year anyway, I think they will be even more effective than the Saints were.

We could easily lose these next two games. In fact, I can't paint a scenerio where we win with our offense playing like crap.

Yes, this is the blueprint to beat our defense and it has been for some time. The Pats have done it to us before. Not every team is built to do it but for the ones that are, we will struggle to defend it. That said, I think our D did pretty well for most of the game until Heath fumbled our chances away.
The blueprint to stop our offense is to make sure Ben doesn't have more than 3 seconds to get rid of the ball. That seems to be a not so difficult task with our O-Line. Bruce Arians needs to create a set of plays to burn teams that are sending the house rather than just hoping Ben magically avoids the rush until the receivers get downfield.

Against us last night: 21 rushes ; 44 passes. (NFL.com).
Screens last night, to take pressure off Ben when they send the house play after play, after the 1st series or so: About zero? (subjective, painful memories).
These two things will make it hard for us to win against OCs that actually game plan against us. Not, apparently, like our OC does.

It seems like every week in chat we're hoping the defense will pull us out again. It's not even good enough when they get a turnover. We need THEM to score. I know our Oline is far from the best in the league, but with the weapons we have on offense, you'd think they could muster more production than they have. To advance to/in the playoffs your offense doesn't have to be great (see Peyton Manning's record :moon ), but they have to atleast be productive and be able to score quickly. Our first quarters have been putrid.

Yep. I was screaming at the TV for some quick slants or screens (Sanders?) to beat the blitz. It seems like we always want the 80 yd bomb on the blitz. I don't know if it's Ben, BA, Tomlin, or all three, but we need to do something to slow down the blitz when it's like last night.
It felt alot like the Philly game from a couple years back. I hate that we never make adjustments! I'm not usually a BA basher, but last night was painful to watch on O.
As for the D, this is the blueprint and has been for 5-6 years. BUT, you need to have a great QB and multiple weapons in the passing game. Most teams can't do this. And even still, NO only scored 20 pts with the D on the field all night. Teams will do this to us more (I don't know why they don't start doing the at the beginning of the year), but alot of things have to go right for it to be successful.

but the few who can, you usually meet in the playoffs at some point.

Our defense is part of the problem so it is kinda tough for them to "pull us out" when they can't stop QBs completing between 60-70% of their passes.

:Agree watching the replays from behind the line everyone was single covered and running like 20 yards down the field. i dont understand why everything has to be deep throws

That's true, but even with them outgaining us quite a bit in the first half in passing yards, we were still tied and not losing. And if Tomlin would have opted for NOT kicking the field goal, I feel confident we would have held them scoreless.

The defense played a very good game last night. They were on the field for 35 minutes, and defended 44 passes from one of the top 5 quarterbacks (probably top 3) in the league and only yielded a 7.0 YPA and 20 points. The fact that a team can completely disregard the run and still compete in this league shows you how unimportant running the ball is in today's NFL.
The Steelers will win 9 out of 10 games if the defense plays like they did last night and the offense is at least mediocre. The Steelers should be able to score 21 points in any given game, last night was not a good night for the offense.
