As ludicrous as it sounds, the helmet is doing more harm than good. Guys do indeed lead more with their helmets as a weapon than the old days. Why? It hurt more in the old days for offense and defense.
Since its typically the defensive players that are being battering rams, I say do this.
Instead of fining or suspending a player, make him use a slightly less protective helmet. A few weeks of a weaker helmet might get him to ease off or fear his own demise. It won't kill him, since he'll be easing off. And rarely do blockers knock a guy out (outside of Ward). No, its the LBs and Safeties. Its not that they are sooo tough. No, they are just taking advantage of a player in a weakened position. So they can still come up and hit someone, but with a weaker helmet, they will come up safer and not try to kill someone.

Well, everyone except Harrison. :)
He only wears a helmet because the league makes him.

I was thinking about this earlier today.

It's like bare knuckle boxing versus pro boxing. If you protect your knuckles, you can pound someone until they become brain damaged. But with bare knuckles, your knuckles will break before you can seriously injure someone.

But on the flip side, the helmet seems to offer more good than harm due to accidental collisions. I'd hate to play ST with a leather helmet.

I wonder if there's a middle ground of a new material helmet made of a similar material to Crocs or something like that. Something stronger than leather, but softer than the modern helmet, and at the same time more protective.

Heck, how bout a boxing glove on a player's head?

We were talking about this at work and one guy suggested getting rid of all helmets and padding. Make them play like rugby players do. He said you might have more broken bones but thinks it will cut down on the concussions because players will just naturally protect their heads.

It was an interesting idea.

I think it would be boring.

It's not a problem. It's an overreaction again by a man who obviously isn't qualified or intelligent enough to run this league. Goodell is nothing but a fan boy who's in a position of power, and he has done nothing but abuse that power since he got the job.

Goodell must go.

That will save the league and it's integrity.

We're stuck with Goodell and his ridiculous reign UNLESS and until his crappy decisions start costing the NFL money.

I wish we could organize a one-week BOYCOTT to show our displeasure.

I'm in. This putz Goodell is causing me to be an angry man again. A nice Sunday of hunting will help instead of hearing the NFL talking heads spouting the party line sounds nice.

Am I allowed to shoot an elk 47 times? Just asking. No reason.

You should shoot one 92 times in honor of our martyr.

I have often thought of this or something similar. They do have those oversized helmets that protect the head better, but, I agree with you there has to be a way to redesign a helmet that does not have a non-absorbing, solid material on the outside.

I'm in the process of forming a new style of helmet. They will be so cool, people will buy them and wear them while bicycling

Just take the tops off of the helmets so they can't hit with the tops of their helmets, leave a big hole up there. Or maybe they wear those cones they put on dogs to keep them from chewing on themselves. Maybe use those old-style hockey goalie facemasks, or no - no more facemasks, just go all Gump Worsley. While they're all out to reform, contract with Kotex or StayFree to make softer shoulder pads. And let the players wear basketball shorts. Recycle nut-cups from weddings for use in the NFFL. Whatever. Anyway, looking forward to your helmet redesign, SS.

Just don't head-butt the elk, or a game warden will come by and give you a $75,000 fine.

I heard JoePa commenting that they should take off players facemasks and it will fix the problem.

I must agree about playing without facemasks.

Remember when Don Beebe of the Bills used to wear that padded helmet?? Why not just pad all helmets?

Then all players would look like the great Gazoo!!

How funny would it be if it were former Armstrong County Deputy Game Warden Jack Lambert???

That was actually Mark Kelso.

Niner Steve Wallace also had some extra padding up there, but I'm not sure what material they used for him, since it seems to be distingrating on him:
