The Steelers have worked out two young quarterbacks but do not plan to sign one, either to their 53-man roster or their practice squad this week, even though Dennis Dixon will have surgery on his injured left knee Wednesday.

Former WVU quarterback Jarrett Brown is here today, and they also worked out Levi Brown, most recently with the Buffalo Bills.

Mike Tomlin said they have no plans to sign a third quarterback, and another source said they will not sign one to the practice squad either.

That news means the Steelers are confident that Bryon Leftwich's left knee is healthy enough for them to go with him and Charlie Batch as their only two quarterbacks vs. the Buccaneers in Tampa Sunday. Leftwich sprained the MCL in his left knee Sept. 2 and returned on a limited basis to practice last week.

Tomlin said he will see how things develop in practices this week before he selects his starting quarterback for Sunday.

Dixon has a torn lateral meniscus. Tomlin said the Steelers will wait to see the results of the surgery before they make any decision on Dixon, who could be a candidate for injured reserve.

Tomlin also announced that both nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) and offensive tackle Max Starks (ankle) are doing well and likely to return to play after missing last Sunday's game in Tennessee.
