Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dennis Dixon will have surgery on Wednesday to repair the torn knee ligaments he suffered in Sunday's 19-11 win against the Tennessee Titans.

Coach Mike Tomlin said veteran Charlie Batch is the favorite to start this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"You've got to say Charlie's in pole position because he's got a clean bill of health," Tomlin said Tuesday, via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Batch, 35, relieved Dixon on Sunday. The Steelers re-signed Byron Leftwich on Monday, and Tomlin said Leftwich, who suffered a knee injury at the end of the preseason, will compete with Batch.

The timetable for Dixon's return is unknown, and Tomlin didn't rule out potentially placing him on injured reserve.

The 2-0 Steelers are halfway through Ben Roethlisberger's four-game suspension.

Could be out of town as well as out indefinitely.

Dixon has shown in two weeks that we need another real option as a back up QB in case anything ever happens to Ben.
