Times photo by LUCY SCHALY Steelers beat the Atlanta Falcons in the season opener at Heinz Field Sunday. Hines Ward makes a record-setting catch Sunday.

PITTSBURGH --- Hes 34. Hes playing in his 13th pro season. And hes still the leader of the Steelers wide receivers.

Hines Ward proved that once again Sunday with a strong performance that kept him moving up the NFLs all-time pass receiving charts.

Every year, I seem to amaze myself, Ward said.

In a 15-9 win over Atlanta, Ward caught six passes for 106 yards. He helped Dennis Dixon by getting open and by also offering calming advice to the third-year quarterback who was making just his second pro start.

Ward threw a text-book block on a cornerback on the last play of the game that helped spring running back Rashard Mendenhall on his 50-yard, game-winning touchdown.

Afterwards, Ward celebrated an opening-day victory and two more personal milestones. Hes now just the 12th player in NFL history to surpass 900 catches and 11,000 receiving yards in a career.

My game is fine, Ward said. I supposedly lost a step three years ago. But I still caught 95 balls last year. Its been like that my whole career. No one knows how I keep doing it, but by the end of the year, look at what Ive done production-wise. Im right up there with the better guys in the league.

Last year, Ward ranked eighth in the league in receptions and tied for 10th in receiving yards (1,167).

Ward knows that someday he wont be able to perform at a high level. When that time comes, hell likely call it a career. But until then, he wants to keep playing on.

In the spring of 2009, Ward signed a four-year, $22 million contract extension that locks him in with the Steelers through the 2013 season.

We know all its going to come to an end one day, Ward said. Who knows? Maybe this will be my last year. Maybe next year will be my last year.

All I know is that Im going to keep on playing until my wheels fall off.

Say "I" all you want to, but he is a team player. The proof is in his blocks and the way he sells out his body to make blocks and hurt people. He also will catch a ball in traffic, no matter what kind of punishment he takes. You don't see WRs like Moss or OchoStinko doing such things. Perhaps he only does it for himself, who knows, I'm not inside his head. But, there's no denying how the team, as well as we the fans benefit from his actions....no matter what his motivation is. And BTW, his quote about 'amazing himself' could've perhaps been taken out of context, oh nah, the media never does that.

Hines has always been one of my most favorite steelers. I just love the style of football he plays. Lately though his mouth makes me think he is a real arse off the field ... not that it matters to me. As long as he doesn't hurt another person he can be the biggest douche in the world off the field. What he does on the field matters to me and Hines gives it 100% all of the time.

I think about every team in the NFL wishes they had a Hines Ward on their team even if they complain about him. He's not flashy, but he's so very effective and a complete football player.

Hopefully, he has another bang up year that ends with his retirement! (He did say that he would retire if we won another SB). :tt2

Do you sit there and not cheer? Do you nod your head in approval and take one for the team? Does it piss you off when he makes a big play?

Not trying to be douchetastic or anything...just curious.

I root for Hines on the field.

He's also a self centered moron off of it.

Just this week, all week, he told media how he wants to beat Atlanta because he's never done it.

And sure enough, after the game he's saying "I finally beat Atlanta!"

I guess the moron forgot he beat Atlanta in 1999 on MNF.

I like Hines - I'll be sad when we don't get to see that smile anymore.

Here's what he tweeted after the game:

Great day! I'm so happy for our team. Dennis played his tail off and Mendenhall ran wild. The whole team played great. Troy pulled a Santonio catch. Great to finally beat the falcons. Out with all my friends and family celebrating. I left everything on the field. We are gonna enjoy this one tonight.

Today he said...

Today I'm a little sore from the game. But it's good that I'm sore, that means I did something. After watching the film from the ATL game, I realized that I had 2 mental errors. I gotta be there 100% for Dennis. So today, I am working out, getting a massage, and doing my radio show on 102.5 wdve at 7. Plus, watchin Jersey Shore. I gotta get caught up. That's my show. Hines

Hines = Hall of Fame. Dude will retire in the top twenty in all time receiving yards, receiving TDs, and top ten or so in receptions. Little known fact, he already has more TD receptions than Michael Irvin (Hines=78 Irvin=65) in the same # of seasons played. Add in the blocking, the physical sacrifice/style of play, 2 Super Bowl Victories and a SP MVP. It just has to be. The Media may hate him, but damn they better respect him.

After catching six balls for 108 yards Sunday, Hines Ward compared himself to Forrest Gump, adding, "Every year, regardless of what people say, it's my mindset that I have to go out and prove the naysayers wrong."

Naysayers? What naysayers? There are no naysayers. I think Ward is a phony, hypocrite and shameless self-promoter, but I've never disputed his ability or performance. Ward has mostly cheerleaders in this town, and that includes the majority of the football media. If he's not the most popular Steeler, he's close.

I understand the art of self-motivation via constantly putting a chip on your shoulder, but this is gibberish. Ward's favorite mantra is, "Nobody ever gave me a chance." To quote Mike Prisuta of the DVE Morning Show, "Hines Ward got drafted in the third round. THAT'S A CHANCE!"

Furthermore, how on earth is Ward in ANY WAY comparable to Forrest Gump? I just don't get that one AT ALL.

Ward is a lot smarter than Forrest Gump, that's certain. Witness what happened Sunday. When Dennis Dixon started leaving passes short in the game's early going, Ward broke his routes a bit short and came back to the ball HARD. Brilliant.

I love watching Hines Ward play. I just wish he'd stop talking nonsense.

Of course, I'm sure he'd say the same about me. WHAMMY!

Clearly you fail to understand the "Crash Rules".
Not only must you refrain from saying anything positive about Ward, even more important,

You CANNOT EVER get excited about anything a Steeler QB who is not named "Ben" does due to an irrational fear that Ben will lose his Job.

Double M weighs in....

Furthermore, how on earth is Ward in ANY WAY comparable to Forrest Gump? I just don't get that one AT ALL.

Actually this IS the point about Ward that explains it all.

I don't think he is nearly as mean spirited as some think.

He is what I would call "stupidly" honest.

Most People self censor their comments taking into account how it will be perceived, effect on the team etc.

Do I for on second think Hines is the I ONLY Steeler who feels Ben let the team down? No, even Ben said as much.
But saying it serves no purpose and is stupid beyond belief.

Same with this Quote.
Do you really think Troy doesn't "amaze himself" with an uncanny play all the while humbly pointing heavenward? Yet Troy is the last person you will hear verbalize it.

So yes I See a strong resemblance between Hines and Gump.

Both achieved far beyond expectations and more importantly neither strike me as being too bright when they open their mouths. :)

This is where I think we agree.
But far from arrogance, it is based on insecurity, quite the opposite.
I think Hines has a severe case of "small man syndrome".

But I think this is what makes him achieve.

Ben still uses the draft as motivation...

Ben uses the draft as motivation because he wants to beat the 10 teams who passed on him. Hines claims every year that media, fans, say he's done.

Where? Who? When?

Just like the whole name on the helmet "because he has to make the team".

He did this in 2006 also, mere months after signing the biggest contract in team history, where was he going? He was in no danger of losing his job.

aggiebones

Crash, who cares?

I think you may be over the line with your anti Ward obsession. This is like the Rooney slandering. When someone is high on everyone's list, some people feel slighted and have to take a shot at them to knock them down a bit. Never understood our own fans needing to do this. I assume jealousy.

Madden is the biggest douche I have ever heard in Pittsburgh. Mostly just saying things to get a reaction.

--------------------------
So Ward needs a bit of self-whipping to get going? The kid produces every year none stop. He prefers a little incline on his treadmill of life, so be it.

HOW can you thrash the guy that is clearly the team captain and identity? He is no more "I" than any player in the entire league. We have clips on this thread about him talking up the other players on the team , WHILE mentioning mistakes he made.

The problem is you take his quotes out of context without seeing the questions he was asked.

And why do people think he hates Ben? Hines talks too quickly to the media for sure. But what of him walking up to Ben to 'escort' him on the first day of camp when clearly Ben is nervous. He's a teammate of Ben and if you've ever played sports, you'll know that some gets get on your nerves while you still like them in doses. You are not best buds with everyone, but normally you enjoy the everyone en masse. So maybe he doesn't hang out with Ben and all WRs fight with their QBs for the ball.

Swann and Stallworth did it with Terry, yet Terry promoted both for the Hall.
Name 1 WR that didn't have some kind of aggressive relationship with his QB? They all have yelled at the QB in the huddle for the ball at some point and after 5 years of battle, I'm sure he and Ben have had a few shouting matches. But a whole lot more laughs.

I don't think Fitz or AJohnson make it in first because they will have a long wait since they are very young. Also if either gets hurt significantly in the next couple years, they would never make it in. So they are not guarantees yet, like someone at the back end of a career. If the voters for the HOF look at Hines Ward as a football player and not a WR only he will get in long before many of you believe he will get in. When Hines Ward is done he will probably have 1000+ catches, 90+ TDs, 12,500+ yards and will be known as a complete football player at the WR position, because of his propensity to knock people on the arses when he's blocking them.

He isn't first ballot which should be reserved for those rare players that transcend the game or have brought about changes to the way the game is played, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Mel Blount, Mike Webster, Dan Marino, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana, Walter Payton, Jim Brown, etc. After that, great is great and Hines Ward has been great for a long time.

"Hines Ward finally beat Atlanta"

"Hines Ward amazes Hines Ward"

The next time he flies over to Korea in the offseason, we need to force him to take a detour Down Under for some third person lessons from Chadman.

Seriously, though...I'll take Hines' above-mentioned "I" statements over other "I" statements like, say...

Because Lenny (Crash) say so...how dare you question him.

AggieB...you are spot on with your earlier post.
Some of us try to paint this picture in absolutes...it really just isn't accurate.
I call Crash--Lenny Bruce because he fights to right an absolute injustice in his opinion...until he becomes a caricature and the message is lost.

You know what Crash, the world is an imperfect place...bad things happen to good people all the time. The scales of justice aren't equal. Even if somehow everyone on this site agreed with your pedantic rants...it wouldn't change a freaking thing.

Ben isn't the victim you make him out to be...sure the justice doled out may be arbitrary, incosistent, and sometime seemingly capricious...but if this is some sort of shock to you...what is that stuff you are smoking?

The energy you exhaust for Ben and Hines is really staggering. Are you really a Steeler fan or just someone who likes to drone on hours on end about how life sucks?

I would posit this to you...do you think a fan who likes the Steelers but dislikes Ben for what he has done is a real Steeler fan?

If you say no--then using that logic I would suggest you aren't a real Steeler fan because of your obsessive hatred of Hines Ward.

Go ahead and take snippets out of context to continue your descent into Lenny Bruce-dom. I am sure it will help build your post count.

Read the full context of my point not the snippet that Lenny took...let me reiterate...your Quixotic appraoch to this endeavor is a pointless waste of time.

This has nothing to do with legal justice...you act as though a great wrong has been committed. Honestly, I don't care what has happened...it's over, fair or not.

A great deal of you can't seem to let it go. Too bad because in your tiresome rants you are going to miss a great deal of football discussion to try and prove a irrelevant point. Again, even if every single poster here agrees with you what does it matter.

You know I don't know Ben, I don't care to know Ben. He has abilities to play a game that many of us would die to be able to play. He makes a great deal of money playing a game that many of us play (as long as are bodies allow) for free.

My wife's friend has been battling cancer for 10 years....she has been an inspiration, doing a 200 mile bike ride--while on chemo, adopting and raising a child, being a loving mother, wife and generally a good person. Today she counts her life in weeks...not years.

I guess when you start spouting off about injustices to a 100 million dollar ballplayer...I look at the bigger picture and think relatively speaking he is going to be fine.

Well it's already been too much time wasted on The Church of Poison Mind that some of you belong to...enjoy your misery of trying to prove the pointless.

I find it incredible how we all judge each other. There isnt a single perfect human being on this planet. Hines has made mistakes. Ben has made mistakes. Failed marriages are a way of life in this country. it is a social norm. People letting success go to there heads and behaving inappropriately goes on day in and day out in the sports arena, entertainment arena, business arena and politics arena. As long as Ben understands that his behavior is, in fact, deplorable and grows as a person from this event he will become a better person because of it. As for Hines, he knows he is at the end of a prolific football career and doesnt want anyone forgetting about his accomplishments. He's a poster boy for everything that the NFL wants. Dont understand how people can think Hines and Ben have a bad relationship. Both times they won the superbowl they were arm in arm. Ward's one of the greatest Steelers of all time and when its all said and done Ben will be as well. His football career up to this point has been an unbelievable rollercoaster ride of incredible successes and failures. But his final act(his remaining years) will be the greatest of all. He will be like the phoenix. Everyone will recall how, early in his career he wasnt such a great person. But this guy, I believe, finally gets it. They are both great-Hines now and Ben later. This final blunder of Bens comes at just the right time. These next 5+ years will his greatest and he will know how to handle his future scccess and be able "rewrite his past failure" IMO of course. Hines is great and he can say whatever he wants.

To the VICTORS go the spoils. Not the also rans on teams forced to throw alot to chase teams beating their arse.

Hines has something that none of the other WRs on that list have...and I believe that it makes a difference with the HoF voters:

76 catches - 1064 yards - 8 TDs all in the post-season

Add to that the SB rings and the SB MVP award and you have something that none of those other players have...

Ward's post-season stats also smoke Cris Carter and Tim Brown...

Crash you are borderline slanderous.

There is nothing wrong at all with inviting women only to a VIP room. Frankly, I'd do the same thing. Why the feck would I want a bunch of douchebags like you in my private room when I can enjoy several young ladies.

The difference between Ben and Hines is that Ben to some degree manhandled a young lady in a bathroom, exposing himself and acting like a total moron.

Hines likely picks out the filly of his choice and takes her to a hotel and bangs the hell out of her. Or something else remotely acceptable to the police.

The problem is not excluding men at his table, which I find smart if you can pull it off. The problem is discretion when closing the deal. Hines NEVER made any comments similar to Ben not being allowed to have sex with strange women. That's his right. His comments were VERY mild and made mention solely of being discreet. He is a prominent figure in the league who the league uses to sell its product. He blundered in a big way. He pays the price.
Double standard, yes. Acceptable, yes cause he accepted the title role from the league when they asked him. Then screwed up.

My take:

He may talk too much sometimes. HOWEVER, give me Hines over truly self-centered receivers like OchoStinko, TO, or Randy Moss any day.

Yes, Hines may whine at times, but he still produces on the field, and he shows every week that he's a team player. He continually puts his body on the line, does what it takes to help the team win, and he does it all with a smile on his face. He's also one of the few star WR's who, IMO, is in the game purely because he loves it. He doesn't have his own TV show or throw an attention-grabbing celebration every time he scores a TD. He's in football to play.

So yes, I think it's okay for him to pat himself on the back once in a while. Plus, I didn't detect an "I'm better than everyone else" attitude from this article, more like an "I'm proud that I'm still playing at this level" attitude.

I agree. But unfortunately Ward doesn't as far as Ben is concerned. If Ward is going to bash Ben for putting himself in a bad situation, then Ward himself needs to not do the same thing.

What was that about being slanderous? You have no proof, NONE, of the above statement as far as his conduct with Miss DTF.

Yeah Hines' comment that the suspension was justified was mild also huh?

Like I said, it only takes one female to start talking.

Ward should remember that after his next sermon to the media about Ben.

Because if the rumor that was posted on LetsGoPens.com about Hines years ago is true or if it ever got made public? Wow!

Ward hasn't put himself in a bad situation. You can pick up a RUMOR online about anyone. You personally have no idea about Ward. You are making stuff up and probably planted the rumor yourself for some strange reason. Either way, Ward partying down with some chicks is certainly legal. What is your complaint here? Hearsay???

Ben did take a woman into the bathroom of a bar in a small college town and acted like a moron. He said he had sexual contact with her, which is the manhandling part. What did I say that wasn't true???
Being a moron is not the problem. I've been a moron plenty of time, but when it comes to publically walking the line on sexual situations, he was gonna get hammered. He is a face of the NFL. Its not a white/black thing like you keep mentioning. He gets more harsh treatment because the NFL had elevated him to a higher status, thus increasing his endorsements, etc. The league took a black eye for this, not a wetwilly like they do with some of the other doofuses in the league.

That said, I like both guys as Steelers.

Kissing is sexual contact.

You weren't there. You don't know what Ben and Miss DTF did.

I make nothing up.

FACT: Hines is no longer married.

FACT: Hines ran a bar with a convicted drug dealer.

Sure he has. He's seen plenty of VIP rooms in his time in Pittsburgh.

Just like Ben.

Why is Hines divorce a big deal? They happen all the time. Bringing up Hines' divorce is comedy and shows how bitter you are.

Is Hines a marriage counselor?

Hines talks a lot but it's always been football related and you can't knock him for his opinion on his QB who has (drawn negative attention) and put the team in limbo 3 offseasons thus far.

There is nothing wrong with VIP status. If Ben did it without incident in GA and we found out about it later we would probably still be against it given the civil trial. Prior to Tahoe I'm sure Ben was in a ton of VIP sections and no one gave a damn.

Hines Ward: Steelers still angry about Titans' stomping on Terrible Towel

With the Pittsburgh Steelers visiting the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the memory of the Titans' 2008 disrespecting of the Terrible Towels has come back into view.

Several Titans players stomped on the towels -- a favorite emblem of Steelers fans -- as Tennessee defeated Pittsburgh in a regular-season game in late 2008.

And Steelers WR Hines Ward said Wednesday that incident has not been forgotten.

"When you disrespect the towel, you are disrespecting the people here in Pittsburgh and all of Steeler Nation," Ward said. "(Steelers fans) still remember it and they will always remember that."

The Steelers went on to win Super Bowl XLIII after the snub by the Titans, who were en route to the AFC's top seed at the time of the incident. Former Titans LB Keith Bulluck got a Terrible Towel in the mail after the Steelers' Super Bowl win.

Will Ward and his teammates be mindful of the disrespect when they meet on Sunday?

"It doesn't matter," Ward said. "It is a disrespect to us, but we don't play for somebody stepping on a towel or not."

Eh Crash gets what he wants by keeping this thread up and extending it \.

He's trying to add value to false rumors about Ward. Its sad really.

I'm here to say Crash is full of poop, which everyone knows he is.

Kissing is kissing and he would have used this term. He used sexual contact. Noone knows what that is, but it wasn't kissing. Nice try Mr. Slander.

Owning a bar with a convicted drug dealer is not illegal. I rented an apartment with a convicted drug dealer in college. Also not illegal. Nice try though.Convicted doesn't mean current.

You are a convicted slanderer. By me. I convict you. How's that feel? Doesn't matter does it? Neither does anything you say about either Steeler.

Ward not being married anymore is not a rumor, it's fact.

If anything, YOU are spreading rumors claiming Ben "manhandled" Miss DTF.

Owning a bar with a convicted drug dealer is not illegal.

It's risky behavior. Why even associate with a person like that? Why would an NFL player, who makes seven figures a season, need a convicted drug dealer as a middle man to purchase cars for his "friends"? Don't you find that just a tad odd?

Steelers' Ward is 'Obama's guy'

Tuesday, September 21, 2010
By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

http://i55.tinypic.com/fdyeed.jpg

The telephone call came one night last week.

"Mr. Ward, this is the White House calling. I just want you to know that you're President Obama's guy ... "

You think Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward is happy when he catches a touchdown pass? This was a whole new level of joy. We're not talking about service to your NFL team here. Man, we're talking about service to your country.

Ward is one of 16 people to be appointed to President Barack Obama's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. He will be sworn in at a ceremony tonight at the U.S. Capitol. The commission works to improve the quality of life and opportunities for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by providing advice to the president, as well as to education secretary Arne Duncan and commerce secretary Gary Locke.

"Imagine the president picking me to be a face of Asian Americans all over the world. Me? Me?" Ward said, grinning the grin that you see every time the Steelers play. "I thought it was a huge honor when they told me I was going to be one of the candidates. But I never thought I'd actually be picked."

Ward is a future Hall of Famer. He owns virtually every Steelers pass receiving record and, in his 13th NFL season, still is going strong. He has been a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams and was MVP of Super Bowl XL.

But the best thing about Ward is how he's using his celebrity as a professional athlete to help Asian Americans, here and in his native Korea. What good is fame and fortune if you can't use it to benefit others? After Super Bowl XL, Ward started the Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation, which assists mixed-race children who face discrimination. He's making sure that a problem many want to keep quiet gets plenty of attention.

"I lived through what those kids are living through," Ward said. He was born to a Korean mother and an African American father in 1976 in Seoul, South Korea. "It's amazing that they're still facing discrimination," Ward said. "It's almost like the stuff that was happening in the '70s and the '60s. Maybe it isn't that bad, but it's still there."

Ward gave $1 million to start his foundation. He has returned to Korea each offseason since 2006 to mentor biracial children. He also brings Korean kids to stay with American families for a week each football season.

"It's all about building self-confidence," Ward said. "A lot of these kids have self-esteem issues. Many are considered outcasts where they live. I know what they're going through. I experienced some of the same things they are. I just want to show them that they can turn the negativity into a positive and be successful in life."

"I just want you to know that you're President Obama's guy ... "

That's the really neat thing, that Ward's good work is being noticed by people in the highest places. On at least two occasions, Obama called his ambassador to Ireland, Dan Rooney, who also owns the Steelers, to ask about Ward. Here's guessing Rooney gave him some endorsement.

"He's a terrific person," Rooney said of Ward before the Steelers beat the Tennessee Titans Sunday, 19-11. "This is a wonderful honor for him and a wonderful honor for our organization."

Rooney is returning to Ireland and won't be able to attend the ceremony in Washington tonight. But he shared a story about being together with Tae Yong Cho, the Republic of Korea's ambassador to Ireland. "I asked him if he knew Hines Ward," Rooney said. "He said everybody in Korea knows Hines Ward."

Sort of like Pittsburgh, right?

Don't worry about all of this affecting Ward's day job. Today is the Steelers' day off. He will return to Pittsburgh right after the ceremony. He said he won't have any problem serving two bosses.

Ward's football goal -- aside from at least one more Super Bowl ring, of course -- is 1,000 career catches. Watching him reach it should keep Steelers coach Mike Tomlin happy. Ward went over 900 in the Steelers' opening-game win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Ward's humanitarian goal is what he called "enlightenment" of biracial kids. Watching him deliver on that should keep Obama happy. Who better to spread the word than a famous NFL player?

Football and humanitarianism.

"What a combination," Ward said, grinning again.

What a decent man.
