Lewis gets first-team work at left cornerback
By John Harris, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, August 26, 2010

There were two new faces in the secondary when the Steelers returned to practice Wednesday.
Newcomer Will Allen took snaps at free safety with the first-team defense in anticipation of Ryan Clark missing Sunday's preseason game at Denver because of concerns about how he would respond to playing with the sickle cell trait in high altitude.
Allen's presence with the starters was expected. Keenan Lewis practicing at left cornerback with the first team was unexpected.
"I'm out here to practice and get better," said Lewis, a third-round pick in 2009 who worked with the first-team for the first time in his career. "It's big to have the opportunity to put something on tape."
Lewis replaced Bryant McFadden, who injured his right pectoral muscle during the second quarter of Saturday's preseason win against the New York Giants. McFadden sustained the injury while attempting to stop Ahmad Bradshaw's 9-yard touchdown run.
"I knew something was wrong right away," said McFadden, who missed yesterday's practice at the team's South Side facility.
McFadden, who started both preseason games and has practiced exclusively with the first team, said he will proceed with caution.
"I'll see how it feels (today)," he said. "It's almost like a hamstring injury. Be careful and cautious about how you monitor it. Right now, it's a day-to-day process."
McFadden, a second-round draft pick in 2005 who was re-acquired in a draft-day trade, said it's too early to determine if he will play against the Broncos three days from now.
"It all depends on how it goes during the week," said McFadden, who broke his right arm as a member of the Steelers two years ago.
For Lewis, it's an opportunity to show what he can do with the first unit for however long McFadden is sidelined.
As a rookie, Lewis barely played, officially appearing in four games but failing to record a single tackle. Coach Mike Tomlin singled him out for not being able to earn playing time on special teams.
Entering his second season, Lewis has been a starter on special teams while backing up McFadden at left corner. He received additional playing time against the Giants when starter Ike Taylor was ejected early in the game for fighting. Lewis finished with three tackles and one pass defensed before leaving with what Tomlin called a mild concussion.
"Everything's OK," said Lewis, who indicated he has no lingering effects from the concussion.
As for receiving more playing time at left cornerback, Lewis replied, "I'm going to take advantage (of the opportunity). I think I've been doing a good job, making plays against some elite receivers. Been holding my own. When I get my chance, it'll show."

...and thus began the stellar career of Keenan Lewis as starting right cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Didn't he have a concussion against the Giants? Is it smart to be playing him this weekend and risk losing him long term?

Hip Hop Hooray... while some applauded McFadden's attempt at the INT I thought it was a horrible and weak play on the ball. I know it was just one play but given his time in AZ and Gay's lack of production last year I can't watch another year of almost there DB play. I want to see if we have a CB who will put himself between the ball and the WR's and make things happen.
I think Lewis might be that guy.

Burnett did that on a couple of plays against the Giants. I think out of the newcomers he might have the best nose for the ball. He did make some really stupid mental mistakes with penalties though.

We all know Ben won the starting job by beating out Maddox in camp.
it doesn't matter why Lewis is starting... he gets a chance to start and we get to see if he is up for it.

Ben was the only option. And it was the regular season.
Not even close to being the same thing. Except maybe in your mind.

captain obvious strikes again....
it was 2004, the position was QB, offense not defense, Cowher not Tomlin, white not black
No one jumped to conclusions.... Lewis gets a chance to play with the first team, McFadden isn't a long term option. People are excited to see what the kid will do....
and once again the storm troopers show up to try and rain on the parade.

Who's trying to rain on anyone's parade? I'm hopeful that the kid will be good too. But people seem to get carried away with these things. He's playing in a pre-season game with the 1s but only because the starter is injured.
Big difference between that and coming into a regular season game as a QB since there was no other option.
I saw a story on nfl.com with the headline "Pouncy takes center job from Hartwig" or something like that. Then in the body of the article it says *apparently* Pouncey has earned the starting center job........ So all the comments in the article are about how he's now the starter even though it hasn't been stated yet.

yeah burnett has great instincts. im really excited about lewis and burnett. i think both can be solid players in the future. burnett breaks on the ball really well. he did it last season in the raiders game, he just didnt make the catch. so far i think gay is the odd man out. even madison has made more plays in preseason than gay has.
it was only one play in a preseason game. you cant hold AZ against Bmac. its a different defense entirely. they play a lot more man coverage then the steelers do.

D we know it's preseason and we know McFadden was injured last game...
Cruzer said we need to slow our roll because McFadden was injured. It doesn't matter though... any chance to start is a chance to unseat a vet.
Ben made the most of his oppurtinuty when Maddox went down. If he looked like trash Maddox would have replaced him once healthy. That was my point. Maddox wasn't hurt the whole season...
Regardless of preseason or depth charts it's Lewis' chance to show what he has and we are excited. Players lose their spots due to injury all the time.

I got to watch Burnett for several years in college and he has great instincts and breaks on balls very well. I think he can stand in at CB but I think he is an outstanding nickleback. He has the quickness and insticts to excell in that role. I would put him in there over Gay in a millisecond.

I said people need to slow their roll because they're going off half cocked as if this means Lewis has been promoted or something. If BMac wasn't injured he'd be starting this week.
I'm happy any time ANY Steelers player succeeds because it makes the team better. I just don't flip out like some people do because a guy is getting a chance to start a pre-season game due to injury.
If Lewis ends up being better than BMac then that's great for everyone and everyone will be happy for it. Except BMac.

Are you guys kidding me on Burnett? I'm sorry, the guy is gonna have to show me A LOT more to convince me he is anything more than a bum after that Pete Morelli-esque tank-job he pulled last year in that Raider game.

it was his first season and it was only one play. the guy didnt play all that much last year and he made a great break on that pass. he pulled an ike though. ike drops int's all the time and he has been a solid starter for years. gay didnt even break up any passes last season, but yet burnett is the bum so far?

I gotta say, after watching him for most of the first half, I wasn't at all impressed watching Lewis. Beyond the fact that he got himself called for personal fouls TWICE in one half being stupid, he looked totally lost on both plays. Both times he immediately got turned around backwards by the receiver and then had to struggle to get back into the play. Nothing impressive in anything I saw.

Lewis got schooled. But he's a young kid with upside. It's kind of like the Dixon thing where you have a youngster with upside versus a no-upside guy brought in who played like a bum last year with another team. Which way do you go? Maybe some of both until hopefully someone develops.

It looked to me like Lewis was getting caught with his weight on his heels. He looked really bad. Once a receiver gets you with your weight back like that- the DB has no chance at all.
