MOBILE, Ala. -- Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today and accused of possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

The substance was codeine syrup, spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles said Russell was arrested at his home early this afternoon during an undercover investigation. Police did not find a prescription for the codeine during their search, Myles said.

Other people were on the property, but Russell was the only one arrested, according to Myles.

He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m. Russell was released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, according to online records.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court on July 20. A bond hearing is set for July 7.

Russell played high school football at Williamson High School in Mobile. He played quarterback for LSU from 2003 to 2006 and was the No. 1 draft pick for the Raiders in 2007.

Russell went 7-18 as a starting QB. The Raiders released Russell last May.

well, one thing is for certain...the "controlled substance" JaBustus was caught with was not a "performance enhancer".

I thought it was funny to have sports talk hosts who were reporting the JaMarcus story on the radio giving out the recipe for "purple drank"...codeine syrup, 7-Up, and jolly ranchers.

Who is the worst draft pick in NFL history: Ryan Leaf or Russell?

Both were total losers. Russell had all the warning signs and the Raiders idiot owner refused to see them.

Leaf is still the worst... Leaf did not have the warning signs Russell had.

Russell had the size but he was not a great college QB

Russell pocketed more guaranteed money than Leaf. A lot more.

I don't know what the big deal is? Syrup is such a mild drink, you can drink it out of a baby bottle,,, well here let me show you.

I bet his suspension is less than Ben's.

I would have thought his time spent embarrasing himself with the Raiders was time served.

He's not even worth suspending. That fool's career is over. No team is foolish or desperate enough to take a chance with him.

How can you get arrested for having over the counter meds?

I saw both these guys in college and would have picked them high if I was a GM or owner. Size, strength, successful....and now Ryan gets busted for stealing drugs and Russell with this syrup. Isnt this the stuff that is the byproduct of cough medicine when you boil it?

I would love to see the statistics of 1st rounders with their production vs 5th rounders and their production. Obviously there will be more productive 1st rounders but I bet it would not be far off.

Must have been a lot of syrup to have an effect on his 300 lb arse...

He got over... I can't understand how a rookie QB makes more than SB winning QB's...

Stafford is not worth the money he received. It needs to be like the NBA Rookie cap. This way you get a good player who proves he is worth the big money and collects 3 years later or however it works.

I know the window is short in the NFL but damn... paying a guy 15 to 20 million before one snap is crazy.

You could thank Al Davis for this. Look how overpaid some of his guys are. The CB is arguably in the top 3 but Al pays him an amount that may indirectly cause us not to afford Taylor if he has one of his steller seasons. Dan Schneider is another.

Remember the last Dallas Cowboy & 49er Dynasty. I still dont understand how these teams were able to have Deion Sanders playing for them with all the other stars.
