Miami Dolphins Intersted In Ex-BYU Running Back Harvey Unga

June 20th, 2010 by Chris J. Nelson

April's draft has passed and the team has already signed a handful of undrafted free agents, but the Miami Dolphins might not be finished adding players from the college ranks just yet.

According to Rams sideline reporter Brian Stull of 101 ESPN in St. Louis, the Dolphins are reportedly one of the teams that is "very interested" in former BYU running back Harvey Unga.

Unga, who voluntarily withdrew from the university along with his girlfriend in April after an undisclosed violation of the school's strict honor code, will be available in this year's supplemental draft to be held July 15.

BYU's all-time leading rusher with 3,455 yards, the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Unga is slated to work out for at least 14 NFL teams a week before the supplemental draft on July 8.

Despite being seemingly set at running back in 2010, it's not surprising the Dolphins have shown an interest in Unga.

Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both slated for unrestricted free agency in 2011, while Patrick Cobbs is better suited for a situational role and Lex Hilliard is still largely unproven with questionable upside.

A bruising ball-carrier, Unga fits perfectly in the team's power rushing attack and could be utilized in a role similar to that of Marion Barber III in Dallas.

Unga could go as high as the fourth round in the supplemental draft. The supplemental draft, which began in 1977, worked like a silent auction and allows teams to bid on available prospects with draft picks in the following year's draft.

Typically, players in the draft have been declared academically ineligible or have been kicked off their college team for one reason or another.

you're right, Unga is listed at 239 lbs...some articles i've read even suggest he may have to move to FB so the 215 lbs. is obviously wrong.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no! Do not draft Unga!

I've watched him play live in person at least 10 games, and he's not NFL caliber. He does have good size but it's deceptive. He did well in college because the competition was mostly skinny type guys. No way will he be able to drive through NFL defensive lines.

Is he better than Dwyer? Did he produce in a similar manner against a similar level of competition?

Is he worth a 4th round pick?

Just like the regular draft. Teams get the option to pick in normal draft order and they can either make a choice or pass. If they take a selection then they lose that equivalent selection in next year's draft. That is why you hear about someone getting taken in the 4th round with no one taken ahead of them.

Essentially a team is choosing to use next year's pick about 10 months early.

No. Yes/Sort of. No.

Is he worth a 4th? Depends if he can block. He is not going to run away from anyone and I don't believe he is as powerful as his frame would indicate. He has decent speed...I'm guessing probably 4.6. He has above average power...maintains a good base and has enough power moves to break out to the next level. The guy has nice hands...and is a real threat out of the backfield catching the ball.

Overall

Probably an average #2 at the next level. If he can block he would make an intriguing project at FB. Having a FB who can not only block and run...but catch would really expand our 2 back looks.

But, as he stands I would probably pass.

Emokpae will workout for scouts on July 6

Posted by Mike Florio on June 24, 2010

The players who'll participate in the 2010 supplemental draft gradually are lining up their Pro Day workouts.

BYU running back Harvey Unga will work out on July 8, and Illinois defensive tackle Joshua Price-Brent will work out on July 7.

The process gets started on July 6, with Truman State fullback/H-back Vaness Emokpae working out in Kansas City.

We're told that, as of Thursday, 25 teams had contacted Emokpae's agent. It's not yet known whether those teams will be showing up for Emokpae's underwear exploits.
