Jeff Reed hopes to sign a long-term contract with the Steelers. But the veteran kicker said it is not a foregone conclusion that he will be with the team following the 2010 season.

The Steelers used the franchise tag on Reed in February to keep the eight-year veteran from becoming an unrestricted free agent, and he later signed the one-year, $2.841 million deal that came with the designation.

The two sides have until July 15 to agree on a new contract, but when recently asked the chances of that happening, Reed said, "fifty-fifty."

"I want it to happen — they want it to happen — but I'm not just going to sign anything," said Reed, who made 27 of 31 field goal attempts last season.

The Steelers are not actively negotiating contracts with any players, and Reed did not give a number as far as what he is seeking.

Sebastian Janikowski may have raised the salary bar for kickers in February when he signed a four-year, $16 million deal with the Raiders.

If the Steelers and Reed do not agree on a new contract before the middle of July, he will play out his existing one and become a free agent.

"I feel like I'm a pretty valuable kicker to any team," Reed said, "and my heart's set on something specific that I think I'm worth and I won't deviate much from it."

He said his heart is also set on staying with the Steelers.

"If you can play your whole career in one uniform, that's pretty commendable," Reed said. "Even more than that this organization's classy, tons of character and top notch. I've heard a lot of stories about other organizations that I don't want to be a part of."

We'll miss yah BOOZY, good luck wherever you go but i'd rather not see him within our division. I'd kinda want him to stay, cuz you must admit.. when was the last time he missed a FG in a clutch playoff game??

I'd like to see him in the division so he can kick off to us instead of for us.

50-50? That's appropriate because Reed's chances of getting kickoff depth inside the 15 yard line are about 50-50.

I remember Heinz Field chewing up Kris Brown and spitting out Todd Peterson, and don't want to see that happen again. A reliable FG kicker in a difficult place to kick is more important than deep kickoffs. Count me among those that want him back.

Not for anywhere close to insane Janikowski money, mind you. If that is the offer he is waiting for, then he will be waiting a long time. NFL GM's aren't all senile like Al Davis.

I hope they keep Skippy. He's a very good FG kicker in a difficult place to kick. He's worth it to be in the top 5 kickers paid.

Protip: If the annual salary you are demanding is 40% more than the cost of the franchise tag ... you'll get the franchise tag. Or you'll get released.

I'd actually like to see Reed on the open market and watch what teams really offer him. I think he's a lot like Parker - his own opinion of what he's worth is a lot more than it really is, and he gets far more from the Steelers than any of the other 31 teams would give him, just because we're still scared of Kris Brown, so we're worried about OMG, what do we do without him.

Tag his drunken @ss a couple times and then move on, Mr. "I'm not gonna just sign anything" Reed.

He's a kicker for crying out loud, oh wait, kickers and long snappers should be paid whatever they want, sorry. :stirpot

I like Reed and what he can do at Heinz, but there comes a point (monetarily based) that you just can't pay him and have to go looking for a kicker.

Kickers just aren't involved in enough plays to get paid real big money, unless, of course, you can punt, KO and kick FGs.
