Men arrested after break in at Heinz Field

Three men were arrested this morning after police said they scaled a fence to enter Heinz Field.

Shazad Hosi Mehta, 28, of Elmhurst, Ill., Adil A. Minocherhomjee, 22, of La Hoya, Calif., and Neville Noshir Medhora, 27, of Austin, Texas, were charged with criminal trespass and conspiracy to commit criminal trespass.

At around 7 a.m. this morning, Heinz Field security reported they saw three men attempting to climb Gate B into the stadium, Sgt. Patrick Knepp of the Pittsburgh Police's Zone 1 station said.

Security reported the men were unable to climb that gate so they moved to Gate A, where they "used themselves like human ladders" and made it inside the park, Sgt. Knepp said.

Mr. Mehta and Mr. Medhora made it inside the field, while Mr. Minocherhomjee stayed outside the gate, police said. The Pittsburgh Police were called to the scene, and Sgt. Knepp said when they approached , the men started running across the field. They were detained at gunpoint, Sgt. Knepp said.

Sgt. Knepp said the men told police they were trying to get a wallet they had left in Heinz Field.

"The story's not credible," Sgt. Knepp said, since the last game played in Heinz Field was in December.

They were released on $5,000 unsecured bond by magistrate Richard Olasz, Sgt. Knepp said. They are due in city court Thursday morning for a hearing.

Heinz Field's security reported no vandalization or damage to the facility, Sgt. Knepp said. The Pittsburgh police have notified the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security about the incident, he said. They have increased patrols on the North Shore around PNC Park, Heinz Field and Rivers Casino.

Why is it racist? They are Arabs. Big deal.

You not a racist to be concerned about possible terrorism. Concidering these guys to be terrorist, based solely on their names, would be racist. But when you factor in:
1. Al Qeada and other terrorist groups have threatened to attack sporting events.
2. Terrorist groups have been known to "scout" out and test security while planning attacks.
3. These 3 guys are not young drunk college kids, they are older, and should be less suscepible to doing pranks.
4. They are not from the area.
5. They apparently lied to the police about why they were they.
6. And then you factor in their names.

None of this means that they are terrorist, but I for one am glad that the FBI was notified so they can check for any connection to terrorism. Of course if they are terrorist, they would probably skip out on the $5000 bond and not show up for their hearing. Hopefully it's nothing and they're just dumb asses.

Am I the only one who thinks this is pretty dumb?

The cops are concerned enough about the situation to call Homeland Security about these guys, and then they are released on bail. Either they were overreacting to the situation by calling Homeland Security, or the judge was pretty clueless.

What exactly did they say to Homeland Security, I wonder. "Uh, we've got these three guys, kind of Arab sounding names ... yeah, they're from some foreign country, uh, Austin, TX they say ..."

very well said, what concerned me was that they apparently lied to the police and did not have a credible story. and like you, i hope they were just being stupid.

you are also correct in that terrorists are targeting sporting events - the upcoming World Cup has already received several terror threats (see article below):

FIFA: World Cup terror threat made against U.S. opener

Chronicle News Services
April 9, 2010

JOHANNESBURG — A FIFA executive says a terrorist threat has been made on the World Cup.

Secretary general Jerome Valcke commented Friday on an online magazine article that said “how beautiful” it would be if a bomb exploded at the U.S.-England game June 12 in the South African city of Rustenburg.

Valcke says World Cup organizers are working at the “highest level of security.”

The comments appeared to come from a contributor to a militant online magazine called “Yearners for Paradise,” not the usual sites used by al-Qaida and other groups to make threats. In the article, the author says he is not a spokesman for al-Qaida.

Reigning champion Italy has also been alerted about a possible terror threat to it during this year’s FIFA World Cup, an official at the country’s soccer association said Friday.
Italy’s Interior Minister Roberto Maroni spoke with soccer association President Giancarlo Abete to discuss the threat to the event, which starts June 11 in South Africa, said a spokesman, who declined to provide further details.

The news comes two days after CBS News published a report claiming a North African group affiliated to al-Qaida is targeting sport’s most watched event, and specifically England’s match-up with the United States on June 12. The report also said Italy, France and Germany were among the teams targeted.

“FIFA will not comment on any specific potential threats to the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” soccer’s governing body said in a statement. “Such matters will be dealt with together with the relevant security authorities and will not be made public.”

The U.S. State Department said “appropriate precautions” were being taken to protect the month-long tournament. England’s Football Association and Britain’s Home Office declined to comment on the report.

Italy’s Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Friday on his Facebook page “the world wouldn’t tolerate another Munich,” in reference to the hostage taking and murder of members of the Israeli Olympic team in 1972.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb said in the statement, published by CBS News, an attack on the England and U.S. game would claim the lives of “dozens and hundreds.”
“How amazing could the match United States vs. Britain be when broadcasted live on air at a stadium packed with spectators when the sound of an explosion rumbles through the stands,” al- Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb is said to have posted on a militant Web site.

The group has been linked to a number of attacks in North Africa and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
South African officials said each team will be provided with the same level of security during their stays in the country. Additional security costs will have to be met by individual teams.

Terrorists have never succeeded in attacking the World Cup. Last month Interpol, the global police organization, said it will mount its largest-ever operation at this year’s tournament. The South African government will have 44,000 dedicated police officers patrolling the event.

They were at Heinz Field Saturday night as part of a wedding party. I do think it is odd they were in there though. They said they wanted to take pictures on the field....sounds like BS. What kind of pictures could you get on the field in the dark?

You know what, this actually seems like it could be fairly benign. I can see getting all wasted at a wedding and then saying "Hey, let's go down to Heinz Field and take some pictures of us on the 50-yard line".

Still needs to be investigated fully, but, yeah, I can see it happening.

Sounds fishy and stupid to me. If I'm from a country that has Americans feeling uneasy about my country I, would sure give them no reason to be alarmed or have them arrest me.

My first thoughts too were, " too darn old for these kind of pranks." If they were sober, even more reason to be suspect of them. Probably just casing the joint to see how easy it was to get into or to see how difficult. Could also be a smoke screen for another place in or out of the city. Let the police and FBi concentrate on Heinz field and then attack some other place. Could also be a ploy to see our tax dollars get used up and to deplete our security funds.

In any event. these guys were up to no good in my opinion and giving them a mere 5000 bond was really stupid. Arians isn't a judge too is he ?

No, not dumb. You let them go on a low bail to insure they get released, and you notify the Feds and they track the hell out of them until they find no ties to terrorism, or they track them back to the head of the snake. Pretty simple concept.

Nah, it's no more racist than if you were concerned that if their last name was Kane, you be worried what white supremacist cop killers were doing breaking into Heinz Field.

Cop Killers in Arkansas Tied to Patriot Movement

The two men accused of shooting dead a pair of police officers in Arkansas last week have been tied to the far-right-wing Patriot movement. Police say Jerry Ralph Kane and his sixteen-year-old son Joseph shot dead the officers on Thursday. The two Kanes were later killed in a firefight with other law enforcement officials. Authorities say the elder Kane had been involved since at least 2002 in the Patriot or sovereign citizen movement that believe the government has no legitimate authority. The car Jerry Kane was driving was registered to property that is owned by an aging white supremacist.

Two plead to reduced charges in Heinz Field incident

Thursday, May 27, 2010
By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Two men pleaded guilty this morning to reduced charges in their attempt to break into Heinz Field Sunday, but a third suspect had his preliminary hearing postponed in Municipal Court.

Shazad Hosi Mehta, 28, of Elmhurst, Ill., and Neville Noshir Medhora, 27, of Austin, Texas, had been charged, along with Adil A. Minocherhomjee, 22, of LaJolla, Calif., with criminal trespass and criminal conspiracy.

District Judge James Motznik today granted motions to reduce the charges to simple trespass and a summary count of disorderly conduct.

The two men were ordered to pay court costs and fines, and they were released.

A preliminary hearing for Mr. Minocherhomjee has been postponed to 8 a.m. June 30 in Municipal Court.

They were arrested after they scaled a fence at Gate B to enter Heinz Field around 7 a.m. When their attempt failed, the men moved to Gate A, climbed over each other like a ladder, and two of them gained entrance to the stadium. Mr. Minocherhomjee remained outside the gate.

The three had attended a wedding the day before at Heinz Field. They said they are Steelers fans, and they wanted to take pictures there before returning to their respective cities.

The FBI interviewed the men and it appears investigators have dismissed any fears the three are terrorists.

No damage or vandalism was reported in the wake of the break-in, police said.

Two things I want to say about that:

1) Hey, I'm farther away than Austin (by about an hour)!!
2) His first name is really "Neville"?
