Why are you allowing a troll to take over this forum?

RuthlessBurgher
05-03-2010, 01:52 PM
If you notice any instances of anyone breaking the rules that have been established in our Code of Conduct, feel free to report it.

At this point, I have not noticed any behaviors which violate the terms of the Code of Conduct myself...other than the occassional banning of spammers who try to use our subforums to try to sell their crap...so there are no actions to be taken that I am aware of (although I've been away from the board this weekend...the weather in the Northeast has been too nice...so the vast majority of the first page of this board has new unread messages that I haven't seen yet).

See, I understand the mods issues with this sort of thing. The guy is obviously here to troll. His posts are merely for his entertainment and not ours. But, he hasn't broken any rules. When you don't have specific rules for banning criteria you have people making subjective calls. When I was a mod here that didn't go over so well...people complained about that as well. You can't have it both ways. You either have a situation where members feel others are being banned inappropriately or are allowed to stay despite their trolling.

I haven't read all of his posts... but it is clear his intent is to stir the pot. His screen name indicates as much.

Some people get bent out of shape just because others don't see their views.

I think that is what makes the message board enjoyable. If we all agreed - then we could wrap it up with a quick...

"well that was easy. I guess will solve world hunger next..."

and be done with it-

Don't let him. Just skip over his posts. He is just looking for people to respond to him and even have threads started about him like this one. I would suggest the mods remove this thread. If we ignore him he will go away.

i'm a big believer in the "greater good" theory...why should one troll be allowed to ruin it for everybody else?

Because we don't make the rules here. When I was a mod...I was given the ability to ban based on what I believed to be the greater good of the board...ie people who had proven themselves to troll at the Trib, people who made habits of attacking other posters, those here who were only here to create an air of discontent etc.

The problem? You had one guy...me...making those decisions as John was more involved in the tech side. They were based on my judgement. Members were not included in those decisions. Therefore, when someone was banned...they had no way of appealing that decision. Some felt that certain members were banned unfairly and those members were not given a voice. No matter how I seen it...I think they were right.

I think these kinds of forums work best when you have specific rules for banning...but I would include one...where if a member receives 5 nominations for banning it goes before the community for a vote...infractions listed...and the member given a voice to defend himself. This gives you the greater good that you speak about.

Since that doesn't exist...I use the friend or foe function. If I don't want to read a trolls comments I don't have to.

And for the record, I think the mods here do a terrific job of moderating, keeping the forum organized, and having an even hand. I have no issues with how this place is run.

I searched and I saw quite a few posts on the "Who do you want to see at QB in week 1? Dixon or Leftwich?" topic that involved HeHateMe.

With that being said, I didn't see anything in that thread that warrants an immediate ban. I did see something that *could* be viewed as crossing a fine line but I will take note of that.

I am an 80/20-rule type guy but I won't ban someone for having a different view. If its a troll, yes that warrants banning. Spammers won't be tolerated and will be immediately banned.

I think it's very clear that HeHateMe has a thing against Roethlisberger. I agreed with some of his assessments but I disgreed with many, many others. For those that recall, LasVegasGuy was the same with Mike Tomlin but often crossed the line which essentially got him banned which is unfortunate because he was knowledgable. Heck, I'm starting to get very impatient with Arians, Colbert, and even Mike Tomlin but thats more another thread...

For the record, I've had strong disagreements with members of the board and I could get into the same argumental discussions because I don't see eye-to-eye with some. But that's what makes it a forum/discussion board. I have decided to let it go, walk away and/or ignore the posts if I think it would turn into a personal or "shouting-type" match. I would suggest the same approach for others rather than taking things personally or getting emotional about someones perspective.

I can tell just by HeHateMe's posts that he/she is knowledgable about football and especially the Steelers. I wouldn't necessarily call him/her a troll. I would like it to be a bit toned down and post for discussion rather than argumental-type posts. Thats where the improvement needs to be made.

I think the mods do a phenominal jobs here and they are great contributors to the discussions and are well respected. I don't appreciate when people try to "call out" the mods or threaten an action if something isn't addressed. I have seen that in the past and it bothers me personally because I know how much time and effort the mods, myself and other members put in to this board. A simply notification/PM or "Report" action is enough to get something on the mods radar. We will continue to monitor the board and coordinate with each other to address situations as they arise.

Thanks,

John

I do some of my work in public places. I like to read Planet Steelers there at times. Whether the girls are naked, or in negligee poses, or in a dripping wet bikini doesn't matter - these images are not suitable for my workplaces at least. So it makes it a real drag.

I tried costanza2k1's suggestion - works great! But only if you do all your work on one computer, and if people don't replace their girl pics with new ones now and then.

But if you're checking out Planet Steelers from different public computers all the time, or if the IT department periodically cleans out and refreshes the place where commands like "block pics from this site" are stored, or if the computer doesn't have firefox ... etc. etc. ... well, I'm back in the position of all of a sudden having inappropriate pics come up at work.

Could do SMG's suggestion of blocking all pics - but to be honest, that is getting pretty close to too much of a hassle for every time I want to pop in for a real quick look at the site. And besides, that would mean missing out on the sig pics of a lot of forum members (pap, ruth, others) - and as has been pointed out, these really ARE a major cool thing about this forum.

I've got nothing against girl pics per se, it's just that the location here on Planet Steelers makes it risky to read this at work sometimes. You guys that post the girl pics - knowing that it makes it hard for some of us to read the forum (work, home with wife and kids looking over the shoulder, etc.) - would you consider not posting stuff that would possibly get a fair amount of us "in trouble"?

Just my :2c

Thanks -

Nice!

I'm inventing a new digital Forum Ban-O-Meter. It scans user's posts and puts out a "Value of Banning" number between 1 and 100. The user can set the red line wherever desired. Results can be enhanced by purchasing the Context Analyzer plug-in for only $50.

So far the prototype is outputting anywhere between 80-85 depending. With the Context Analyzer the output is consistently over 90.
