yup, he was slow... and i knew that already.. but, as a UDFA, what have you got to lose... he's a run stuffer by nature... if it doesn't work, so be it. you didn't waste a draft pick on him.

Draft Diamond: Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith, UTEP

UTEP safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith is a physical player, one who likes to hit you and would rather take on contact than avoid it.

“I like to be physical. I like to play in the box and I don’t worry about taking on pulling offensive linemen,” said Cromartie-Smith. “I like to read the play and then attack it, kind of like safety Adrian Wilson (of the Arizona Cardinals).”

Cromartie-Smith, as a junior, was second on the team in tackles with 77. He also had two tackles for losses, a sack, and a pair of interceptions. This past season he led the team with 108 total tackles and had four tackles for loss and an interception.

Even with a productive college career, Cromartie-Smith knows he can get better.

“I have been training and working to be more flexible…being able to flip my hips and change directions better,” he said. “I also know I need to work on my ball skills to become a better all-around player.”

Cromartie-Smith did something rare in these days of getting ready for pro days and the NFL Combine; he trained at UTEP by himself and had some great results at his pro day. He was 6’11/2”, 206 pounds, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.46 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.47 seconds, and the three-cone drill in 7.24 seconds. He measured a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9’9” broad jump and did 20 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds.

“I just trained at school because I wanted to finish my degree. That was important to me,” said Cromartie-Smith. “I did lift with a friend and mainly I wanted to work on the 40-yard dash and the bench press.”

There were many who questioned whether Cromartie-Smith belonged at the next level as he headed into the Texas vs. the Nation Game. Those questions were quickly answered.

“I wanted to see how I would do against a higher level of competition, and at the Texas vs. the Nation Game, it gave me the ability to check that out,” said Cromartie-Smith. “After being there with all the guys, I knew I could play at next level and it made me push myself even harder.”

Cromartie-Smith can play at the next level where he will be taking on contact rather than avoiding it.

offical list from steeler website

The seven undrafted rookies include offensive guard Dorian Brooks, safety Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, offensive tackle Kyle Jolly, fullback Demetrius Taylor, defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson, safety Justin Thornton and center/guard A.J. Trump. The addition of the 17 rookies gives the Steelers a total of 89 players on their offseason roster.

I looked at his cone times and pretty impressive for a guy his size. He was a star RB & LB in high school so the FB transition will be easy. Struggled in coverage at VT and moved from LB to DE. Went to DT because of injuries on the team. Might be a gem...Who knows. Looks like a "Kleco" experiment the Eagles had. I attached an article.

The "official" URFA list
As happens every year, the list of undrafted rookie free agents is in flux until the teams actually get their names on a contract, signed, sealed and delivered.

This year was no different for the Steelers.

Here is this year's official list:

Fullback Detemetrius Taylor (6-0, 273) of Virginia Tech, guard Dorrian Brooks (6-2, 306) of James Madison, safeties Justin Thornton (6-1, 213) of Kansas and Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith (6-2, 210) of UTEP, offensive tackle Kyle Jolly (6-6, 300) of North Carolina, defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson (6-2, 301) of Virginia Tech and center/guard A.J. Trump (6-3, 300) of Miami.

It will be interesting to see. A 275 lb FB that head hunts like a LB. There might be a few guys he hits that blow snot bubbles while they are on their back. I saw where another Steelers forum was saying this was a typo. I will lean toward the "transition to FB" theory until I see something else. It makes sense given his athleticism, high school position, and the fact he is 5'11" and struggles in coverage. Looks like his only option at the next level. If moving to FB is true & given his high school position...Might make a hell of a short yardage back too.

Slapstick

Fullback Detemetrius Taylor (6-0, 273) of Virginia Tech, guard Dorrian Brooks (6-2, 306) of James Madison, safeties Justin Thornton (6-1, 213) of Kansas and Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith (6-2, 210) of UTEP, offensive tackle Kyle Jolly (6-6, 300) of North Carolina, defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson (6-2, 301) of Virginia Tech and center/guard A.J. Trump (6-3, 300) of Miami.

Early reports were the following:
Damon Cromartie-Smith, S, UTEP
AJ Trump, OT, Miami
Cordarrow Thompson, DE, Virginia Tech
Andre Dixon, RB, UConn
Dorian Brooks, OL, James Madison
Ciron Black, OT - LSU
Lindsey Witten, DE, Connecticut
Darryl Clark, QB, Penn State

Now half of those guys (Dixon, Black, Witten, and Clark) are not on the final list? :wft

Where do the early lists come from???
That's what we get for relying on a New England Patriot website for accurate information.

Those sites should have better intel than any of them. They have cameras everywhere, right?

Steelers undrafted free agents
Posted by Josh Alper on April 25, 2010 2:57 PM ET
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/20 ... ee-agents/ (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/25/steelers-undrafted-free-agents/)

Steelers second-round pick Jason Worilds will be familiar with at least one of his new teammates when he reports for work.

The team signed defensive end Cordarrow Thompson as an undrafted free agent, giving them two members of Virginia Tech's defense. Thompson started all 13 games for the Hokies in 2009, finishing with 25 tackles and a half-sack.

The Steelers also signed a player from Connecticut. Defensive end Lindsey Witten join three offensive linemen -- A.J. Trump of Miami, Dorian Brooks of James Madison and Ciron Black of LSU -- and UTEP safety Damon Cromartie-Smith as the team's undrafted signees.

Steelers add 8 rookies
Monday, April 26, 2010
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10116/1053502-100.stm

The Steelers added a huge fullback and two safeties to their roster today when they signed seven rookies who were not chosen in last week's draft.

Detemetrius Taylor of Virginia Tech becomes the team's only pure fullback, nearly the size of an offensive lineman at 6 feet, 273 pounds.

The other free agent rookies are guard Dorrian Brooks (6-2, 306) of James Madison, safeties Justin Thornton (6-1, 213) of Kansas and Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith (6-2, 210) of UTEP, offensive tackle Kyle Jolly (6-6, 300) of North Carolina, defensive tackle Cordarrow Thompson (6-2, 301) of Virginia Tech, defensive end Lindsey Witten (6-4 1/2, 249) of Connecticut and center/guard A.J. Trump (6-3, 300) of Miami.

Added to their 10 draft choices, it leaves the Steelers with 90 players on their roster.

Pappy, WE GOT HIM!! Another OLB!!

Anyways, Pappy will be Happy!! Witten had 11.5 sacks for UCONN last year, so he can't be all bad. Maybe we can use him on STs! I've heard he can long snap...

The steelers wiki still has them all listed. LOL

I guess some guys would not sign with us? So we picked others?

I read a report that Blount did not sign with the 49's and is going to the titans.

On Steelers Fever site, I just read that Ciron Black has NOT signed with the Steelers, per his agent. He is also not on the official list of signees released by the team.

As much as it would be a coup to grab a talent like Ciron Black as an UDFA, Chadman can't see how he makes the team at this point. If anything- it would be overkill at OG.

Andre Dixon not signing is disappointing though- he was a sneaky chance, in Chadman's opinion. This probably is good news for Frank The Tank however.

Wootton looks like a good player- had a Round 3-4 grade on CBS...but another OLB?? Practice Squad sounds about right for now.

Taco Thompson looks bigger than 301lbs on film....is that a misprint somewhere? Going on his film, he is a sneaky chance too. Still...he went UDFA for a reason...so it's hope more than expectation.

Not Wootton...Witten.

Corey Wootten (DE from Northwestern) was drafted by the Bears in round 4.

Lindsey Witten (DE from Connecticut) was signed by us as a UDFA.

If we got Wootton (6'6" 270 lbs.) he could likely gain weight and become a 3-4 DE for us (Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel were roughly the same size coming out of college).

But Witten (6'5" 250 lbs.) projects more like a OLB in the 3-4. No real room for him do may the team after drafting Worilds and Gibson, but could be an interesting guy to develop on the practice squad if he shows promise.

Mike Sellers, who is of similar size, was a LB in college and moved to FB in the CFL before signing with the Redskins...

I would take a dude like that on my team...

Mike Sellers was a h3ll of an athlete too, I ran into him at the mall down here once and he was just a monster of a person and looked to have zero body fat. It was scary.

Per songwhale the Steelers have signed a ninth UDFA; C Bradley Vierling 6'3" 296 from Vanderbilt

That's weird...a couple of months ago, there was a student in one of my classes who was a big sports fan (he was a Philly guy, and I remember talking with him about Westbrook's release back then). Anyway, in one of our back-and-forth e-mails about various sports-related topics, I remember him saying that his buddy Bradley was the center for Vanderbilt and that he was working out all spring in the hopes of getting drafted. He just mentioned it in passing, but it stuck in the back of my mind for whatever reason. Now I'll have to go through those old e-mails when I go home later and find the kid's address so I can let him know that his friend is now a Steeler!

Here's an article I found about the guy:

Vanderbilt center Bradley Vierling to sign with Steelers
By Jeff Lockridge • THE TENNESSEAN • April 26, 2010

Former Vanderbilt center and 2009 team captain Bradley Vierling will sign a free-agent football contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday morning.

Vierling said that a deal was agreed upon this afternoon that will keep the Warminster, Pa., native in his home state.

“I’m headed to Pittsburgh and I’m going to be a Steeler,” Vierling said.

Pittsburgh was not the only team interested in Vierling, but it was the one willing to offer a contract. The Browns, Lions, Rams and Jaguars extended Vierling a tryout at mini-camp.

“It was actually a pretty easy decision,” he said. “Obviously, you have to go with where the contract is at because of insurance issues.

“(Pittsburgh) said they went back in the film room after the draft and watched more film on me against first-round draft pick Dan Williams (of the Tennessee Vols, who was drafted 26th overall by the Arizona Cardinals). They thought I did an exceptional job against him. They said they had underestimated me and wanted me to become a Steeler.”

Vierling (6-3, 295) started his final 25 games at center for Vanderbilt. The Steelers also liked his versatility of having logged some experience at guard.

Vierling is the second known Commodore to receive a free-agent contract. Free safety Ryan Hamilton signed with defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Defensive end Steven Stone has a workout scheduled with the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. Defensive end Broderick Stewart reportedly will work out with the New York Jets.

Vanderbilt had a pair of players taken in the 2010 NFL Draft: cornerback Myron Lewis (Buccaneers, third round) and offensive tackle Thomas Welch (Patriots, seventh round).

Now, said Vierling, comes the hard part – and the fun part – of making an NFL roster.

“Pretty much anybody drafted in the fourth round or higher, including free-agent contracts, you have to earn your spot,” Vierling said. “Nothing is guaranteed now in the NFL. Before, if you signed a contract, you used to be good all the way up until camp and through camp. Now you have to earn your spot and keep it.”

This is the latest I could find. Looks like he is still unsigned. Kinda dumb, considering mini-camps start tomorrow.

LSU football: Offensive lineman Ciron Black still unsigned

LSU offensive tackle Ciron Black has not signed a free agent contract with any NFL team, his agent Jimmy Sexton said Monday.

Internet reports, including one on Nola.com, had Black as one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' free agent signings but his name was not on the list the Steelers released on Monday.

Black, who started four years and a school record 53 games for the Tigers, was expected to be one of several LSU players drafted but his name was not called during the three-day draft.

"He has not," Sexton said when reached by phone Monday. Sexton declined to give further information.

Eight other undrafted LSU players were signed to free agent deals, including Harry Coleman who went to the Saints.

You would think he would want to get into a camp but in the end he is likely to get mid-round or better money as a UDFA.
