Walterfootball has Worilds rated as their 5th best 3-4 rush linebacker.
Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech
Height: 6-1. Weight: 254.
Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
Combine 40 Time: 4.61.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.47.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 38.
Projected Round (2010): 2-3.
3/18/10: Unless Jason Worilds was running a 35-yard dash, his 4.47 at his Pro Day was very impressive. There's a very good chance he'll be a Day 2 pick.
3/2/10: Jason Worilds didn't have a good 2009 campaign, but managed to strengthen his NFL Draft stock at the Combine. Worilds ran a 4.70, benched 24 reps and notched a 38-inch vertical.
1/8/10: Jason Worilds has declared for the 2010 NFL Draft. Worilds is coming off a poor season, but told the media that he expects to be drafted in the first round. This has a chance of happening until Worilds wakes up.
11/15/09: Disappointed in 2009; has just seven TFL and 3.5 sacks as a junior.
2/12/09: Despite playing with shoulder injuries, Jason Worilds garnered 18.5 TFL and eight sacks, earning himself a spot on the All-ACC Second Team.
The x factor is why his production fell off by half this past season... the FO must see some reasoning as to why...
As I asked in another thread, do we have any Va Tech backers who can give some personal insight on the kid?

Are they really taking depth in Rd. 2? Will he just sit on the bench for the next three years? Harrison will move inside?

From draftcountdown.com:
Defensive End | Virginia Tech | JR Jason Worilds
Height: 6-1¼ | Weight: 254 | 40-Time: 4.72
Strengths:
Super Athletic --- Explosive with good speed and a burst --- Very quick and agile --- Active with an excellent motor --- Does a fantastic job in pursuit --- Good strength and power --- Uses hands well --- Plays with proper leverage--- Reliable Tackler --- Comfortable in space --- Smooth dropping in coverage --- Tough --- Feisty --- Versatile --- Hard Worker.
Weaknesses:
Lacks the ideal size that you look for --- Questionable instincts and awareness --- Is not stout at the point of attack against the run --- Is often late off the snap --- Repertoire of pass rush moves is limited --- A ' Tweener who may have to change positions --- Durability is a concern.
Notes:
Was a two-year starter for the Hokies --- Went by "Jason Adjepong" before legally changing his last name in 2007 --- Named 2nd Team All-ACC in 2008 and 2009 --- Has a long history of shoulder injuries which have required multiple surgeries --- Didn't have the huge season most expected in 2009 but was playing through a painful shoulder injury --- Played defensive end in college but could also project to outside linebacker at the next level --- Best fit might come in a 3-4 scheme -- Physical tools and style are eerily reminiscent of Darryl Tapp.

I just feel really down right now. I don't know much about the kid but maybe they think he'll be another Demervil (sp?) from the Broncos. Or will they put him in the middle. Is Tomlin showing an affinity for linebackers. Reminds me of the guy from UCLA that we reached for in the third. I hope he's a diamond in the rough.

Harrison is 32 years old this May. We need another OLB. Worlids is a strong dude with good athleticism, much stouter than Bruce Davis. I don't mind the pick.

Yeah, when you got two OLB's who have been to the Pro Bowl in the past three years (three even, if Peezy made it his last year), why such the emphasis on drafting another one? $hit... did William Gay get 50x better in the off-season? Cuz otherwise, I don't care how many passrushers we collect; just f-n throw it on him and it's a sure reception.

Well who do we have at OLB if Harrison or Woodley gets injured? Keyaron or Andre Frazier? Worilds will be Harrison's replacement and depth in the meantime.

I don't hate the position. I made the same point about nobody behind Harrison and Woodley (only choice is to move Timmons outside), and even suggested trading up in the second to get Jerry Hughes (until Indy took him in the first).
I just think the player was a reach. Then again, the team knows more about this than I do, for sure. I hope they are right.

Me too. The two books I get (Kiper and PFW's) both talk about his mysterious drop-off in production. Seems to me that if they actually watch, and this guy was always in the QB's face, they'd have said that.
I also can appreciate the pick. I like un-obvious picks... not the ones where a guy is "falling": e.g. Limas Sweed, Claussen this year. Those guys seem to fall for a reason.

I like the pick. I believe the decline in effectiveness in our defense in the 4th quarter (5 blown leads) in the 4th quarter stems at least in part from the fact that we have absolutely NOBODY to spell Harrison and Woodley. In the past, we haven't needed thatas much because our power run offense tended to possess the ball and effectively shorten games. Now that we're chucking it around ourselves, our D is on the field more... by the 4th quarter, when the game shifts to fling it every down catch up mode, our pass rushers are gassed. Since our D depends on pressure to break up the timing of opposing passing games, our secondary gets exposed.
Add to that the fact that we drafted a pair of corners last year, one of whom (3rd rounder Keenan Lewis) was dinged up and relatively ineffective from camp on, and the fact that there was really no particular value sitting on the board at the position at 52, and we end up with Jason Worilds because he IS the best option for helping the 4th quarter pass D available at 2:52.

Maybe they're going to re-arrange all the linebackers so the Timmons pick at number one now , looks good ? Maybe this guy will only sit the bench for four years before we find out he is average ?

I hate drafting guys with questionable production. Just because he has good workouts doesn't mean he can play at the NFL level. I have major problems with Worilds in the 2nd round. I actually like Sanders in the 3rd round. Mayock really praised the guy. I watched Sanders play a couple of times and he seems like a good slot receiver.
My guess is that Sanders will be a productive player and Worilds will follow Bruce Davis (who actually was productive in college).

He makes an occasional play and holds the point of attack versus a double team once or twice, but other than that he gets blocked or takes himself out of the play. It's not real pretty; I kept waiting for a big play, but never really saw one.

My God, the gloom and doom.
1. Worilds was thought to be a second round pick by many for months now. He was in Mayock's best available when we selected him.
2. I've seen the kid play. He has tremendous edge speed but poor technique and runs himself out of the play too often. He needs to develop or use more functional strength to take on blockers at the POA. But, he has great potential as a pass rusher and should be able to relieve Wood and Harrison this season when necessary.
3. We should have taken a corner with the 2nd or 3rd round picks but there still are some good corners left. Hopefully one will fall to us in the 4th. A healthy Keenan Lewis may be able to compete for a job as well.
4. Lots of draft experts love Sanders. He was a late riser so a lot of folks who don't really pay attention to college football until after the games are played didn't hear much about him. He'll make the team even if Sweed plays lights out. Having six capable WRs going into camp is a GOOD thing. There is a good chance one will be injured. If not, we may have to trade someone.
I don't love any of these picks. I would have picked differently at each one. But, that is life.

Overview
Throughout Frank Beamer's tenure at Virginia Tech, the Hokies have been known for special teams, mobile quarterbacks and undersized pass rushers. Worilds follows in the tradition of Cornell Brown, Nathan Adibi and Daryl Tapp -- college defensive ends whose lack of size has made them 'tweeners in the NFL.
Worilds impressed coaches enough to see the field on defense and special teams as a true freshman before season-ending shoulder surgery forced the team to redshirt him.
He would contributee 17 tackles as a backup in 2007 but broke out in 2008, when he racked up 62 tackles, including 18.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks in earning second-team all-ACC honors.
The focus of every offense's blocking scheme, Worilds was unable to match his 2008 production, posting 49 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss and 4 sacks as a junior. Despite the drop in production, he elected to leave Virginia Tech early for the NFL.
Worilds lacks the bulk to be a full-time defensive end in the pros but could be -- much like Daryl Tapp with the Seahawks -- a serviceable pass-rush specialist. If he can prove his trademark hustle and the agility he's flashed in pursuit for the Hokies translates well in linebacker drills, he might be a candidate to convert to the rush linebacker position in the 3-4 defense.
Analysis
Pass rush: His specialty. Gets a good jump off the snap and is fast enough to blow past the offensive tackle to force the quarterback to step up into the pocket. Good use of hands. Quick, active hands to slap away the initial punch and shows a variety of pass rush techniques, including a swim, rip, spin and surprisingly effective club. Stronger than he looks. Good hand placement and overall strength for the occasional bull rush. Good bend to get out and under the tackle's reach. Shows a burst to close when opportunities present themselves. Good secondary moves when his initial rush attempt is handled.
Run defense: Good strength, but simply lacks the bulk to hold up at the point of attack consistently. Many of his tackles in the running game come 2-3 yards off the line, as he's active enough to fight off blocks and make the play -- but only after being pushed back initially when plays are run directly at him. Good agility to beat the tackle/tight end outside in an attempt at keeping contain. Good effort to string the play out wide. Good effort in pursuit.
Explosion: Has an explosive first step off the snap to consistently pressure the tackle's outside shoulder. Is stronger than he looks and can surprise much bigger blockers with an explosive pop as a bull-rusher. Brings his hips as a tackler and supplies a pop to the ball-carrier.
Strength: Has a natural leverage advantage and plays with good overall strength, especially in his upper body. Has the strength to surprise as a bull rusher, but is too often pushed back, himself, while trying to anchor.
Tackling: Appears to have the body control to consider making the transition to outside linebacker. Bends at the knees to break down and make the tackle on the edge against elusive athletes. Generally is a solid wrap-up tackler. Brings his hips to deliver a solid blow. Can knock the ball free. Has 3 forced fumbles in two starting seasons …
Intangibles: High effort player. Saw action on multiple special teams units throughout his career, including punt return/block team and the extra point and field goal block unit. A hard worker in the weight room. Earned the Excalibur Award during the 2008 offseason, the top honor in the strength and conditioning program. Last name is pronounced "Worlds."
Career Notes
A potentially dynamic football player … Can rush the passer, stop the run and block kicks … Will be ready to go again in August after undergoing shoulder surgery in January and sitting out spring practice … Really came into his own as the 2008 season progressed … Rapidly established himself as one of the ACC's top defensive playmakers … Led Tech's linemen in tackles with 62 … His 18.5 tackles for loss led the team, ranked second in the ACC and tied for 17th nationally … Stood fourth in the conference in sacks with eight … During his last six games, he had 12 TFL for minus-74 yards … Posted a sack in six consecutive games and was in on at least one tackle for loss in 11 straight outings … Had 21 QB hurries … A 2008 second-team All-ACC selection … Has a combination of outstanding speed and strength … A defensive playmaker who fills an extremely important role for the Hokies.

I guess I was right LeBeau has lost it because the board experts have deemed his assessment or Worilds to be false. Butler obviously doesn't know anything either. Let's hope he is not the heir apparent for defensive coordinator.
