Goodell Plans to Meet With Roethlisberger
Goodell planning to meet with Roethlisberger about QB's off-field problems

By BARRY WILNER AP Football Writer
ORLANDO, Fla. March 22, 2010 (AP) The Associated Press

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says he plans to meet with Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger about the star's off-field problems.

Goodell already has spoken with team owners about Roethlisberger, who is accused of assaulting a 20-year-old college student in a Georgia nightclub on March 5. Roethlisberger's attorney says the quarterback committed no crime.

Goodell says the league "takes this issue very seriously," and that he is "concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position."

Roethlisberger also is being sued by a woman who claims he raped her in 2008 at a Lake Tahoe hotel. He denies those allegations and has asked for counter-damages.

Goodell addresses latest Roethlisberger case
Posted by Mike Florio on March 22, 2010 1:57 PM ET

In his first public comments regarding the sexual assault allegations made against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that he'll be meeting with Roethlisberger "at the appropriate time."

Goodell prefaced this remark with an ominous comment regarding the overall situation: "The most important thing is we take the issue seriously. We are concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position."

In other words, regardless of whether Roethlisberger is charged, the fact that he now has been twice accused of sexual assault has gotten the league's attention.

It makes sense. Goodell addressed the problem of repeat allegations in January 2009, prior to Super Bowl XLIII. "You can have false accusations once, maybe twice," Goodell said in reference to former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress. "When you start getting to multiple [arrests], you're putting yourself in the wrong position, you're making the wrong decisions in the wrong places. At that point in time, you're reflecting poorly on the NFL itself, your teammates."

So, basically, Roethlisberger is running out of chances. And one more accusation -- true or false -- could be enough to dramatically impact his career in a negative way.

Goodell plans to meet with Roethlisberger
Steelers quarterback has been accused of sexual assault

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In the wake of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger being accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia woman, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants to meet with the NFL star.

In a stern tone of voice, Goodell made it abundantly clear how he feels about Roethlisberger being under investigation for another alleged sex crime.

"The most important thing is we take the issue very seriously," Goodell said today at the NFL annual meetings. "We are concerned that Ben continues to put himself in this position. I have spoken to the Steelers and Art Rooney directly about it. At the appropriate time, I will be meeting with Ben."

Goodell's concerns are shared by the Steelers organization.

According to league sources, the Steelers are deeply worried and annoyed by this latest issue surrounding Roethlisberger.

And Steelers coach Mike Tomlin made that point during an interview Saturday with NFL Network.

"I'm highly concerned for our franchise and for Ben personally," Tomlin said. "My concerns are many, but I think at this time it's kind of appropriate to watch these things and let these things run their course," Tomlin said. "I think it would be inappropriate for me to have strong feelings one way or another with the investigation being ongoing and so forth. Like everyone else, you watch these things unfold."

Police are investigating whether Roethlisberger assaulted a 20-year-old woman in Milledgeville, Ga.

No charges have been filed against him and his lawyer has denied the woman's accusations.

Meanwhile, Roethlisberger is also facing a civil lawsuit in Nevada regarding an alleged sexual assault from two years ago. A VIP hostess at a Lake Tahoe resort accused Roethlisberger of assaulting her after having her come to his room to fix his television.

Here's to hoping Ben sobers up a bit. His margin of error is pretty much down to zero. The target on his back right now is pretty big.

On another note, is it just me or does Goodell's comment regarding Ben's "putting himself in these positions" seem to project that Goodell thinks Ben is innocent?

Goodell doesn't give 2 sh#ts if Ben is guilty or not... Ben has already screwed his image up.

To me that statement says Goodell realizes Ben is just as dumb as PacMan Jones off the field.

I wouldn't go that far. Ben does not equal PacMan "making it rain" Jones.

Agreed Ben needs to make better decisions. If I were Ben I would ONLY date women with money and fame. Women with something to lose. If he chooses to have sex with a bar girl...he better make her sign a waver and video tape the entire night with her permission.

You guys are taking pride in your ignorance.

Both Ben and Pacman have had multiple off field problems...
Both are perceived "repeat" offenders in the eyes of Goodell...

I never said Ben had the same infractions as PacMan...
It's a little scary how juvenile people get when talking about this...

Goodell is MEETING with Ben because he keeps getting in trouble over the SAME PROBLEM... grow up and realize he is now viewed as a PacMan/Bungle/repeat offender who needs a "talking to by the commissioner"

Ignorance...lol. Pot meet kettle.

If you don't see a difference between PacMan Jones and Ben then I don't know what to say. If you don't see how Goodell will see it differently then I don't know what to say.

These multiple "infractions" you speak about...

1) Woman who bragged to friends about wanting to have Ben's baby...goes to his hotel room has sex with him then cries foul. He has been cleared of all charges.

2) And an open case where we have very little knowledge of the situation.

Is Ben a dumb acs? Well I would say no for the first...and yes for the second. At this point, I would say he was guilty of one jack acs move.

PacMan Jones...lol come one how many times has this cat had brushes with the law? Jones is a thug in the true sense of the word. Lets go over his rap sheet shall we?

July 2005: A nightclub altercation leads to an arrest for assault and felony vandalism charges.
September 2005: Asked to wait in line for his vehicle from valet parking after the annual Nashville Sports Council Kickoff luncheon, Jones threw a loud tantrum and had to be talked to by the police.
October 2005: After a petition filed by the State of West Virginia claimed that Pacman had not seen his probation officer enough, his probation period is extended by 90 days.
August 2006: In another nightclub episode, he gets busted for disorderly conduct and public intoxication after claiming a woman swiped his wallet. According to her, not only did she not steal anything, but Jones spat on her. Police ordered him to leave multiple times, but he refused and continued to loudly swear at the woman. He gets six months probation with the following conditions: stay out of trouble and stay away from the nightclub. Stay away from nightclubs? Man, thatís like asking the U.S. to stop meddling in international affairs.
October 2006: Another nightclub altercation, another episode where Jones allegedly spat in the face of a woman. He gets cited for misdemeanor assault and the Titans finally take action, suspending him for one game.
February 2007: The famous NBA All-Star weekend episode that involves a strip club and an exotic dancer. Enraged that once of the dancers Ď without his permission ó dared pick up money he threw on stage, Jones allegedly grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head on the stage. Thatís when Cudworth apparently got involved, and all hell broke loose. Shots were fired and three people were hit. Next month, Jones is due back in Las Vegas to face criminal charges for this episode. He could face up to 12 years in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted.
May 2007: Less than a month after his NFL-imposed suspension, Jones was caught speeding in a car that had been involved in a drug bust in 2006.
June 2007: Jones was sought for police questioning after an Atlanta strip joint shooting that allegedly involved some of his posse. Pacman avoided charges on this episode.

Yeah...that's pretty close there Dizz. I know you are looking for the "good ole boy club" underneath every rock. But, sometimes you just have to call a thug a thug and believe me Jones got his chances. The level of Ben's stupidy and Jones's stupidity are not even on the same planet.

People have/had much higher expectations of Ben then they did of PacMan...
For Ben to try to get a quickie in a bar bathroom after last years headlines is a PacMan move.

I have no idea what "good ole boy club" you speak of... All I'm saying is the Goodell statement of Ben getting caught in the same predicament says volumes...

Goodell is going to meet with Ben... if you don't see the obvious that's on you. Ben is in the news, Ben has Ray Ray's lawyer... but for some reason Ben is "better" then the other thugs?

LOL!!! Ben is a thug too... Shawn.

Ben and Pacman are "the same" only the in the sense of multiple allegations. The allegations are different. The implications are different. Pac Man is pretty much on video. Ben has been ALLEGED to be guilty. The truth of the matter is that in both cases with Ben, both sides (Ben's and the accuser's) claims fall within the bounds of "reasonable scenario."

The McNulty situation looks like a clear case of trying to cash in on an indiscretion. My guess is that this one is not far from that. The problem is that Ben is stumbling through life metaphorically drunk and not paying attention to the signs of the times around him. Hopefully this is at least a wake up call to which he responds.

I may not get along with everyone on here and I may criticize Ben more then Arians but I don't bring up race or throw jabs at a person over race. It's not cool to rehash Trib drama, it was shut down for a reason.

I bring it up because it was brought up. Feltwig or whatever his name stated it was refreshing to see a white boy brought up on charges. That wasn't on the Trib. And people rarely change their views on these matters. You stated what you stated and that's fine. I get ya.

As for my life sucking...well I'm not sure where you get that. But, if that makes you sleep better terrific. Do I have hang ups about race? It depends what you mean by that. I don't suffer from white guilt I can say that for sure. Have I ever judged someone based on appearance? Yes. Has that ever included the color of their skin? I'm sure. But, I do my best not to do so. I do my very best to interact with people as people. Am I perfect? Surely not.

What I will say is this...I hope you have changed. I sincerely hope race isn't the reason you have been riding Ben harder than anyone here. I hope it's not the reason you are so willing to compare him to Jones and willing to declare him guilty before a trial. The reason this bothers me isn't just about Ben. It's bothers me that there are those in our mist that believe guilty until proven innocent...that these people sit on juries. It bothers me that people prejudge situations and draw conclusions of guilt on very little information. And it bothers me that there may be darker explanations for doing so.

You are better then this Shawn...

It's a shame to see you bringing up everything that was wrong with the Trib board to slant a disagreement. Hijacking threads to air old Trib laundry is disrespectful to the PS board.

I find it funny that you are trying to deflect attention away from your motives. But, deflect away. "Hijacking", "disrespect to ps", "old Trib laundry" wow you are really pulling out all the stops huh. We both know I am commenting on your current posts. I am questioning your motives for doing so based on things you have stated about your beliefs. Beliefs are current matters which involve current posts. If you have changed your mind about those things then I apologize. It's good to see a man grow.
