i'm really rooting for Limas to overcome his demons and make the team this year. his odds don't look good, but if he plays up to his vast abilities he has a chance. in the words of the late Jimmy Valvano,

"Don't give up, don't ever give up.... "Never give up!"

Sweed is working out with teammates

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 22, 2010

The Steelers' offseason acquisitions indicate the team isn't counting on Limas Sweed to have a huge role in 2010. His mysterious illness/disappearance late last season has yet to be explained.

We do know Sweed remains on the roster, and is working out with his teammates in Pittsburgh. "He's still in the mix," Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert said of Sweed Sunday.

Pittsburgh has one of the better top-three receiver groups in the league in Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Mike Wallace. They signed Arnaz Battle and Antwaan Randle El this offseason.

Sweed may be "in the mix," but we don't think he has great odds of opening the 2010 season with the Steelers.

I'm behind Sweed until he is no longer a Steeler. I want him to beat out Battle. I'd love for him to kinda go the same route as Hines.... lost in the shuffle then BAM! stud reciever in the NFL with a chip on his shoulder his entire career.

:Agree

I think it will be almost impossible for Sweed to beat out Battle or ARE this year. Battle got a signing bonus of approximately $1 million, and ARE also got a meaningful bonus. Not that either one can't be cut later, but I'd be shocked if the Rooney threw away that kind of money for nothing.

I think Sweed's best bet is to play lights out and either force the team to carry 6 WRs or generate some trade interest.

I'm hoping for the 6 WR option and I have no idea why. I can't explain why I haven't given up him yet.

Because you know if he goes somewhere else he will become a "star". The problem is if he stays I think he will remain the "scapegoat".

I haven't given up yet, because I really want to be able to give him the "SWEEEEEEEEEEEED!" treatment at Heinz after a big catch just like we do with "HEEEEEEEEEEEEETH!"

I want Sweed to succeed, I really do... I don't see it happening in the Burgh though.

The fact that he's working out with the team and not sulking somewhere in Texas is a good sign. I know one thing, he's the most physically gifted receiver on the team. If he can get his head in the game and catch footballs he'll be very good. Corner backs will have a difficult time matching up with him.

I still don't see why we signed ARE. We have our top three. Battle is a special teamer and #5. ARE is not a good PR any more, he was not effective as a starter, and he is getting older and slower. Let Sweed battle it out with a rookie for the #4 spot. Save the 9 million doll hairs.

Yeah, I'm hoping sweed can redeem himself, this last season and be what he was meant to be. right his wrong, be a "MAN OF STEEL" and find a way to excercise his head demons. I think everyone, pulls for the guy that works hard to rise out of the depths of desparity. He's a good kid from all reports. c'mon sweed, get in there with VIGOR.

Hey maybe we'll let batch walk. and only carry 2 qb's using ARE as our emergency #3. that would allow us to carry 6 wr's. I know, it's a long shot, but hey, a guy can dream right?

If he gets his head on straight, we'll have to keep him.

He's huge. Gets open. He's got good speed. And he's willing to make contact.

He just has to catch the ball.

drafting a CB who can return kicks can also open up a spot by releasing logan

have him on PR (didn't burnett return kick in college?) and team him up with wallace on KR

I am with the consensus of this thread:

I am pulling for him. I really am.

I hope that he had some sort of conversion magic and he turns it on, but I have always worried that he won't suceed here, but will need a change of scenery.

I liked the line " Sweed to suceed".

Burnett was All Conference USA as a punt returner for I think all of his 4 years at UCF. He was actually very good. Now that he has a year under his belt I would expect him to get another look.

A record setting cornerback and returner for the Knights who was named a first-team All-American as a senior in 2008, helped UCF to its first two bowl berths (2005 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, 2007 AutoZone Liberty Bowl) and the school's first ever conference championship in 2007...Earned a total of eight career All-Conference USA honors, including a four-year sweep of the first-team punt returner award...Named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year as a senior...Graduated in 19th place for most career punt return yards in NCAA history with 1,304...That sum is both a UCF and Conference USA record...Set the UCF record, and ranked second in C-USA history with 16 career interceptions...Also set UCF career records for most punt returns (96) and the most interception return yards (262) while tying the mark for most punt return touchdowns (3)...Played in 49 career games with 46 starts...Amassed 221 career tackles (172) including 12 TFLs...Had 16 career interceptions and broke up 35 others...Also returned 96 punts for 1,304 yards (13.6 avg.) with three touchdowns and returned 26 kickoffs for 745 yards (28.7 avg.) and a pair of scored.

It would be smart in my opinion. The other thing that you could do with the extra roster spot is hire a kickoff specialist. Here's the deal, if you're down to your 3rd quarterback you're done regardless, so, use ARE as the emergency QB and put a player on the team that can actually contribute, i.e. a kickoff specialist or carry 6 WRs.

Hines, the Mouth???

By the way, there is no salary cap this year, so no one has a cap hit.

This is a serious question, certainly not one meant to :stirpot, although I am sure it will. . . Can anyone explain why so many people want Arians roasted or even some of those on this board who hate Mike Tomlin for whatever reason, yet so many people continue to stay behind Limas. I totally understand what people see in him as far as possibilities, but hasn't he been given enough of a chance?

Typically, I would be down with this logic. But with a possible suspension looming for Ben (not necessarily likely since the case will probably drag on, but it is still a possibility nonetheless), I would rather have two legit backup QB options (Dixon and Leftwich, once he gets released by the Bucs).

Some people can't be happy unless they are unhappy. Arians and Tomlin are easy targets because the never have beens and never will bes all think they know more and could do their jobs better. Of course those are the same people who just choose to work at WalMart or McDonald's because it is so much more rewarding than being an NFL OC or Head Coach.

It's because Sweed has upside and shows he can get open. BA has no upside and it's all in spite of him that our O has success.

Players are heroes and coaches are bums.

BA's lack of situational play calling ability abhors me.
