Joey Porter picks the Cardinals

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 19, 2010

Well, here's something for Darnell Dockett to smile about.

Free agent linebacker Joey Porter has agreed to a three-year contract with the Cardinals, according Darren Urban of the team's official website.

Porter wrapped up a visit with the Redskins Friday, but was hoping to land closer to the West Coast. More to come on this story shortly.

Porter and Haggans reunited at OLB! Too bad it's not 2005, Cardinal fans. You are only a half decade late. No biggie.

i'm really surprised anyone gave Joey that kinda money but i gotta give Porter props-

he knows how to get the big-money contracts even after hitting his prime...he must have a great agent, but to Joey's credit he has always known how to market himself.

that is a ton of money for an old joey porter. i would of loved it if the steelers brought porter back for cheap money to provide depth but more than 5 mil a year? haha that is a raiders or lions move

This is shocking. I mean we know that the Cardinals never take our washed up ex-talent.

Porter and Nate Burleson are the only 2 guys that come to mind that have worked free agency.

how do the Cardinals expect to beat us in next year's Super Bowl if they keep picking up our old, over-the-hill players? :tt2

Former Steeler Porter signs with Arizona

By The Associated Press Saturday, March 20, 2010

TEMPE, Ariz. — Free-agent linebacker Joey Porter agreed to a three-year contract Friday with the Arizona Cardinals.

ESPN reported the deal is worth $17.5 million.

The move reunites the 32-year-old Porter with Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt, a former Steelers assistant.

"It is exciting on many levels," Whisenhunt told the team Web site. "Two areas that come to mind are his productivity on the field, (because) getting 26 1/2 sacks over the last two years is pretty impressive, especially considering last year with not even playing a full season.

"Also, the mentality he brings, it's something we have made great progress with as a team. Having another veteran player, who has had great success in this league, to contribute to that will only help us in an area defensively where we want to improve."

Porter, an 11-year NFL veteran and four-time Pro Bowler, spent the past three seasons with the Miami Dolphins before being cut. He played the first eight years of his career with the Steelers.

Porter visited the Washington Redskins yesterday before finalizing a deal with Arizona, where he is expected to take over the starting spot left open by free agent Chike Okeafor.

"I know Joey wanted to be here," Whisenhunt said.

Porter had nine sacks for Miami last season despite limited playing time. He vocalized his displeasure several times during the year, but Whisenhunt felt comfortable adding Porter to the locker room.

"Other than the occasional comments to the media, which we all know Joey has a tendency to make, that bulletin-board material we are all so familiar with, I have never heard of Joey spoken of anything but a great teammate," Whisenhunt said. "That's what I have seen in my experiences with him. Fitting in with some of our veteran leaders, who have already done a good job with us, is no issue with me. I know the work ethic and the mentality he brings will fit in well with our team."

Porter joins a team that lost standout linebacker Karlos Dansby and safety Antrel Rolle in free agency. Also, quarterback Kurt Warner retired and Anquan Boldin was traded, leaving a leadership void Whisenhunt thinks Porter can help fill.

"That's a big part of the reason we have had success, we have had guys who are willing to show the way," Whisenhunt said. "Kurt Warner is a guy who comes to mind. I know our fans haven't seen it, but with the progress Matt (Leinart) has made, that's part of that. Steve Breaston and Early Doucet have been beneficiaries of the same thing. It's been an important component."

With 92 career sacks, Porter trails only Jason Taylor (127 1/2) in sacks among active players. Porter has 12 career interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, 23 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries with two returned for TDs.

what does Whisenhunt mean by this, does he want all his LBers to be trash-talkers? or does he want Porter to take the young LBers to Las Vegas and show them how to pick fights at casinos?

If you live in the greater Phoenix area and own a miniature horse, I suggest you move now.

Joey Porter's dogs get loose, kill miniature horse

Thursday, September 21, 2006
By Mike Bucsko, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Charges could be filed by the end of the week over an incident Tuesday in which two dogs belonging to Steelers linebacker Joey Porter -- a pit bull and a mastiff -- got loose from Mr. Porter's Pine home and killed a miniature horse at a nearby farm.

The dogs, named Tina and Nemo, were still in the corral with the dead horse when police arrived about 4:45 p.m., said Chief Bob Amann, of the Northern Regional Police Department. The department includes Pine, Marshall, Richland and Bradford Woods.

The owners of the horse, Richard and Eleanor Bowers, were not home at the time and their home was occupied by a daughter, Chief Amann said. The Bowers yesterday declined to comment on the attack.

The 6-year-old American miniature horse was 29 1/2 inches tall, probably smaller than the two dogs. Mastiffs can weigh more than 200 pounds and stand nearly 6 feet on their hind legs.

Cardinals wanted Wimbley before Porter signing

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 20, 2010

The Cardinals may have slow-played the Joey Porter signing because they had other options in mind.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports the Cardinals were one of the teams interested in acquiring outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley from the Browns. They were hesitant to do so because Wimbley had only one year left on his contract.

Wimbley wound up going to the Raiders for a third-round pick. It appears the Cardinals didn't want a trade without a long-term deal in place, which they were unable to complete.

The acquisition of Porter, meanwhile, remains questionable.

The key will be his first year compensation. Sure, he can earn a "maximum" of $24.5 million over three years. But we didn't hear anything about guaranteed money, so it's quite possible Porter will be fighting an uphill battle just to see the second year of the contract.

I suspect this is not a unique situation for most of the FAs signings this year. If the talent in this year's draft is anywhere close to the measure some are giving it, most of these aging FAs will never complete their contracts.
I don't see how ownership can justify complaining about salary levels in labor negotiations then turn around and throw this kind of money around. Maybe they already know there is no chance they will pay the full value of these deals?

at least porter was a pro bowler at one point. i think nate burleson could be the worst fa signing in nfl history!! i cant recall a more average player getting that big of a contract. it makes nate washington's contract seem resonable
