View Full Version : It's the Defense

At least a few of us have commented that the offense could have helped the defense this year. Looking back a few seasons at several stats, there is definitely a case to be made that the defense has far underperformed this season:

Yr W-L TA/GA (rank) Offense Defense Diff. (rank)

2009 8-7 -4 (21st) 22.5/g 20.0/g +2.5 (14th)
2008 12-4 +4 (11th) 21.7 13.9 +7.8 (5th)
2007 10-6 +3 (12th) 24.6 16.8 +7.8 (6th)
2006 8-8 -8 (27th) 22.1 19.7 +2.4 (11th)
2005 11-5 +7 (9th) 24.3 16.1 +9.2 (5th)
2004 15-1 +11 (5th) 23.2 15.7 +7.6 (5th)
2003 6-10 -3 (21st) 18.8 20.4 -1.7 (19th)
2002 10-5-1 0 (15th) 24.4 21.6 +2.8 (9th)
2001 13-3 +7 (9th) 22.0 13.2 +8.8 (2nd)
2000 9-7 +14 (6th) 20.1 15.9 +4.1 (11th)

It seems that a team needs to finish no lower than 10th in the league in point differential in order to make the post-season. In 2003 we had the perfect storm of a weak offense and poor defense. In 2006 we gave the ball away too much. Although there are not a lot of data points, I don't see a significant difference between an Arians offensive output and pre-Arians. With an average defense, 21/gm offense probably does not get you to the post-season. Year 2000 was interesting because we had a very strong defense and the point differential was fairly decent but we still finished 9-7. Looking back at the individual scores explained this. We had several games that the defense pitched shut-outs or near shut-outs. On the otherhand, we squeak by in a few others.

So a case can be made that it's not the Arians-effect that has determined our fate this season.

After Ben fumbled in the MIA game and the D suddenly came to life, tells me these guys have been taking plays (and possibly even games) off. It's very frustrating. You would have thought after 3 or four unnecessary losses that they would stop playing so arrogantly and assuming victory. If they played the 1st half of the loss to the Browns the way they played the 2nd half, we probably had that game and be resting easy with a 5 seed right now.

Either that or teams are playing it soft until the 4th qtr just making sure they keep the score within 20

NFL is frowning on teams resting easy with playoff seeds...

I won't talk about the D because it's considered trolling... LOL!!!

Overall, this season was loss with the defenses in ability to make stops at the end of games. Not creating turnovers surely hurt too.

It's true that the D sucked this year at times, and needs lots of work.

It's also true that Brucey A sucks and needs to go.

During the horrific 5 game losing streak, including head scratching losses to the Chiefs, Raiders and Browns - it was the Defense (although the entire team took the night off against the Browns). The first loss to the Bengals was the D (4th and 10 to win the game and a back up fullback converts). It was the D against the crappy bears. It was the D that contually allowed 3rd and long conversions, gave up leads, allowed 21 points in the 4th quarter repeatedly. And with the 3rd string QB in the game and a 17 point lead it was the D letting Thigpen tear them apart for 14 points in 3 minutes. What a joke. Henne stays in and the fins win today.

Troy and Smith going down were brutal but there are a lot of guys making big money who played like crap all year. The defense as a whole should be embarrassed, as shouls the defensive coaches with this season's showing.

Pointing out the D's deficiencies will not get BA fired. Talking about the D will not solve our teams problems.

And neither will not talking about it. We aren't trying to solve the team's problems or trying to get BA fired. We do WANT to solve the team's problems and we do WANT BA fired. We're just venting.

I'm venting to you know... I get tired of being told what is and isn't acceptable ventalation...
