Remember when a team that was already a top seed in the playoffs started their backups including their backup QB and 4th string RB and beat a team that needed a win to make the playoffs?

2004 Steelers over the Bills
I was there and remember it well

Well, our backup was the starter the year before, you know.

At this point what we need to root for is for Philip Rivers to have a fluke season-ending injury in practice so that suddenly the 3-seed becomes REALLY attractive. Then we also need the SoV tie-break to swing in CIN's favor. NE, playing at 1:00, will play to win and for the 3-seed. Then when the SoV turns up in CIN's favor (after all of the 1:00 and 4:00 games) CIN will suddenly play for the 3-seed.

Not wanting to go to the west coast for the second round of the playoffs is probably a bigger consideration than letting the Steelers in.

But I've got a feeling Bellichick and Lewis both want to have momentum going into the playoffs and will try to win. Losing going into the playoffs is not the best way to prepare for the playoffs. Losing can creep into the back of your head. And both of these teams will want to be sharp.

Plus you don't want to give a potential playoff opponent any confidence. You want to put on tape how much you want to win. Send a message to the Colts you play hard and never lay down.
