PITTSBURGH — Even though the Steelers kept their playoff hope alive Sunday, they’re still in serious trouble.

There are five teams at 8-7 fighting for the AFC’s two wild-card spots. And of those five, the Steelers have the lowest standing when it comes to the NFL’s complex tie-breaking system.

“It would be very disappointing if we don’t get in,” linebacker James Farrior said Sunday after the Steelers edged the Baltimore Ravens, 23-20. “Getting in the playoffs is everyone’s goal right now. We’re just trying to make the season right and get into the dance and do some damage.”

With one game left to play, the New York Jets, Ravens, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans and Steelers have 8-7 records.

According to the NFL, the Jets and Ravens will clinch wild-card berths if they win next week.

The Jets host the Cincinnati Bengals (10-5). The Ravens play the Raiders (5-10) in Oakland.

For the Steelers to make the playoffs, they need to beat the Dolphins (7-8) in Miami and then get plenty of help.

They need two of three following to happen:

* Texans to lose at home to the New England Patriots (10-5).

* Jets to lose to the Bengals.

* Ravens to lose to the Raiders.

Because they’ve beaten the Broncos this year, the Steelers don’t think Denver’s home game against the Kansas City Chiefs (3-12) will affect their slim playoff hopes.

“It's been do or die for us for a while, fighting to the last minute,” Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger said. “We're like the cardiac kids.”

Unfortunately, the Steelers’ playoff hopes could be dead next week even if they win in Miami.
