Steelers safety Troy Polamalu could return to the lineup against the Baltimore Ravens if the results from Tuesday's MRI on his knee are positive, coach Mike Tomlin said.

Tomlin, who has been optimistic about Polamalu's possible return at various times this season, is taking a wait-and-see approach.

Polamalu has missed the past five games and has appeared in only five contests this season.

"The result of his MRI is going to dictate what direction we take, like it has in recent weeks," Tomlin said.

» Some starters who suffered injuries against Green Bay could miss practice time early in the week. Tomlin said wide receivers Hines Ward (hamstring) and Mike Wallace (knee), running back Rashard Mendenhall (hip) and defensive end Brett Keisel (stinger) could all be limited early. Ward and other veterans are normally held out of the week's first practice as Tomlin attempts to give them additional time to recover from the previous game.

» Tomlin explained his strategy for attempting a surprise onside kick against Green Bay despite leading 30-28 late in the fourth quarter.

"That thought process of mine was geared toward them maybe kicking a field goal and being up one and us having to kick a field goal to win," Tomlin said. "Not necessarily with those guys scoring a touchdow

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a smoke screen to make Baltimore believe they may be facing Troy.

Yeah I agree. It seems like Tomlin has tried to do this kind of stuff more lately. But that could just be me...

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a smoke screen to make Baltimore believe they may be facing Troy.

I think that strategy would completly backfire. Can you imagine the immediate morale boost
that the Ravens would have the instant they saw dread-locks instead of flowing-locks.

They would be on a Tyrone Carter high.

Why would the Ravens care if Polamalu played against them?

Steelers safety Polamalu unlikely to play against Ravens

Troy Polamalu, who has missed the last five games with a strained posterior collateral ligament (PCL) in his left knee, looks like a long shot at best to play Sunday against the visiting Ravens.

Polamalu recently had an MRI taken on the knee that he has injured twice this season and said the results were "encouraging." He didn't sound optimistic about returning to the field for the must-win game for the Steelers.

Polamalu is not practicing today and he said he doesn't anticipate practicing this week. When asked if he needs to practice on the knee before playing a game, the five-time Pro Bowler said, "I would think so."

Polamalu said last week that he hoped to return for the Steelers' regular-season finale on Jan. 3 in Miami.

He leads the Steelers with three interceptions despite playing in only five games.
