View Full Version : Is it just me - Coaches

Seems like this season, more than any I'm having a difficult time remembering who the head coach is of certain teams....so I thought I would do a ten year comparison just to *hopefully prove to myself that I haven't killed off too many brain cells with a lot of "lucky" 4th quarter drinking......you true Steeler fans know what I'm talking about!

Two ideas sprank forth as I looked up the data.

1st - That perhaps coaches like Lovie Smith, Mike Smith, Ken Whisenhunt and of course our very own Mike Tomlin have made it more fashionable for organizations to give younger / inexperienced Head Coaches a shot - in contrast to hiring guys who already have experience.

When the next batch of hiring begins it will be interesting to see if the trend continues or if some of the more experienced coaches (Mike Nolan, Jon Gruden) return to Head Coaching.

2nd - I've read from many posters (and heard on Sports Radio) stating that they think teams are more uneven than they have been in the past. The good teams are very solid - and the bad teams are just horrible. I wonder how much of that is due to having too many new coaches - and maybe not enough guys with the experience of getting a team ready to play on Sundays.

Looking at the ten year comparision you'll see that almost half (15) of this season's NFL teams have coaches that only had two years or less experience going into the season.

Ten Years ago it was less than 1/3rd. (10) Teams.
