Three defensive starters — strong safety Troy Polamalu, inside linebacker Lawrence Timmons and defensive end Travis Kirschke — didn’t practice Monday.

Polamalu, however, will definitely play Monday against the Denver Broncos.

“(The bye) was very beneficial … it feels much better,” said Polamalu, who played in the Oct. 25 win over the Vikings after missing the previous four games with a sprained knee.

Timmons is recovering from an ankle sprained suffered against Minnesota and could be back at practice Wednesday or Thursday.

Kirschke is recovering from a calf injury suffered in the Minnesota game. He started the last two games after Aaron Smith was placed on the season-ending IR with a shoulder injury.

“Both of those guys are questionable at this point,” coach Mike Tomlin said of Timmons and Kirschke. “There is a little more optimism in regard to Lawrence than Travis at this point but we’ll let it play out as we always do.”

If Kirschke can’t play, his spot in the lineup will be taken by Nick Eason.

Meanwhile, running back Willie Parker reported to team quarters Monday with flu-like symptoms and was immediately excused.

“He had an illness today and was actually running a fever, so we sent him to the (doctor),” Tomlin said. “We didn’t want him to deliver anything to anybody else. I anticipate him being fine.”

The Steelers, who are off today, return to practice Wednesday.

Polamalu didn't miss the 4 games prior to the Viking game. He played against Cleveland the week before the Viking game.
