Aaron Smith's right shoulder ached for weeks before tests showed that the Steelers' defensive end needed season-ending surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff.

Coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday said Smith's shoulder was injured at some point in the game against the Lions in Detroit. But Smith complained about pain in his shoulder long before that, even though it rarely drove him off the playing field until Sunday in Detroit.

"His shoulder's been bugging him for a couple of weeks now,'' said Travis Kirschke, the most likely defensive end to start in place of Smith on the left side Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

"So he's been playing with pain for a few weeks. It got to the point in this last game that it was enough. Obviously, he didn't know how bad it was until he got his x-rays and it came back that it was pretty bad."

Smith will have surgery on his shoulder Friday.

His shoulder has been hurting him for weeks??? Wonder if they would have looked at early enough and he could have had a simple surgery that would have only kept him out for a few weeks?

No. Even a scope to repair a rotator cuff is no easy thing to rehab. Rotator cuff rehab is incredibly painful. Believe me...I've been there. Hurts a lot and takes a long time. It'll be a month before he can even try to raise his arm over his head.
