A. Smith has a shoulder injury, maybe a significant one. From Tomlin's presser.

a smith is one of the most important parts of our defense, ziggy will be good but he needs to blossom in these spot roles, if smith is out for any significant amount of time than we are in trouble on the dl....

It looks like Aaron will be out against the Stains. Eason, Kirschke and Hood will rotate, it looks like.

i know, we think our defense is bad now, just think how much worse it will be without him, much like how it looked without him in the last 5 weeks of 07........oddly enough, we finished 2007 ranked as the #1 defense, somehow, defenses were weak that year...

I believe Kirschke is the top backup on Keisel's side, while Ziggy is the top backup on Aaron's side. Regardless, as JAR already mentioned, I expect a regular rotation with both of them (plus Eason will dress if Aaron cannot go, so he'll be in the mix there as well).

As much as I'd like to see what Ziggy can do, this is not good news.

To put a positive spin on this...we will probably activate Eason and maybe resign Sonny Harris to our active roster?

I wouldn't be surprised, Tomlin didn't sound too hopeful when he said significant.

Maybe we'll see Sonny Harris.

Hood has been poor against the run so far. He'll need to improve quickly.

Aaron Smith out with shoulder injury
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Just as the Steelers welcome the possible return of safety Troy Polamalu this week, it appears they have lost the services of defensive end Aaron Smith.

Smith's right shoulder was injured in Detroit Sunday and coach Mike Tomlin said today it "potentially could be significant."

Tomlin said the injury potentially could keep Smith out for awhile, pending the result of tests today.

The Steelers regard Smith as the best 3-4 end in football.

Tomlin said Ziggy Hood, their first-round draft choice, is not yet ready to replace Smith as the starter and they would do so "by committee."

Steelers' Polamalu, Parker back, but Smith likely out against Browns
By Scott Brown, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
Last updated: 12:43 pm

Strong safety Troy Polamalu and running back Willie Parker could return to action Sunday but the Steelers are expected to be without defensive end Aaron Smith when they host the Browns.

And Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Smith may be out for an extended period of time because of a shoulder injury he sustained in last Sunday's 28-20 win over the Lions.

"Potentially could be significant," Tomlin said of Smith's injury.

If Smith is unable to play Sunday the Steelers will use a rotation of Travis Kirschke, Ziggy Hood and Nick Eason, Tomlin said.

Polamalu and Parker are slated to practice tomorrow and Tomlin sounded optimistic that the Steelers will have both players for the game against the Browns.

"It will be really interesting to see how they respond Thursday," Tomlin said of Polamalu and Parker.

Polamalu hasn't played since the Steelers' season opener on Sept. 10 because of a sprained knee. Parker has missed the last two games because of turf toe.

My songwhale alert came through. It said that "Tomlin says Aaron Smith has a right shoulder injury 'that might be significant'. Smith is being evaluated as of Tuesday at noon".

This could be huge.
