Skippy gets a goat, but if we go short and get a 1st down we hold the ball and run the clock down and get Skippy a closer attempt. And recall we gave us a sack that lengthened his earlier FG attempt. But Skippy still gets a goat.

That's a tough catch when you can't see the ball at all, and the DB had his hand in the perfect place.

Holmes did have a lot of drops today though. Just a weird day in weird conditions. How many sacks could Farrior have had if he hadn't whiffed? Reed misses two? Holmes drops a few? etc.

How can you possibly say Ben lost the game because of that pass. It was a beautiful pass and Holmes dropped it. You must be kidding me with that comment.

Maybe no one else was open? And even with the incomplete pass, Reed is getting paid to make those kicks. PERIOD. The missed FG before that one was even worse.

Agreed Chachi...pass was on the money, can't fault Ben for that. But D isn't far off either, a more conservative call there probably moves the chains.

Santonio was bad, but this is on Skippy - missing one is bad, two is unacceptable.

Missing those FG's by Reed were big. How many games do you think people give Reed credit for winning? Not going to get to down on him after one game.

Kind of tough to hang a loss on one person. I am sure the defense felt like they should had made a stand on that last drive. The offensive players left some opportunities to score TD's out on the field.

They showed one angle...from behind. TV is two dimensional...that ball could have been 5 feet from Holmes and it would have looked to us as if it was right there.

3:30 left, short field, 3rd and 2...go for the first down.

Even if Skippy hits that FG there is still a lot of time left for a team that drove 93 yards on us for the tying score.

We lost for a few reasons:

Missed tackles
Dropped Balls
A few questionable play calls
Some ill timed bad pass blocking
A few stupid penalties
And Cutler's douchedom must've been a downer to all on the field...

Game lost on not having a running game, that's all.

In the past, bad, wet, slippery weather was great for us. While the opposing QB slished and slushed and squelched the ball around, we used the Bus to plow steady yards.

Now, Ben's squishing and squelching with the rest of them because we don't have a running game.

Ben probably made the right decision. After the ball is snapped, he and the defense decide where the ball goes.

I agree...horrible decision to go for it all when a first down would have probably salted the game away. If Ben called it, shame on him despite the perfect throw. If Arians called it...well, one more reason to hate on the guy.

That said, Holmes and Reed let us down. Period. We can point to myriad plays in a close game that were blown by the defense or the offense, but those two guys had perhaps their worst games as a member of this team.

Like someone else stated, they have both been huge for us in the past and will be again, so it's hard to curse their names.

I disagree. The drive previous you have the Bears march down the field and tie the ball game with a TD. You get the ball back, put together a good drive your own, not 12 yards from the red zone and you still have nearly 4 min. left in the game and you decide to go for broke on 3rd and 2. Even with the TD, you give your opponent over 3 min. to AGAIN march down the field. There offense scored 10 points in the 4th and you want to give them the ball back? Sorry.... I disagree. Get the first down and chew more clock off... IMO... BAD CALL.

If a team has the opportunity to get a FG or TD, what do you think the team will choose? I say they will take the opportunity for a TD. Especially with our defense. The opportunity was there for the Steelers. Came up short.

Sorry, I do have faith in our defense 8 times out of 10. I think the coaches, players, and most Steelers fans agree that they have faith in our defense. Our defense is one reason why Ben took a shot at a TD. Faith in Reed being another. Ultimately, the play called does not decide where the ball goes. Ben decides and the defense can influence that decision.

In past years, people complained about turtle ball. Now they take a shot at a TD, fans complain about that. Just goes to show that short of a win, they can't win.

While the positives you attribute to Reed are true, he gets paid a ton of money to simply kick a football through the uprights and at this stage in his career he should be able to do just that on makeable field goals every time he's called upon. No excuses. Now we've got one in the loss column that shouldn't be there. We'll see how much it hurts us down the road.

That was a total team loss today. Defense bent late, offense was sloppy and normally STs hides in these team collapses, but Reed, being a team captain, must have felt a need to take some of the brunt as well.
Yes, it was rainy and that was the reason for the sloppy play to some degree, but they played in it too.
Granted they looked like hell too. Its tough to kick on someone else's wet field.

Hopefully Reed can get past it. He's not had a meltdown game before. Kickers get them. If it happens in the playoffs, they typically are ruined. Hopefully this will drift away from him. I doubt he sleeps well.

No complaints from this end. I was mystified by the call. As for going for a field goal over a TD... I wanted the TD. I just don't understand why you have try and get it with that much clock left. I agree that ultimately Ben makes the decision on which route would yield the desired result... but I just think that play could of kept in the bag for at least another set of downs, after we get the first.

You can't rely on Reed to hit 40+ yard field goals every game to get the W. We've got
to get 7's instead of 3's.

That was a collective loss today. Maybe we should have went for the 1st down on third
and two. Maybe Holmes could have caught it. Maybe our defense could have made a
play on that last drive (and if the ball would have bounced the right way, we would have).

Ugly game, ugly loss. Let's not see anymore.

Ben didn't have a agreat game by any means, but there is a lot of blame to spread around. Overall, Ben was not one of the bigger reasons we lost. Not sure how you can't lay some of the blame on Reed when he goes 0 of 2 from inside the 40. But not a whole lot, because it never should have been that close anyway.

I'd put more blame on Reed, Holmes (not only for the TD drop, but he droped at least 2-3 others as well), and our secondary and passrush (Carter, we are missing Troy, and only 1 sack and 50% 3rd dwn effiecency is not Steelers defense).

I know we dissagree on whether you make that pass in that situation, but that was one debatable play. There were a lot of other plays that overall congtributed to the loss much more than that one.

stlrz d
09-20-2009, 08:34 PM
I understand the cumulative effect of a game...but my point was at that time it's 14-14 with 3 1/2 minutes left. We have 3rd and 2 with an opportunity to go for a 1st down, which, if we get it, allows us to burn more clock.

If we get a TD on that play we still leave them a lot of time to go down the field (they just went 93 on us) to score the tying TD.

If we go for the first down and get it we can burn clock. If we don't get it we still have the FG try.

If anybody can find an post videos of that play, including a couple of different angles if at all possible, it might help us out a bit. I saw Santonio's jersey get grabbed and pulled after he ran by the DB, and some have indicated there may have been faceguarding by the DB. Honestly, it still looked catchable to me. Holmes had an off day.
I also think going for a first down and keeping possession to run the clock down and get a score would be a winning strategy. I didn't like the deep pass choice, but if it would happened to work ...

No video needed...he lost sight of the ball and didn't regain his track until it was passing right between his hands. I'm not sure about the face-guarding, that very well could have been the case. Without a doubt Holmes had his jerset pulled, but it looked to have absolutely no impact on his route or concentration (of course, I can only assume the latter).

Just don't tell me it was a tough catch, because guys who get paid that kind of money, guys who want to be considered among the best...they make that catch. Like Reed, Santonio has done it for us in the past and he'll do it for us again.

It wasn't necessarily the pass itself, but the decision to go there with so much time left in the game. The correct decision here is pick up your two yards and keep getting closer. We had the Bears on their heels. If we could've taken two more minutes off the clock and forced the Bears to use their TO's, even if we just come away with a FG, we're in a MUCH better situation. Holmes dropped two nice passes for first downs earlier in the game, and then we go for the long TD pass to him with that much time left, it's just not smart football. A short pass to Hines or Heath would have been the way to go.

Wallace was being ready to get stuck, which is what is expected on that play. His keys are to get his hands on it and hold on after the hit. Hard for him to tell that his man fell down. That play was designed to get them in 3rd and short. The D was protecting the 1st down marker. Yes, maybe Ward or Holmes gets the first, but Wallace hasn't seen much field and is going through the progressions of the play design. He'll improvise later. Surely can't blame his lack of getting 2 yards on the loss. A small increment of the game especially considering it was by design to get into 3rd and short anyway. He did his job, albeit to the minimum on that play.

My question, then, is the following:

Why design a play to put themselves in the situation in which they are last (or close to it) in the league at converting? The Steelers haven't been good on 3rd and short or 4th and short since last year and I'm not sure about the year prior. Calling a play to put yourself in the worst possible scenario for your team doesn't seem to make sense.

A FG with 4 seconds left is better than a TD with 4 minutes left. Just sayin'.

Several players, calls, and the weather all contributed. I'm looking forward to the next game.

Reed had a pretty bad 6 game stretch in his second season here. He went 0-1, 0-1, 2-3, 2-2, 2-4, and 0-2 in 6 games in a row in November and December of 2003, and we lost 3 of those 6 games (the worst being a 6-0 loss to the Jets when Reed was 0-2). He managed to bounce back from that to be a reliable kicker for us. I think he will be able to do it again (however, I am hoping his struggles are limited to one game this time and don't go on for a month-and-a-half like that).

I wasn't dogging on reed at the beginning, just pointing out that that was the cause of the loss. You could see it on his face when the jets got the ball back and went down and won the game. he looked like he was gonna cry. I love skippy, he's actually one of my favorite players. But i'm not gonna shy away from saying what happened. I'll bet you he is as near as perfect as can be for the rest of the season.
on a more important note.
what the bears did yesterday is what you have to do to beat us. neutralize the pass rush by quick passes that are underneath the zone. remember (think it was 02 or 04) when we played the raiders and gannon threw underneath the entire game and killed us? We need to be more balanced on D. show teams that we can take that away, and surprise the hell out of them when we blitz. just my .02

every kicker has a bad game once in a while. you cant make every field goal. reed has always been nothing more than reliable and consistent. i doubt he will have many more games like yesterday. besides you shouldnt have to rely on a kicker to win games for you

all we needed was a first down and we are in FG range, but reed would of sh*$ the bed again, so ehh, the ball was perfect to holmes, just like the other 3 that he dropped....

No way to know that for sure.

Without Troy in the game, yes.
