Dezmond Sherrod released from the Practice Squad and Kevin Brock, rookie TE from Rutgers is picked up.

Looks like he had a great Pro Day, but it didn't translate to making a roster spot with the Jets or Panthers. He is a good blocking TE apparently, so move over Spaeth? :stirpot

I can't believe they wasted a PS space on Sherrod to begin with

Really, I thought he would not have been signed to the PS. I also was very surprised when Summers made the team. I'm not sure what they see in him. I watched him for two practices at training camp and was very unimpressed. Even before I saw Redman in the preaseason games, he was outhustling Summers, so there has to be something that we don't see....

The Steelers worked out that other TE not too long ago, so it is clear that they wanted an upgrade from Sherrod on the PS. It is also interesting that they've been looking at TEs that are primarily blockers.

Check out this video. It's hilarious (if you like watching Summers miss block after block). We definitely need to improve our short yardage blocking.

I really don't understand why two of the players (in BOLD below) are in the PS:

80 Brock, Kevin TE 6-5 255 4/9/86 R Rutgers
19 Grisham, Tyler WR_ 5-11 180 6/11/87 R Clemson
37 Harris, Tuff S 6-0 198 1/23/83 3 Montana
69 McLendon, Steve DT 6-4 280 1/3/86 R Troy
33 Redman, Isaac RB 6-0 230 11/10/84 R Bowie State
61 Shipley, A.Q. C 6-0 298 5/22/86 R Penn State
28 Vincent, Justin RB 5-10 219 1/25/83 1 Louisiana State
95 Woods, Donovan ROLB

I think Gerald Cadogan, OT, PSU is still out there. I think that would be a more valuable position to develop than another WR or RB.

This is great stuff. Well, terrible, but a great breakdown. I can see why they'd want to add a blocking TE to replace Sherrod, but why not a FB to replace Vincent on the PS?

The FB to replace Vincent on the PS should be Frank Summers with Redman moving up to the 53 man roster. I'd also sign Cadogan to the PS if he is still available.

Can Redman block? Didn't see that in the pre season. Summers is on the active roster as a FB. I don't think Redman has a clue how to play that position nor do I think he did anything on special teams during the pre season.

I don't want Redman as a fullback. I want him on the active roster as the short yardage RB, used in the I-formation behind FB D.J. Johnson. Johnson is a better blocker than Summers, so our 3rd TE should be the primary blocking fullback (just like last year when McHugh was the de facto FB for short yardage runs even though Carey Davis was officially the FB).

Johnson could be this year's McHugh
Redman could be this year's Russell
Summers could be this year's Davis

(and just like I didn't see much use for Carey Davis on the active roster with McHugh as the better blocking FB last year, I don't see much use for Summers on the active roster with Johnson as the better blocking FB this year. Put Tank on the practice squad and let him learn how to block there. Redman's short yardage RB role is more useful on the active roster right now than a RB who is trying to learn how to be a FB on the job...and whiffing on blocks more ofthen than not so far).

A team that would want him on their 53 man roster could just claim him off of our practice squad at any time anyway.

I actually think that once on the PS the player has to agree to be signed by a team. They kinda have free agent status. The player has no choice if claimed during the waiver process.

I'm pretty sure I'm right but if anyone knows for sure please set me straight if wrong.

After that game, who's gonna pick up Summers for the active roster.

Biggest blunder was keeping Summers active and PSing Redman. They needed to throw Redman in the fire on game 1, while he was hot. See if he can stick. Yes, 4 RBs is too much. But by next year, we may only keep 2 of Parker, Mendi and Moore. The 3rd back would be Redman and possibly should be now. They probably want one more year to analyze Mendenhall to see if he's a real player. If he is, then he can replace Parker with Moore and Redman doing the 3rd down and short yardage stuff.
Either way, I don't get Summers. Where's Kreider now?

That sounds about right, but who would turn down an active roster spot on another team for a practice squad spot on our team? These guys are professional football players...they are going to want to play, regardless of where it is. Being on a team's 53 man roster means that you have a chance at suiting up that week. I doubt that there is one guy that would choose to stay on a practice squad here and give up that opportunity (particularly since P.S. guys are up-and-comers who are trying to live out their dream to be an NFL player).

I do think that if another team wants to claim someone off of our practice squad, we may have the opportunity to add him to our active roster first before he goes. Of course, that means having to cut someone else from our 53 man roster to do so...
