Bernie Kosar Files For Bankruptcy
Posted by Aaron Wilson on June 19, 2009, 7:14 p.m.

Bernie Kosar, the former Cleveland Brownsí star quarterback, declared bankruptcy today.

It was the Chapter 11 variety.

According to Patrick Danner of the Miami Herald, Kosar filed a petition that revealed he owes creditors a total of $19.5 million, including almost $1.5 million to the Browns and $3 million to his ex-wife, Babette.

During a radio interview today with Tony Rizzo of WKNR in Cleveland, per Steve King of the Orange & Brown Report, the 45-year-old former NFL star discussed his financial problems.

ďIíve tried to be generous with family, friends and ex-teammates,Ē Kosar said. ďIíve tried to help people out and let people manage things for me. Iím glad I was able to help those people and to help charities.

ďBut Iíve got four great kids and now I have to focus on them. The money comes and goes. But God has blessed me with the ability to make it.Ē

Per the Herald, Kosarís restaurant ó Bernie Kosarís Steakhouse ó went out of business last year. And Kosar has been divorced for two years.

According to the report, Kosar indicated estimated assets ranging from $1 million to $10 million. However, his estimated debt ranged from $10 million to $50 million.

Kosar also reportedly owes $725,000 to Cleveland Gladiators owner Jim Ferraro. Kosar is the Arena Football League teamís president.

Kosar also has a lot of debt, $9.7 million, incurred through real estate investments gone bad.

Kosar, who played at the University of Miami, lives in South Florida.

Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy for business, not personal. Sounds like he crapped out with his steakhouse.

As an aside, I've heard him on the radio at 0800 and he sounds hammered--slurred speech; rambling conversation--so bad that I've turned it off. He obviously needs help in more than one area.

I watch the pre season games when the Steelers are not on and you're right, his speech
is slurred and he sounds drunk. I still can't figure out if he's drunk or just very nervous,
but the guy knows his stuff. He's very good at anylizing things and I actually think he'd
do a great job in the booth for the real games.

Browns still suck though.

Look at the comments under the article...many, many, MANY references to him as a boozer.

Local peeps generally know more than non-locals what a guy's all about.

I always hated Bernie....just because we went to the same high school and graduated three years apart.....Me being the big Steeler fan that I am, was so sick of hearing Bernie this and Bernie that from all of the Clowns fans around here in the 80' s. When Elway drove the Donkeys 98 yards that day to keep the Browns from going to the Super Bowl, no one was happier than me because there are plenty of moron Clowns fans and alot of them in Youngstown/ Boardman. I was glad I didn't have to hear their big mouths taking about the Super Bowl!
