Dog that bit Steelers Harrison's son getting new home
Friday, May 29, 2009
By Lillian Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Patron has a home.

The pit bull that belongs to Steelers linebacker James Harrison was scheduled to be put down after he bit Mr. Harrison's son, James Harrison III, along with the boy's mother and a friend. But in the last few days Mr. Harrison has sought to find a home for his dog. His agent, Bill Parise, said Mr. Harrison insisted the dog not be placed in a home with children or with an owner who intended to use him for fighting.

The new owner, who has not yet picked up the dog from Triangle Pet Control in McKees Rocks where he has been since the attack on May 20, is a woman who specializes in rehabilitating pit bulls, said Mr. Parise. He declined to identify her or say whether she lives locally or elsewhere. The woman may keep the dog herself after she has worked with him, or she might adopt him out, Mr. Parise said.

Mr. Parise said he consulted with Best Friends, the sanctuary in Utah that took in former Atlanta Falcolns quarterback Michael Vick's dogs, and that they spoke highly of the woman and her abilities to work with pit bulls.

:Clap Very glad to know it,....the dog didn't deserve to die. As if years of loyalty and or devotion were to mean nothing. Makes me think of something an unknown author wrote of the breed,...

"You made me what I am today, courage at its best.
You wanted me to know no fear, a cut above the rest.

Not only did I master that, I've thrown in loyalty, too.
Look past my eyes into my soul, you know I'd die for you.

I'll watch your kids, I'll watch your house.
Your praise will be my crown,
ask what you will-I'll do my best.
I'll even be your clown.

But some of you don't like me, and I don't know why.
The only thing I'm guilty of is courage, love, and try.

But still they want to see me go, they want my breed to end.
Will I see you sitting idly by? You, whom I call a God and friend?

You made me what I am today, you never saw me waiver.
I've done my best to keep you safe. Won't you please return the favor."

Good for James, he's giving away a pet that just dominated on his kid. To a home with no children, there's a concept. Blah blah blah, PR move.

Actually the dog was scheduled to be put down. People in Pittsburgh and across the country pretty much begged him to do this. If they hadn't the dog would have been put to sleep.

I believe the correct term is euthanized. :stirpot

I don't like that term for something like this. Euthanasia is something done to an animal that is sick or injured beyond medical help. It sounds too "nice" for these circumstances, know what I mean?

Put down or put to sleep = killed.

Euthanized = put out of misery.

This dog wasn't sick, injured or in any type of misery.
