The fact that Duke has fallen to the third round speaks volumes. I think the Steelers got two third round picks in the trade.

Im wondering why Jaron Gilbert didn't get taken at 64. They have to think he won't be there at 79. Maybe they aren't as high on him as I thought. Hope we get someon from this group.

Jaron Gilbert
Duke Robinson
Derrick Williams
DJ Moore ----Why is he still on the board???

Herman Johnson is still available.

According to NFL.com:

Steelers receive:
2009 third-round pick (No. 79)
2009 third-round pick (No. 84 -- originally from Chicago)

Broncos receive:
2009 second-round pick (No. 64): TE Richard Quinn
2009 fourth-round pick (No. 132)

According to the Draft Trade Value Chart, the two third round picks are worth 195 and 170 (365 total) while our second and fourth are worth 270 and 40 (310 total), so we made out on the deal.

It could be good to have 3 third rounders (79, 84, and 96) with guys like DE Jarron Gilbert, OT Jamon Meredith, OG Duke Robinson, CB D.J. Moore, S Rashad Johnson, etc. still on the board.

Man, I've got a couple of beers in me, but I could have sworn that I heard Rich Eisen say that we got Denver's number one pick next year in exchange for our 64th. I was friggin' ecstatic and now you guys tell me it's a couple of thirds. Not bad, but not the value I thought we had on the entire ride home. At least we should get a few solid players tomorrow and there's gonna be a lot of action for us early.

Anyone know a site that will show the remaining players still available? I'm thinking Shipley must be on our radar with maybe the 96 pick? Dorell Scott could be one of the other picks, but we also need to hopefully pick up a guard/tackle.

I'll take 3 3rd round picks any day.

I'll take it, too

Guys to look at:

Duke Robinson- if he makes it to #79, I'll be shocked
Troy Kropog
Antoine Caldwell
Kraig Urbik
Dorell Scott
Chris Baker
David Bruton

Any of these guys will work with the 3rd rounders we have.

Trading out of the 2nd this year made a whole lot of sense considering that the bulk of the value in this draft lies in Rounds 3 thru 5.

7 second day picks...if Colbert is a wise man (a dicey proposition, sometimes), we could have a great second day.

8 day two picks

3rd - 3
4th - 0
5th - 2
6th - 1
7th - 2

If there is a guy they really wanted at the top of round 3 right off the bat tomorrow morning, how about this trade?

Detroit trades:
3.65 (265 points)
6.174 (21.8 points)
Total: 286.8 points

Pittsburgh trades:
3.84 (170 points)
3.96 (116 points)
Total: 286 points

They could get Jarron Gilbert, Jamon Meredith, or Duke Robinson with the first pick tomorrow, and we would still have pick 3.79, which is the 15th pick tomorrow.

Well, I'm not that excited about these two third-round picks from Denver. Hopefully, Colbert pulls out a couple of gems to change my mind. A bunch of second-day picks (8 of them, if I counted right) means a bunch of training camp fodder...maybe half of them will be able to stick with the team. I would have rather seen us package about three picks in order to move up in the second and get someone who could contribute before long. I can only assume that our FO really is pretty much satisfied with our current stable of OL players.

That would make sense since essentially we would be giving up one spot from 64 to 65 and moving up from 96 to 79. Hmmm....I really doubt we'd take Gilbert since we have Hood. Maybe Meredith and then Caldwell or Shipley?

I wish we coulda somehow moved up to get Brace in the 2nd. The cheaters swapped 2nds and threw in a 4th and a 6th to Oakland. Al Davis is so lost in the war room we probably coulda swapped out 2nds and they would threw in a 3rd....WTF. But seriously Brace and Hood woulda been one helluva day one.

Answered my own question:

It lists all the players still available by position.

Yea, the Steelers record with 2nd day draft picks isn't that good. Eh, a lot of ado about nothing waiting for the draft this year. Hopefully, the third round tomorrow will net three keepers for the future.

A lot of these players have similar grades which is why you can move down. Gay wasn't even a third round pick and he ended up being a starter.

I expect the Steelers to get corner and an OL who can play next year.

The Lions would want our top pick in the 3rd to do that deal.

That said, I wouldn't do it. Just let someone fall. We should be able to get three solid players.

Caldwell, Shipley, Urbik, Gilbert, M. Johnson, plenty of corners like Donald Washington ?Victor harris and safeties like Rashard Johnson/ David Bruton.

OK, here's my guess for tomorrow:

3.79 Kraig Urbik, G/OT
3.84 Roy Miller, NT
3.96 A.Q. Shipley, C
5.32 Alex Boone, OT
5.33 Deon Butler, WR

7.17 Donald Washington, CB
7.32 Lydon Murtha, OT

We'll be trading some of those picks.... It's too many.

I can almost guarantee that Gilbert won't be chosen.. Why? Because of the roster. Say you have both Hood and Gilbert. That would mean 2 DL already on the team would have to be cut. No way will they cut Kirschke and Eason for 2 unproven rookies. 1 yes. but not 2.

Either Kirschke or Eason will be gone to make room for Hood on the roster.

Another DLman could be taken later on and could be added after camp to the practice squad, but no way would Gilbert make it on the PS. Someone would sign him off of it....

You are probably right, however, I could see Butler making it as the 4th WR, Boone pushing Capizzi or Essex, Potter pushing Kirschke, and if Washington and Murtha impress they could be a PS player who takes a year or two to improve and then make the team.

Sorry, I am a Penn State homer...but seriously, after I saw Shipley's wonderlic score (40), which indicates he is borderline brilliant and considered that with his football skills, I think I might take him over Luigs.

As centers, I prefer both Luigs and Antoine Caldwell to Shipley. And there are other o-lineman that I would take before Shipley as well, include tackle Jamon Meredith and guards Duke Robinson, Herman Johnson, Kraig Urbik, T.J. Lang, and Tyronne Green. I would not have considered Shipley until the 4th round, and we don't have that pick anymore.

jrobitaille23

It would appear that we are pretty set if we want to address our oline in round 3. Meredith and Lang would be two of em if I had anything to say about it. I would also take Iglesias who I feel is a Hines clone and provide depth and competition for Sweed. After that I am sure there will be a decent enough project DB, Oline, and LB for special teams and development long term. If the draft shapes up that way we will be good.

Mel Blount's G

Okay then, with those round 3 I'd like:
Duke Robinson - OG
OR
Herman Johnson - OG
OR
Jamon Meredith - OT

AND

Jonathon Luigis - C
OR
Antoine Caldwell - C
(Or, wait 'till round 5 and hope Shipley falls waaaaayyyyy down there.....)

AND

a NT, CB or safety

There won't be a DL including a DT in the 3rd round again because of the way the roster is set for 2009 and we drafted Hood. Hood will take either Eason's or Kirschke's spot. Unless he doesn't impress in camp where they'll have no choice but to keep all of them-

Maybe in the 5th, 6th or 7th though.- Someone who could make it on to the PS and/ or just compete in camp.

The 3rd rounders chosen are going to have to make the team because of where they are being picked. Even then, one of these could wind up on the PS or even cut because of the depth on the roster. We're gonna need a Safety to replace A. Smith and maybe even Ty. We're gonna need a C/G or even a T, and we're gonna need a WR/ KR too. I would think CB may be an option as well, but they just signed a FA a few days ago.

I'm going to say a S, WR, C/G/T in round 3.... That's my prediction....We'll see soon how right or wrong I am.

I don't think we're limited at all with picking more D-Linemen. The projections some are making because of the roster just aren't looking close enough - there's room to be had for new players if you think the ones they're bringing in to develop are better than the ones who are already here. Besides, I think with Keisel & Casey being in their last year, plus Roye being done, there's room for more to develop & for Tomlin to bring in more of his kind of guy.
