Bucs to Leftwich: just looking

The Bucs wouldn't mind building a team in the image of the Super Bowl champions, which is why they took a closer look Thursday at Steelers backup quarterback Byron Leftwich.

But the 29-year-old Leftwich left Tampa Bay without a contract as the team continues to weigh it's options. Now we're hearing its unlikely the Bucs will sign Leftwich but they are committed to adding a fourth quarterback and wanted to evaluate him.

The Bucs are going to work out Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman next week. The thought here is that Tampa Bay will likely wait until after the draft to add a QB to the mix of Luke McCown, Brian Griese and Josh Johnson.

The Steelers have indicated they would like to have Leftwich back and he visited the Redskins last week. Everybody knows that Bucs coach Raheem Morris is greatly influenced by Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, so it's not surprising Leftwich made a visit to Tampa Bay.

Leftwich played pretty well in relief of Ben Roethlisberger. But he has a slow release, his lack of mobility at times is a problem and you have to wonder if he would really push McCown for the starting job.

The truth is that the Bucs really aren't that impressed with the current class of free agent quarterbacks, which include Leftwich and former Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, who recently bought a home on Lake Keystone.

After the draft, some other veteran QBs may shake out of the trees as teams add rookie quarterbacks and the Bucs may want to wait and see if there are any trade possibilities as well.

It's a fluid situation, like anything else in the NFL, and we'll try to keep you update. But Leftwich signing with the Bucs doesn't appear as likely right now.

Hopefully he gets tired of visits but no offers and signs with us soon. I like him a lot as our primary backup QB.
