A look at the franchise/transition tag values

Remember last year when people were up in arms when the Steelers placed the transition tag on offensive tackle Max Starks, guaranteeing him nearly $7 million?

Here are the tag values for this year. It's interesting to note that the transition tag on offensive tackles would now cost $7.74 million and that the Steelers have just two players - safety Troy Polamalu and defensive tackle Casey Hampton - among the top five-paid players at their position in 2009.

That is how you stay out of cap hell.

I have to think that extending both James Harrison and Heath Miller will get them close to top 5 dollars at their respective positions. I could see Harrison getting $7M+ and Miller getting $4M+.

The real challenge will come when you try extend Lamar Woodley after next year. If you wait until after next year he may have another monster double digit sack season on his resume and he could easily demand a contract that gets close to top 5 also. That's why he should be done a year early right now.

IMO that is why we will need to dump Casey after next year and probably renegotiate both Aaron Smith, Jame Farrior and Brett Kiesel into cap friendly contracts to retire as Steelers. You can only have so much of your cap tied up on the defensive side of the ball. It is also why we need to draft DL this year so we have some low end salaries at that position.

I'll wager Cassel won't be in a Pats uni next season.

Btw, am I the only one who thinks LJ Smith is flat out ROBBING the Eagles???

The only reason he is up there among the top 5 TE's is because they stupidly gave him the franchise tag last year. Suffice it to day, he won't be getting such a tag this season.
