View Full Version : Will the Economy Affect Free Agency

Will the big deals be there or not?

All the talk about the decline in ticket prices, the NFL layoffs, the overall economy, etc., will it impact how much owners can afford to pay players?

Or are the players fine until the next TV contract?

I think it affects the market some, but there will still be owners out there that throw way too much money at certain free agents! The second tier free agents could be the ones who notice the difference!

I think teams who's owners make all their money from football will feel more of a pinch.

No, it will not affect FA. The salary cap is the cap and the teams that spend at the cap limit or near it will continue.......which is almost all the teams.

That said..........expect Steeler tickets to increase this year. 8)

A cap is a maximum, not a minimum. Teams don't have to spend up to the cap, as I'm sure you are aware.

Yes, I am. It is my opinion that the following is true:
"the teams that spend at the cap limit or near it will continue.......which is almost all the teams.

Beginning in 2006 each team had to pay a guaranteed Minimum Team Salary of 84% of the Salary Cap. Each year that percentage goes up by 1.2%, which means that it is 86.4% this season. However, the Minimum Team Salary cannot extend beyond 90% of the Salary Cap. Any shortfall in the Minimum Team Salary at the end of a league year has to be paid, on or before April 15 of the next league year, by the team(s) having such shortfall, directly to the players who were on that team's roster at any time during the season.

If you are going to copy information directly from another website the least you could do is credit the writer for it. 8)

People who make their money from football might actually be in better shape this year. There's a lot of people losing a lot of money outside of football.

But it's all about the signing bonuses and upfront money.

Will owners have it?

Sorry. I also forgot this quote:

I'm sure SD has too much pride and honor to crawl back here after his remarks and dramatic announcement that he was leaving. However, I could be wrong....... 8)
Are you serious? Crawl back??
I was wrong. You don't have any pride or honor. You had your little temper tantrum, made your drama queen announcement that you were leaving, and now want to act as though you didn't really mean it. Try to pretend you are a man.

Like I said in a previous post, I don't plan on posting here much, but I have to call you out on blatant plaglarism. A high school student like you should know that not crediting your sources is not only wrong, but illegal. 8)

I didn't promise you anything. I didn't lose a bet, I made a statement that I wasn't going to post here. Well I changed my mind, because I saw you taking pot shots at me then plaglarizing to boot.

Now you're mad because I called you on the fact that you are a 15 year old plaglarizing porn junkie who has never played a down of football. (I could see why you hoped I would never post here again.)

Settle down. No one was banned as a result of the recent hissyfit between the two of you. You both are free to come and go as you please. You can pop on and just read if you want. You can pop on and post if you want. You are both Steeler fans and are both welcome here. Now, I hope that the next post on this thread is about whether or not the economy might affect free agency. Thanks.

That had nothing to do with the economy and free agency. I don't want to start locking threads again, but I will have to if this pettiness continues between the two of you.

The NFL will not be affected by the economy. It is something that people will find money for, whether it be Sunday Ticket, or a real ticket, the NFL won't change, IMO. 8)

I think luxury box sales will decline a lot. I don't know how that translates into salaries, bonuses etc.

Thats an interesting point. Although some companies may drop their luxury boxes, others will be there to take their place. I think the worst that could happen would be a devaluation of the boxes based on less demand. I doubt it affects the player salaries too much though. The NFL is one of the last luxuries people will be willing to do without. Think about it...would you rather go out to dinner twice a week or have the NFL?

The economy will definitely affect FA's this year. In the past we always saw major movement in the first few days of FA. Don't look for as many first week moves and there should be several players to choose from at more affordable rates after week 1 than in years past. Judging from baseball free agency, several players did not get multi-year deals and many very good players are either still available (Man Ram) or signed in the past week (Dunn,Abreu) for much less than expected.

The economy might impact what the advertisers are willing to pay the networks, which may impact the offers the networks give to the NFL for the rights to the games. This is a down-the-road thing since the networks already have long term contract to honor.

It seems too insulated to impact the NFL to me.
