Steelers sign 10 players to offseason roster
Thursday, February 12, 2009
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Steelers today announced the signing of 10 players to their offseason roster.

Seven of them were on their practice squad last season:

WR Dallas Baker, C/G Doug Legursky, CB Roy Lewis, S Ryan Mundy, TE Dezmond Sherrod, RB Justin Vincent and LB Donovan Woods.

Three new players signed are RB Stefan Logan, WR Brandon Williams and FB Ryan Powdrell.

Logan (5-7, 185) rushed for 889 yards on 122 carries (7.3 avg.) and caught 52 passes for 477 yards (9.2 avg.) and three TDs in 2008 with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. He signed with the B.C. Lions as a free agent in May of 2008 after spending time in 2007 on the Miami Dolphins practice squad as an undrafted rookie out of South Dakota. The 27-year-old Logan spent five years out of football before enrolling at South Dakota in 2003.

Williams (5-11, 170) played in 23 NFL games with the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams from 2006-07. He was released by the Rams prior to the 2008 regular season and did not play with another team. Williams was selected in the third round (84th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft by the 49ers after a college career at Wisconsin. He signed with the Rams as a free agent in October of 2007. Williams has returned 35 punts for 245 yards (7.0 avg.) and 38 kickoffs for 888 yards (23.4 avg.) during his NFL career.

Powdrell (5-11, 254) originally signed as an undrafted rookie with the Green Bay Packers in 2007 but was released prior to the regular season. The 25-year old Powdrell, who played in college at Southern California, spent a week on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad in 2008.

I think it's safe to say that Logan and Brandon Williams are already an upgrade over our current kickoff specialists.

And with Airens calling the plays, will be used the same way. 8)

Passing the ball to him in crucial, game winning, everything on the line situations?

Sure. Right after WP runs between the tackles 22 times without a lead FB blocking for him. 8)

He's a kick returner.

Powdrell was the kid that suffered that devastating ankle injury in the Nebraska game while he played at USC. It was a dislocation/break. The video is on youtube. He played LB and looked to have a promising future after the switch to FB. I remember seeing him play some because they were on TV all the time nationally then. Could take over Davis's spot if he is healthy. I really don't see Davis's spot being so safe if a guy comes in and shows he could be a "Bruiser" back who could block and play ST. Powdrell looked like a better receiver out of the backfield in college. This might be the Steelers version of the Raven's McClain!

I think that Lewis and Mundy are very strong possibilities for next year's final 53. I also would count out Woods at LB.

Didn't Legursky just sign a 2 year contract. Doesn't that essentially guarantee him a spot on the final 53?

I think that Legursky's 2 year deal does guarantee him a spot on the roster. I like the fact that Legursky was the fastest center coming out the year he did. If you could get him to play guard, he would be incredible pulling out and leading the charge on some runs. Get him and a fullback leading the way.

Why would a 2 year deal guarantee him a roster spot? He'll have to earn it in training camp just like everyone else. In my mind right now, he's barely a 50-50 proposition to make the final roster as an interior o-lineman, since Simmons should be back, plus you have Hartwig and Stapleton already there, they might re-sign Essex or Kemo, might move Colon inside, might sign a veteran free agent from another team, and they could draft an interior lineman somewhat high in the draft, who would likely take precedence over Legursky, who was an UDFA a year ago and was cut surprisingly early in camp last year before being brought back later only because injuries struck our o-line.

You are correct. I mis-read.

Following a week's preparation in Tampa, Doug Legursky the practice squad member looked on while his Pittsburgh Steelers dramatically rallied past Arizona for the Super Bowl XLIII trophy. Three days later, the former Marshall University football standout was rewarded with a two-year contract, cementing active roster status.
