Ward may need surgery

Hines Ward said he may need surgery after playing in Super Bowl XLIII with a sprained right knee.

"We'll have to see and re-evaluate it," Ward said, "because I don't know if I hurt it (more)."

Ward caught two passes for 43 yards in the Steelers 27-23 win and afterwards the pain in his knee was the last thing on his mind. He teared up as he talked about winning a second Super Bowl in four years for the Rooney family.

Ward, who owns most of the Steelers' major receiving records, also reflected on what winning another Super Bowl meant to him.

"I'm always compared to (Lynn) Swann and (John) Stallworth," he said. "(Sunday) I kind of felt like I belonged in that class, having two Super Bowl rings."

If he needs surgery, would he be ready by training camp? Does this make signing Nate all the more important?

No, but it does mean that Holmes need to step up next year and carry the load for the receiving corp and Sweed needs to accelerate his maturation to start contributing. I see a late draft WR selection.
