I didn't join the trib board until a few games into the season in '07. So I'm asking folks who were long time members or readers of the trib board...what was that place like at this point in '05?

That was a special season and a special time. I think a lot of us were psyched (duh :D ) but nervous. We had been so close to the "one for the thumb" so many times only to fail. Different than this time in that most of us are confident and expect to win this one pretty comfortably. I think back then we were hoping for the best, but subconciously preparing for the worst. Probably just like the two Cardinal fans feel right now

i was on the steelers.com message board for awhile...started there in 2002 (original username was PLAXfan haha you can laugh now)...got kicked off after the 2006 season because i got in a fight with some guy who wanted us to hire grimm/whiz and i was a tomlin supporter...things got heated and i said some bad things and got the boot...but i was sticking up for my boy tomlin :Beer

i can tell you what that place was like during our last playoff run/super bowl XL...everyone was confident and knew we would beat seattle...it just seemed destined in 05...kinda like 08, we had our backs against the wall all season long, toughest schedule, we're battle tested...

Oh, it was a sight to see. Lots of Cowher bashing, doubting he could actually "win the big one", but a lot of folks thought that we had a special team that could get the job done. I was in the second category. Just crossing my fingers and praying that we would FINALLY get Lombardi #5. A crazy time to say the least!

I was on Stillers.com back then. It was the usual name calling and stuff. In the midst of all that the debate over Cowher's ability to win it was second to the confidence felt by the posters in Ben and his abilities.

I really enjoyed the weeks after the SB because of the breakdown of the "Bad Calls" and such.

This year should be better.

My daughter was born 6 days before Super Bowl XL and I couldn't think of anything but my wife and my new baby girl.... which was complete therapy, because I probably would of been going out of my mind. Unlike this week of chaotic thoughts, I was at peace in 2005 during the week leading up to the big game.

I think our opponent is more formidable this time around. But I just can't see this team losing. Eagles, Giants... maybe. But not this team. Not because from our end, but from theirs. They're going to be playing basically an away game in that stadium. Our fans will outnumber them 9-1 and I think all their magic will run out. This whole "us against the world" stuff ebbed during their bye-week. They'll not ride that roller coaster to a championship... not against this defense and certainly not against the preparatory skills of Mike Tomlin.

well, i have to confess a few things here. First off, I very much enjoy poetry when it is written well. and while SeaOracle's poetry wasn't worthy of being printed on single-ply toilet paper, i sort of enjoyed the way he was able to piss everyone off in one swoop. I mean, who goes into a football forum and posts bad poetry. Kinda comical.

Of all the trolls I have seen in various fora throughout the internet he was one of the most bizarre and one of the more enjoyable.

I'll probably get crucified for this, but I enjoyed SeaOracle. Maybe to others, but he never once came across like a pompous azzz to me. Was his view of football skewed and was he a very odd character... yes, but aren't we all? Poetry on a message board about football, maybe not the best mix. But he was at the very least entertaining, and no one can deny that the guy was very intelligent. Its funny how this MB hasn't had a resident troll from another team visit frequently.... other than JOM (BTW, he's good people). I remember the Trib was infested with Trolls w/ other team affiliations.

If you had a choice between SeaOracle's poetry & 95% of the trolls from other teams, Chadman would take SeaOracle every time.

He was harmless, if a little odd.

But there were some decent injections by him. He was not the worst- not by a long way.

Funny- he always made Chadman feel that Fraser Crane actually exsisted & was finally trying his hand at football support...

I was a big poster on a yahoo board back then. Believe it or not, it was a fairly good board at one time. Most of the arguments and fights were with trolls from other teams. Most Steeler fans, even in argument, were fairly respectful of each other.

The Trib board back then (I read a lot before posting), and always from my memory, was nothing more than a springboard for argument after argument.

Although there were many quality posters there that I respected, it truly tainted my opinion of SteelerNation.........I always hated that board.

The main thing I remember about the Trib board during that time was Flippy's SUPER BOWL OR BUST thread. A thing of beauty in a turbulent atmosphere back then. I believe that thread actually willed us to the XL trophy, as it's going to do this year! There were alot of lemmings back then ready to jump over board. There was the typical bashing of all the key players and coaches. There was HHH pissing people off and calling them racial names, there was one fellow (name escapes me) who wouldn't shut up about a certain running back he wanted to draft.... You know, the usual stuff. But, when it all went down in Detroit, we were one Nation again!

The raiders trolls and their really sick porno pics.

The best troll? the kid from cleveland who painted his face. I still laugh at that series of posts. I wish we could find him and bring him here. He was comical to the nth degree. He was such an easy target and the posters there tore him up like a wounded lamb in a pack of jackals.

It was a very strange time on the Trib board as that was just before the infamous split.

A lot of strong personalities who spent more time spouting off than actually enjoying the ride. Many arguments that seemed to be "well you took that side and I argue about everything so I'll take the other side for no good reason".

A lot of negative posters who suddenly turned into hall of fame fans a week later. A lot of nonsense that had nothing to do with anything.

Like I said.....weird time.

I started lurking there at the Trib during the '05 season, especially in the build up to the playoffs. Some of the stuff was comical. I occasionally posted there during the playoffs and when we won I stepped it up a little bit and got a little more active. But I can recall the same non sense that forced alot of people over here going on with bickering and constant fighting. But nevertheless, it was very active and alot of optimism and anxiousness to win the one for the thumb. I think since it had been so long since a win (and even a trip to the big one) that people were very anxious. It feels different this time. I feel super confident and just have the feeling that we belong here and are meant to win.

I will echo what t.o. says and add to it.

The trib board way back then was "pre first split". It was dominated by a couple of very strong personalities - Crash arguing w/ S43. Crash arguing with PirogiPete, etc. There were a core of posters that pretty much dominated most conversations. Most others weren't even noticed. It was hard to make a valid football point in the middle of a 40 page spit-fest.

That being said, A LOT of posters (or a vocal minority) were anti-Cowher and predicting gloom/doom again.

Flippy had started the first super bowl or bust thread.

After we won, there was a period of nirvana and peace for a couple of months until the great poker split fiasco.

Then the board really changed as a lot of those "core" posters left and others arose/were noticed.

I moved from Philly to Kentucky in 2005 so I went from Fox and Hound sundays with hundreds of fans to the woods and a computer...

I think I read for a while then signed on in 2006... just stumbled on it one day since I kept the Tribune and Post gazette as tabs to keep up with the local news.

I joined cause I think I read and HHH thread that was really offensive and couldn't get over the fact Steeler fans were so racially insensitive and just bigoted. I come in with a chip on my shoulder and was really going hard at some of the posters and I think SMG (pompous smart azzz) :D got me to calm down a bit and showed me how easy I bit the bait....

Trib board was entertaining for a while then it got to a point most of the fans were fans of themselves and wanted to be right more then they wanted the Steelers to win.

I really want to find RickT though.. just to see what his thoughts are on us going 8- :D.

I personally didn't like SeaOracle prior to the XL game because of the match-up...

... But I have since met the guy on ocassions out in Seattle (tossed-back a few brews) and have talked to him on the phone several times. He is a good man, and is quite insightful on many issues from the world, country, and sports... He is actually rooting for the Steelers. ... He is actually one of the brightest individuals I've ever met.

Keep in mind that he is nothing more than a persona behind a computer keyboard just as many of you all are... Many of you all get that, but unfortunately a few don't, and that is sad...

I was still on the official Steelers board at that time. I do remember though someone making a post during the end of the season, right after we had lost a game or two, that said We gotsto win somore games. Or something completely screwed up like that. It was someone named Damperdan or something like that. We didnt lose a game after that post and it was the longest thread on Steelers.com by the time the SB was over. Pure craziness.
