Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fire Jon Gruden, Bruce Allen

Posted Jan 16th 2009 5:57 PM by Michael David Smith (

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen.

The news, first reported by Adam Schefter of NFL Network, represents a stunning fall from grace for Gruden, who was the toast of the league after winning the Super Bowl following the 2002 season. But in the six seasons since then, the Bucs actually have a sub-.500 record under Gruden.

Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer released the following statement:

"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise. However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."

The 2008 season was emblematic of the problems Tampa Bay has had with Gruden at the helm. The Bucs were 9-3 at the start of December and looked like one of the best teams in the league, but they collapsed down the stretch, finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs, and Gruden and Allen have now paid for it with their jobs.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Friday said that they have fired head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen.

"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer said in a statement. "However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."

Gruden had been the head coach of the Buccaneers for seven season, coming from the Oakland Raiders. Tampa Bay defeated Oakland in the Super Bowl his first season. His overall record with Tampa Bay is 57-55, but the Bucs have been 22-26 over the past three seasons. They started this season 9-3 but lost four straight and missed the playoffs.

Sorry man...guess this should be there as well...it just doesn't have the traffic as this one. It would be nice if we could combine the 2 into 1 as you suggested.

Wow, I didn't see this one coming at all. With the era of hiring asst. coaches lately, wonder if he'll end up anywhere as a head coach or not??

Chuckie still has his movies, so won't need another coaching job unless the money is right.

He'll be a HC somewhere soon, IMO.

No way man. He'd advocate bringing in 5 washed up backup QBs then try to bench Ben in Week 5 to start someone like Bruce Gradkowski or Jake Plummer. Screw this head case. Pick a QB Chukkie!
