Gailey is the last OC we had that I had any faith in whatseover. I gave Arians the benefit of the doubt but I have to agree that he may not be the right fit. Why we never put a FB/TE in front of FWP in the first half yesterday continues to befuddle me.
But don't kid yourself. If a new OC comes in it would not be prudent to blow up the system. Elements of what Arians implemented are sound and enabled Ben to have the best season of any Steelers QB ever.
Trying to totally implement a new offense would IMO be a disaster. I do not want to take the ball out of Ben's hands but I want to see elements of a power run game brought back, particularly a FB (one who can catch). Above all I want the TEs to remain a big part of the passing attack. Who was the OC when Bennie Cunningham was having his great years?

Anyone that doesn't have our offense trying to run out of a 3 TE set would be an improvement. That has to be the dumbest formation to run out of in the history of dumb formations. It is an embarassment that we are last in the league or close to the bottom on 3rd and short situations, especially around the goal line regarding the run.
As for how it would effect Ben.....don't take this the wrong way but....WHO CARES. I never liked the fact that Arians and Ben get together so that Ben can approve the plays that the OC has drawn up. WTF? The OC should be saying "This is what I have drawn up, this is how you are to run it, this is what we will use on Sunday, and if you don't like it, I will find someone that will." Ben is not a coach, nor an offensive guru. (Neither is Arians for that matter.) All this..."we will see how Ben feels about this play is horse sh#t. Someone needs to lay down the law on this offense. This is not Burger King. They can't have it their way. We had an offensive identity that worked. To vear from that was just retarded.

I would love that, my only reservation on Tomlin is that he may not release lame duck coaches. The chin used to be stubborn with crappy players and this guy may be the same with his coaches. I hope and pray that he cuts some of his lame coaches at the end of the season. He's going to be in a big dilemma when the season ends and we actually win it all. That will be a tough one. Time will tell.

BB will probably want to keep BA around so that he can continue in his role as player/coach. Sometimes, you have to reign in a player no matter how good they are. But, to the question, hell yeah bring back Gailey.

Gailey and LeBeau back together.
Tomlin would just have to keep players off the field who aren't suppose to be, yell at refs and call timeouts.

Just watched Hoge break down the Atlanta playcalling against the Vikes. Mike Mularkey continues to show the creativity he had while he was with the Steelers. Yeah, it does help to have OL that can get to the second level but the calls themselves and the formations went a long way to confusing the Vikes defense.
My guess is that if we go one-and-done in the playoffs BA will get the boot. Somebody's gotta take the fall for a O that was ranked in the top half last season to the bottom half this season.

Time will tell.Cowher hired Earnhardt cause he wanted an experienced OC w/ a ball control offensive philosophy. As good as Earnhardt's offensive was, Cowher fired him after SB XXX in order to promote Chan Gailey.
Hopefully, Tomlin will know when to cut his losses, in order to get a better OC.

He was the OC in 1996-1997. I did a quick google search, but didn't find the rankings.
He's done a good job with the Chiefs this year, and he doesn't have a whole lot to work with. He'd certainly have to be better than Arians.

Do Tomlin OR Ben have any kind of history with Chan Gailey? Just because we remember his tenure fondly (and absence can make the heart grow fonder... remember plenty of criticism of Gailey when HE was here, too) doesn't necessarily mean he gets hired based on his connections to the Cowher era Steelers, especially the Pre - Ben Cowher era.

Despite their record, Gailey has been doing very well in KC. My roommate is a chiefs fan so I've seen a lot of them. Gailey rebuilt his whole offense to fit around Thigpen. They use the pistol formation and other unique sets to fit their personnel the best. I do not think KC will fire him, even if they do change coaches.

I would normally agree with you, but depending on who is hired as the new GM will determine whether Edwards stays. If Edwards gets fired, then I really do not see Gailey staying.

This is all idle speculation for two reasons...
a. For some insight into Tomlin's MO in managing a staff, I'd look first to his mentor, Tony Dungy, who got run from Tampa at least in part because of his stubborn refusal to throw Mike Shula, one of the worst OC's in league history, under the bus. Dungy is a loyalty guy - cut his teeth as a coach with Chuck Noll. If Tomlin proves to be similar - and I'm betting he will - he keeps his coaches.
b. Even if Tomlin decides to can BA (and truthfully, I think they spend the off season fixing the line and try again next year), he's going to reach for someone he has familiarity with or has worked with before. I'd look to Tampa or Minnesota for potential replacements before I'd look to old Cowher era retreads... especially since the only OC Ben had while he was here with BC was Whiz.

By rule, a team's 3rd QB is designated inactive. They dress for the game, but only for emergency purposes. If you insert your inactive emergency 3rd QB during the game, you cannot put your 1st or 2nd string QB back into the game. Are you saying that you would make Leftwich your emergency 3rd QB and count on Dixon to be Ben's primary backup (considering Ben's considerable injury risk holding the ball behind that offensive line) just to be able to use the rook for a gimmick play here and there?
By the way, when we used Kordell as a "Slash" back when he was a rookie in our 1995 Super Bowl year, he wasn't the designated emergency 3rd QB. He was actually a 4th QB on our roster (Neil O'Donnell, Mike Tomczak, and Jim Miller were QB's on that team).

I would like to see Gailey back here. Always hated seeing him wearing that stupid Cowboys star. *shudder*
And unlike some of yinz, I always like Mularkey and Whiz as OC too.
Creativity is the key...those three have it.
Not only does Arians not have a key, I think he slipped on the roller skate and bonked himself on the melon. (That key-roller skate reference is for some of the "senior" posters) :P

But what you have to remember is it wasn't just a song (by the way, the song is a metaphor for something not quite as innocent as roller skating :P)...way back in the day roller skates fit over the top of one's shoes and a key was used to adjust the size. But you're a pretty smart guy so you probably knew that. :)

At some point, MT will have to put his stamp on this team. If he does that by retaining BA, then the target is on his back, as far as I'm concerned.
Chan Gailey has a proven and successful track record. BA does not. I don't give a $hit how many "quality" QBs he's coached.
I don't care if the Steelers win the SB this year, BA is an inferior football coach and needs to get launched. And if BB doesn't like it, then, tough $hit. No player is greater than the team.

That song was one of a few hits by the hippie wonder Melanie. At this point I would take her for OC over Brucey A.
I had a skate key D. I kept it on a thick string of white yarn around my neck (yup, a turtleneck shirt) so I wouldn't lose it while skating. The skates had metal wheels and everything. Life was good in '68.

And for the record, in the 70s they went to plastic with no key...the things "clicked" into place. Not nearly as good. I don't want to upset the Asian one by stating where they came from.

make leftwhich 3rd- with the understanding that if Ben goes down he is the guy going in.
also, i'm pretty sure kordell was on the roster as a WR/QB. (hense the nick name) that was how they got him in the game.

I'm throwing my hat into the ring for Tom Clements - here's his resume...
"Clements served as quarterbacks coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers (2001-03), Kansas City Chiefs (2000) and New Orleans Saints (1997-99).
Last year, Clements oversaw a near-MVP season from Brett Favre in what turned out to be the quarterback's final year. Favre surpassed 4,000 yards passing for the fifth time and posted a career-best completion percentage of 66.5 and a QB rating of 95.7 that was his third-best in leading the Packers back to the playoffs.
He also helped continue the development of 2005 first-round draft pick Aaron Rodgers, who now will take over for Favre as the team's starter. Rodgers had the best of his three preseasons in 2007, as well as his best regular-season performance in relief of Favre in a critical NFC showdown in Dallas last November.
The previous year, Clements' work included helping Favre reduce his interceptions from a career-high 29 the year before to just 18, setting the stage for the impressive finish to the future Hall of Famer's career.
Before coming to Green Bay, Clements spent two seasons (2004-05) as offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. In 2004, the Bills' offense increased its points output by 152 and became only the ninth team in NFL history to score more than 30 points in six straight games. In addition, Buffalo reduced its number of sacks allowed from 51 to 38, fewest by a Bills team since 1999.
On an individual level, Clements' offense was highlighted by RB Willis McGahee, who became the fifth running back in Bills history to register back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, covering each year of Clements' tenure. In addition, quarterback Kelly Holcomb set a club record in 2005 with a 67.39 completion percentage, surpassing Jim Kelly's 1991 mark, 64.14 percent.
Prior to joining the Bills, Clements served as Pittsburgh's quarterbacks coach for three seasons (2001-03) under Bill Cowher. In 2002, his second season with the Steelers, he helped Tommy Maddox earn the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award, as Pittsburgh's passing offense ranked seventh in the NFL, its highest finish since 1980 with Terry Bradshaw under center.
Clements also worked with Pittsburgh's Kordell Stewart (2001) and Kansas City's Elvis Grbac (2000) during each quarterback's best season, both culminating in Pro Bowl berths. Mike Ditka gave Clements his first NFL coaching job, hiring him to coach the Saints' quarterbacks (1997-99), which included Jake Delhomme and Kerry Collins."
