I'd like for some of you X's and O's types to break this down further for me, but I really thought that the Offensive line played pretty well for us against Baltimore. The Ravens are noted for having a very good front seven and I thought that for the most part, Bern had time to throw the ball. I'm curious what some of you guys think.

oh i couldn't agree more...our oline picked up the blitz well, mewelde specificially picked up the block well on occassions, and we pass blocked well....
ben definitely did have time to throw and when the ravens decided to blitz on that last drive, you saw what happened...we threw quick hitters to hines, nate, and holmes...
i think the problems of our running game is simple...i honestly think it's the scheme...if we would simplify things, use the fullback, i believe we could run the football more effectively...some people refuse to use the playcalling as an excuse, but i think our zone blocking scheme, bunch sets, and double tight sets is why we cannot run the ball consistantly...

A couple of things I noticed in the last two games:
1. The O-Line has been playing back a bit. The Tackles and Guards play off the line allowing them some more time to prepare for the pass rush. It has been helping pass protection but I think it's been hurting the running game as well.
2. The O-Line overall is pass protecting better. Starks has been doing a good job. The problem though is when other teams blitz. The O-Line, especially the middle of the O-Line has trouble picking up the blitzes. But for some odd reason teams are not blitzing as much anymore against the steelers.

Hey Jom!
Were you happy to see your boys beat the Skins, or would you have preferred that they just lost out so you could keep in position to get the #2 overall pick in April instead of sliding down to the #4 spot behind both Missouri teams? Just curious...

It's one of those bittersweet moments. I always want them to win. But come draft time when I'm working on my mock drafts for the Bengals, I'm sure it will suck to hear analysts say that Andre Smith or Michael Oher will be drafted before we get to pick.
KC just drafted an O-Linemen so hopefully they'll pass this year, but I can see the Rams going for one of them...

Stapleton missed a huge block on a stunt that led to 1 sack I remember. He blocked down to help Hartwig, then came back to his ZONE but by then the pass rusher was already by him. Was kinda funny actually.
Ed Reed came up the middle untouched for a sack too, but that's Ed Reed. He timed it perfectly.
They also didn't line up 4 wide as often as they did against Dallas.

Something else I noticed is that at times they try to use Matt Spaeth to block D-Linemen. I don't think that's the best strategy unless he has some help. Spaeth might be able to block DB's or LB's but putting him one on one against a DE or DT, I don't think is a smart move.
I could be mis-remembering but I thought I saw Spaeth matched up against Trevor Pryce on one play and Pryce got by him. Then later in the game I thought I saw him again trying to block a D-Linemen and Ben was forced to get rid of the ball quickly on that play.
It was the Ravens though and they move their players around a lot so they might have forced the match-up...

We'll trade you our 1st round pick and Willie Parker for your 1st round pick if Oher is still on the board. :P
